I sat on the ferry while on a solo trip to New York City when I was 22. I took this during an extremely polarizing time in my life, one where I was learning what my life wasn’t and shedding my old skin. I was learning to choose life and to choose love for myself before anyone else. Yet, my past slipped through in brief echoes. My understanding of my place more and more fragmented in its trace but yet, deep down, I was never truly lost. On this trip, I made a promise to myself, that I would always choose a deeper life. Always choose to live and always choose to feel, to feel deeply and completely.

My first time in Barcelona was on a solo trip. I flew there from London, and did’t know what to expect. Months before I had briefly met and fallen for a man from Bilbao. We spoke for a month yet that fleeting connection has left me with so much to process. Once in Barcelona, I felt one big cathartic release of emotions. I saw him in every alley way, in every cafe, every museum and every restaurant. I heard his accent and voice everywhere I went. All while facing the reality that we would never truly see each other again. The polarizing reality was painful, but facing it was liberating. Barcelona to me was a deep, ocean of emotional release that flowed through me. And it allowed me to move forward with a deeper understanding of these fleeting and crucial connections we make in this life. What they teach us about others and the world and reveal and teach us about ourselves.
My first time visiting my family’s home country. The place of my roots and where my ancestors lived. I had always imagined in my head what it was like, especially as a child. I’d imagine the mango trees, the colorful homes, the mountains… but being there showed me it’s a whole other world. One much more intricate, complex, intense, vibrant and fascinating than I could have ever imagined. El Salvador, 2023.
