“It’s good that you’ve been able to adapt to things like that.” Arthur says, continuing with his doodling. Mostly geometric shapes, from the look of it. “I know I probably couldn’t fix up a place like the Last Stop. I hope your boss appreciates all the work you put into it.”
“Wyatt. Got it.” Arthur smiles briefly. He’s still figuring out where the boundaries are, playing it safe in that regard. Better to be too cautious than to risk earning immediate dislike.
“That sounds like a pain. I’ve always been pretty hopeless with that kind of thing, myself. You seem pretty determined to fix it, though. You run into these kinds of problems at lot, at work? How do you deal with them?”
If only that were an option. There was no denying that Maverick needed psychiatric help-- again, impressive file-- but the fact that he wasn’t seeking it of his own accord... complicated things. Helping someone who didn’t want to be helped-- or, at the very least, resented the fact that they needed to be helped-- wasn’t the most ideal situation.
“Where are you working now, Mister Maverick?-- Do you prefer that or Wyatt?”
“It’s... well, not having violent outbursts is something.” Arthur’s pen works in short, sharp strokes, the movements all wrong for letters, and he’s not looking at the page besides. He’s doodling-- it helps him focus.

“Fair enough.” Arthur nodded. Prickly patients were also nothing new. And, judging from the man’s file, it was no wonder Maverick was antsy. Hopefully the tried-and-true tactic of not being an asshole would work out. It hadn’t steered Arthur especially astray yet.
“Anything you’d like to add to the file? They leave out anything you think is important?”

“Ain’t you supposed to have my file? Mile fuckin’ long, I’m told.” With several pages from several different doctors, detailing the difficulty of dealing with Wyatt as a patient.
“I’ve seen worse.” Arthur offers his tiny, friendly smile. It’s not a lie-- Wyatt Maverick’s file is... impressive, one could say, but it wasn’t the worst.
And even if it was, Arthur wouldn’t say it.
“And what do you think would happen if this void didn’t have anything left to consume?”
He passes a little bottle of water to his patient. It looks like he could use it.

—not disheveled, precisely. His clothes are clean and new, but surreally mismatched. The overall effect burns the eye.
His eyes dart. As if for comfort he fingers his ring of office.
“I don’t know,” he breathes, in a raspy unfamiliar voice, “if I’m really human anymore.”

Drugs. This looks a lot like drugs.

“She’s old enough to know that something’s wrong. I’m not saying to tell her all the details, just... let her in, let her know how you’re feeling. She might not understand, yet, but she might just appreciate the honesty.”

“Have you spoken to her about it? I don’t mean scolding her, I mean having a conversation about why she’s upset with you. Kids are often more mature than we give them credit for.”
“That is, you understand, a very common an reasonable response to trauma. You program yourself to do whatever it takes to avoid punishment, follow that pattern for years-- and even once the need for that behavior is gone, the programming remains. You’re not alone in this kind of behavior, Gideon.”
He straightens in his seat. “Can you think of any ways you might break yourself out of this pattern? Allow yourself to be more honest with your loved ones, knowing they won’t hurt you if you don’t perform exactly how they want you to?”

“That was probably an unfortunate metaphor.”
He draws into himself, hunching over, watching the clock to avoid Dr. Locane’s eye.
“I don’t have a self. No backbone. I just take whatever form people put me in.”
“That sounds like it would have been a useful survival tactic, growing up in the Wish House.”
His tone is level, obnoxiously kind and genuine as ever.
“Do you find that it’s negatively impacting your life, now that you no longer need it?”
