“Deuce?” the male cadet blinked and took the bag the female cadet hand it to him. Green eyes examining the bag they returned back at the brunette. “V-Valentine!? Wait uh,..t-this is…um…” suddenly the bag between his hands became heavier despite being light a second ago. Sweats popped on his face, eyes shifting to the sides not knowing how to respond to this. Why would SHE give HIM chocolate on Valentine day? 

“T-thank you, um, Deuce. Happy Valentine’s…Day…to you as well….” This is awkward. His face is slowly reddening. It was not the first time he was handed something on valentine’s day but coming from the flutist felt somehow…odd since they don’t know each other (or so he think under this sudden situation.)

     The next few hours became a blur. The last thing she could remember clearly was hearing him thank her, making her smile before clinging to him again. After that, she had closed her eyes to rest them and then she couldn’t remember anything else. Voices? There were voices. She felt like she’d been moved several times.

As consciousness returned, she was met with the sighting of a familiar ceiling and warmth. Slowly she sat up, coughing slightly in the process before looking around. Oh, she was in her room. Thoughts quickly went to Machina and how distraught he had been. Hands gripped her blanket tightly for a second then released it to run a hand through loose locks.

   “…I should let him know I’m alright.” Fingers fumbled about with her COMM before she managed to send a message to Machina that she was alright if he was worrying himself crazy and… if he wanted, he could come see her if he didn’t want to believe her words alone. It was only after it was sent that she realized how eyebrow-raising that offer had been. A girl inviting a boy to her room, all alone? Her face turned red immediately as it set in. What if he thought she was being forward and trying to make advances toward him? Embarrassing..!

Being a cadet does not necessarily mean ‘high school’ like vibe. You have to constantly be ready for anything, even exams so Machina was in his room revising some materials before going to the Crystarium to check the missing notes he did not write in the last lecture.

Suddenly his COMM beeped which kind of surprised since it is not used only in battles. He quickly checked it and as soon he read the sender name his eyes widened and clutched tighter to the COMM. She was...alright...Thank the Crystal...He blinked to her invitation and at that moment, he did not consider how weird the situation would be if he were to rush to her room now. Because he was both nervous and relieved he forgot to respond to her and dashed outside to go check on her personally. Climbing the stair to reach the lower part, his pace was fast, he could trip over his own feet if he was not careful. Wait...where was her room? You idiot!!! Because how hasty he was, he did not ask her which room was hers. He knows Rem’s because...obvious reasons but not anyone in the class--the females only. Think...think!

     “I don’t want you to blame yourself anymore!” That surprised even herself how much she had raised her voice. The cold air didn’t bother her at all at this point, loosening her hold around Machina’s neck in order to lean back and properly face him. That look on his face made her slide her arms away in order to gently hold his face in her hands then lightly, ever so lightly, bump their heads together. As if she would ever actually headbutt someone. For a second her eyes glanced at her wrists, still marked from the tightness of the ropes earlier, then brought them back up to look him in the eyes.

   “You… you did nothing wrong. My guard was the one that was down. I.. am also a cadet. I should have been able to protect myself. We can argue about this even after returning home, but… I will never blame you. So please… no more. You’ve done everything you could to get me back and now here we are. You came back for me. That’s more than enough reason to forgive yourself.”

His body was shaking not from cold but of rage. Deuce’s loud voice startled him. His green orbs stared at the girl. Was she..telling the truth? She won’t go around and call him out for being weak? It is either you be strong or you will be dead--long forgotten. 

“R-...really...?” his voice was low almost whispering. Head lowered a bit to rest on her shoulder for a couple of seconds before he got up again, holding her close to him whilst she falls. “I’m...so---...thank you.” and he fell silent again. 

Thankfully, the walk did not last and the two cadets managed to regroup with the other groups. Seven and Queen quickly took over Deuce to heal her wounds and Rem stepped in to heal his. His childhood friend questioned him what had happened but he was really tired to answer anything so she dropped it for now. 

    “If you aren’t sure, don’t worry about it. Just know I’m thankful.” Being oblivious wasn’t always a bad thing. “He does tend to nap a lot, doesn’t he? Trey and I found him asleep on the bench once. We were afraid he would catch a cold.” Trey had begun to go on another one of his lectures when Ace had mentioned dreaming, and she had interrupted because she knew there was no way Ace would want to sit around and listen just after waking up. In fact, who would? Unpleasant way to wake from a nice rest. 

   “Perhaps it’s time you and Rem try to spend more time with the rest of us. It would be good for us all to get along with one another. Some of us might be… a little difficult to approach, but I promise they’re all good people.” Even though Sice had harsh words for everyone, she loved Mother just as much as the rest of them. Nine was aggressive, but he was just a lovable big brother. If Mother chose them all, she believed everyone was good.

“ . . . “ He just did what anyone would do. Back when he was a kid, he remembers calming crying Rem, especially on that day. “A-ah, right. Really? Heh, I can imagine seeing him napping on the bench...I saw him a couple of times napping against the Chocobo barn.” Often Chocobos chicks would be nestling close to him or in his lap.Cute.

That idea was not bad perse, but executing it can be...troubling with how some of zero cadets are. “I believe Rem already fit well with the girls--you and the others.” Coming from a competitive class, he always felt like he is watched and now in the famous class zero, that doubled. “I’ll figure a way to get uh, know the others.” he smiled at her. 

     By the time Deuce stirred, the fire had already gone out. Blinks were slow, and for a moment she closed her eyes again to nestle closer against Machina… but then her eyes shot open and she lifted her head to look around. It was important to rest whenever possible, that was a fact, but this was not one of those times where they could afford such a luxury. If anything, this may have just made things all the more difficult for them.

   Tilting her head up at her classmate, she laid a hand upon his arm and was about to shake him when she only now realized his head was resting against hers. Cheeks flushed at this, delaying her attempt to wake him. Seems she hadn’t been the only one who got too comfortable by this arrangement. 

   But alas, there were important things to address right this very moment. After trying to brush this aside, she shook his arm. “Machina… Machina, wake up. We’ve been asleep too long.” Was there enough time to venture out and make their way home now? She felt responsible for this. If she hadn’t fallen asleep first, perhaps neither of them would have overslept.

“Mhm...wha...? OH!” his eyes shot open when Deuce woke him up. Quickly scooting to the other side, his right hand pressed against his head, trying to compose himself. “It’s already this late...S-sorry. It is my bad. I should have not slept.” Machina got up and dusted himself before kicking some dirt at the fire to not cause any fire and alarm the white tiger.

     Being pleaded with this way, it made her heart ache. She had only done it to help him so that he would have one less thing to worry about, but it seemed to have had the opposite effect and made him all the more frantic. While she was certainly not planning to use a spell again like that, she couldn’t feel better knowing how she had scared him even more.

It was a blur what went down as they rested in that cave. She could hear his voice, but all she wanted to do was close her eyes and rest now. The feeling of his mantle wrapped around her brought about a nostalgic feeling and, while his back was turned to her, she did manage to smile faintly to herself. It didn’t last, and soon she found herself being carried again by him. On a normal day, being carried in such a way would have stirred up feelings of embarrassment, but this was no time to experience such feelings. The look on his face only made her hurt more.

   Trembling hands reached up to pull herself up and tightly wrap her arms around his neck, a small sniffle sounding. She wasn’t crying, but she certainly wanted to it this kept up. “Machina, I’m… I’m sorry. Please don’t blame yourself anymore. It hurts…” It hurt more than her actual injuries. She already knew he was doing his best. Why couldn’t that be enough? She couldn’t stand seeing him continue to beat himself up.

Once he set his mind to something he will do it unless what stops him hits the right buttons. His pace slowed down once she wrapped her arms around her neck then come to a full stop. Is she..crying? “D-Deuce!? Are you--!” Air only escaped his mouth, unable to produce any sound to counter her statement. 

     An embarrassed Machina wasn’t so bad at all. Another laugh, soft and gentle, as she reached over and lightly tugged on his sleeve. “Machina? Thank you.” His attempt to cheer her up like this was much appreciated. She felt silly, and a little guilty, that she had put him in such an awkward position prior to this rock search. It was nice, though. She felt she’d gotten closer to him, something she’d wanted since he and Rem were added to the class. It was better for teamwork. 

   “You like chocobos quite a bit, don’t you? Just like Ace. You’d get along very well.” And maybe she could introduce him to Lulu when they got back.

“Huh?” He blinked twice, green orbs glanced down to her hand then up to her face. “W-why are you thanking me for?” if she knew that he took a glance of her underwear she would probably slap him, not thank him. 

     She was oblivious to the effect she had had on him by getting closer. Nothing seemed wrong here to her and it was very comfortable. The embarrassment she had felt earlier was suddenly gone as tiredness washed over her now that she could really relax.

   “Machina, you’re kind. Please don’t let anyone change that…” Her words trailed off at the end, and after a long moment of silence, only soft breaths could be heard from her as her body was now leaning against his for support. How quickly she had fallen asleep after getting so comfortable.

“Huh?” he blinked to her words. What does she mean he should not let change him? Did she know something that he does not? (probably deja vu of her countless spirals.)

While pondering of what she said, it was awfully quiet. He tilted his head to see her soundly...sleeping. His heart skipped a beat when he saw her face. Such peaceful face he does not recall ever seeing something like it. There was a tempting to pinch her cheek because it was rosy but he refrained from waking her up. A soft smile curled his lips, careful fingers brushing her bang away from her eyes. “...Rest well, Deuce.” Suddenly, his tension melted. What was that? All he has to do now is to not move. If she can rest then it is great. He can handle the trip back to Rubrum soil in this condition.
