Fire Eel (Mastacembelus erythrotaenia), family Mastacembelidae, order Synbranchiformes, found in freshwater habitats in SE Asia

This species is not a “true eel”, but is in a group called the spiny eels.

Another one of my EPP quilted pieces I finished recently. This was originally going to be joined into a large panel in combination with the other one I did (see here), but I decided they would work better as independent pieces.

This was my first foray into non-hexagonal paper piecing as well as designing my own EPP patterns, and I've certainly learned a lot! Very tricky to get the piecing to work sometimes, but easy enough to design and pull together. I'd love to pattern out a full sized quilt using this style, but I imagine it will be much more difficult to complete. We'll see!

Venomous (both).

Other color variations/geographical races of this species are referred to as Vietnamese Centipede, Red legged or Orange Legged Centipede.

This variation is sometime called the “Mint-leg” variety.

This is the only know species of semi-aquatic centipede.

Described in 2016.
