This sketch also relates to my time travel AU. I felt like Maekar didn't fully understand the nature of his existence in this time. He'd never encountered the concept of time travel. So, I thought he'd probably assume it was a very realistic prophetic dream. That's why he's afraid to sleep now.

It's also worth remembering Maekar's thoughts from my previous post: towards the end of his life, he suffered from memory lapses. But as someone who's constantly lost his memories (for one reason or another), he's equally afraid of losing touch with them. That's why, in this AU, he'll never get drunk to the point of unconsciousness.

Maekar is trying to maintain control of his own mind. Because he's literally in a time period that, with the exception of significant events, has been erased from his subconscious. And the events he remembers perfectly well took place decades in the future. He'd forgotten how to talk to people as the fourth son. He'd forgotten what it was like to have all your children alive. He'd never be able to remember that, and he needed to relearn it.

Imagine how tired and nervous, and at the same time completely detached from life, Maekar looks. You constantly make mistakes in completely ordinary things, you intuitively understand that you are doing something stupid, but you do not understand where you made a mistake.
