If I told you what it was that would ruin the entire surprise. 

“…Alright.” Kon says, giving Clark his full attention. He holds a hand out, lazily, but he smiles a little. 

Clark seems to be holding something behind his back, and Kon only gets a moment’s warning of him stepping within arm’s reach before--

WHAM! A cake, directly in the face. Judging from the debris, it was chocolate with vanilla frosting. True to form, in his other hand he’s got wet wipes to help clean up, although he’s not going to offer them right away.

 The Green Lantern action figure has just crashed through a lego city that Kon previously built on a blanket in the living room, and the stuffed dinosaur toy in his other hand - that roars when its tail is squeezed - is the assailant responsible. One tiny foot is propped on top of the new lego rubble while Kon yells along with the sound effect, quickly making ‘pew’ noises afterwards as the action figure flies back up for a punch attack. Some legos go airborne. The siren of his toy truck begins to blare, the stuffed dino chucked across the coffee table.

“Take that, jerk face!” He calls, ready to run and tackle. He’s so invested in this imaginary plot that he doesn’t hear Clark creeping up behind him. 

“———!” Startled, Kon shrieks, limbs out-stretching as he’s flung, upside down, towards the ceiling. He erupts into a flurry of excitable giggles when he descends into Clark’s engulfing squeeze.

The simultaneous uptick in all three of their heartbeats makes them synchronize for a moment in a way that Clark wishes the other two could hear; he takes a moment, steadying himself, looking from Loki to Nate and back with his fingers curling around the box in his pocket.

“…Hold on,” he interrupts himself, a smile coming to his face as he grabs a napkin and wipes the smudge off of Loki’s cheek. There– perfect, in an imperfect way, which was in fact the best way to be in reality. He crumples the napkin onto her plate and half-turns to face her, mirroring Nate on her other side, his palms hot. 

“We were thinking,” he starts in earnest, again locking eyes with Nate to draw reassurance with him, “that things between the three of us have been, um, really good, since we’ve all moved in and started living together. And, uh, we can’t exactly.. combine all our taxes or anything, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do this anyways. In the way that really matters.” He pulls the ring box out, letting it click open, Nate’s ring a red ruby set in a silver band, the ring split in what was originally intended to be an engagement/wedding set but now works perfectly for each of them to wear a piece of the other two. His breath escapes him in a shudder of emotion and energy as he sets it on the table and looks to Nate one last time.  @captain-atom

Nate is blushing, now, red dusting his cheeks and following all the way up to his ears–and his silvery hair doesn’t help with his complexion one bit–but he continues on where Clark leaves off, his own heartbeat a damn near crescendo in his ears. He picks up his own two boxes, fumbling with them a little bit as he does, and flips open one after the other.

Green, an emerald, and sapphire blue. It’s obvious who’s is for who, though he still smiles a little bit up at the corner of his mouth at his achievement.

“What we’re sayin, I mean–what we’re askin’, is pretty obvious,” He powers through, pausing once to clear his throat so he can finish before he’s overtaken with emotion, as he tends to get in situations such as these.

“I wanna spend the rest o’ my life with the both of you, through thick ‘n thin, no matter what happens–so..Will you marry us, Loki?” He holds her hand in his, one of the blue rings delicately held between two fingers as he waits for her answer, patient.

He’s pleased with himself, and with Clark–not because they’re taking Loki by surprise, but because he’s been looking forward to this moment for weeks, between fitting for rings, and sneaking around just to find the perfect time and place.

All the apprehension, the slight fear, melts away as soon as Clark says taxes—something Loki never really thought would happen with that word involved given some questionable choices she’s made with her property, but alas, it happens anyway. Still, curiosity and hesitant hope surge within her. Of course there’s no way they can do it legally, because the world still hasn’t opened itself up wider to love in all its forms.

Thank every god that the three of them have.

Loki’s crying before Nate even starts talking, eyes fixed on the ring boxes. Her chest hurts, maybe partially due to the large amount of greasy food she’s had today, but mostly because her heart swells with adoration and gratitude in a way she’s never felt before. Coming here to Earth after everything that had happened all those years ago, she’d never thought she’d love or be loved again, let alone…. this.

She wants so badly to be able to say yes, but when she opens her mouth and tries to summon it, she just chokes up, a dry sob that only coaxes more tears to roll down her face, and they’re coming fast. At least she can nod vigorously, which maybe makes her hiccup a little, and put her left hand out no matter how hard it’s shaking so Nate can put the ring on her finger, slipping her right hand into Clark’s in the hopes he can steady her.

There’s a moment of confused jumbling where plates and papers are pushed out of the way to make room for them to exchange the rings, the low light twinkling off the stones. The rest of the food is going to have to be put in to-go boxes; the three of them are too emotionally wraught to eat now. 

“I think that’s a yes,” Clark says with a soft laugh, grabbing a clean napkin to give to Loki and saving one for himself, blinking away the tears threatening to spill. The staff are starting to shoot them looks, and Clark sends one right back, eyes narrowed a little in a silent leave us alone, please and thank you. 

“Do you like the rings?” Clark murmurs, not really expecting a verbal answer from Loki at this stage but wanting her opinion anyways-- it’s always risky, this kind of thing, even if Nate and him both know she’d be likely to say yes in any case.
