@faolanmeadowesâ
âNow, I know you say our dear Fiona is a bit forgetful,â Caoimhe gives a low laugh as she murmurs in her husbandâs ear, trying to keep her voice quiet. âBut I have a feeling she quite purposely forgot about us this time around.â Her head tilts in the direction that Faolanâs niece went, presently offering a drink to her newfound company â the selkie whom the wee thing had quite clumsily dodged around questions about only a few days ago. âSeems theyâre rather keen on one another.â She gives a knowing smirk and a playful wiggle of her eyebrows before resting her cheek against Faolanâs shoulder once more. âDonât suppose you and I were ever so covert â not about how smitten we were, anyway. As for the fae thing, wellâŚâ Caoimhe lets that sentence trail with another gentle laugh, knowing full well that they both recall that story. Heâd been mere moments from the grave thanks to his supposed witchcraft when sheâd jumped in. How long ago and far away that seems now, but still, she recalls it quite clearly. Another thing she recalls is the consequence of exhaustion â something sheâs beginning to feel as the bandâs slow song ends and they launch into another jaunty number. Caoimhe sighs, looking as regretful as she is weary while she straightens up to look at Faolan rightly. âI almost hate to say it, but Iâm not quite sure I have another dance in me just now. Wouldnât want to vanish, given Iâm not sure theyâll let me back in once Iâve reappeared.â Instead, she takes her husbandâs arm, giving him a gentle nudge. âCare to explore with me, my love? I like to think that I make fine company.â
âI can only imagine she does want you grinning at her the entire evening, your thoughts are written across your face. She is the same way, I believe she is more your niece than my own,â he remarks with a smile, eyes shifting over to where Fiona talks with the selkie woman. âHave you heard AurĂŠlieâs worries on the selkie? I am unsure what to think, but look, if that is not a look I gave you once upon a time then...â He sighs quietly, a nostalgic smile on his lips as the pieces of their first meeting flicker to life in his head, breaking through the bolts heâs used to hide them away. Itâs a relief to think of them without pain, to remember them without the fogginess of age, and he presses a kiss against the side of her head, laughing quietly as the melody changes. âI will not complain about a chance to escape with you for a few minutes. I daresay the party will live without two stuffy fae around,â he murmurs, lifting his brow. This gala is nothing like the events theyâve visited over the years, and he cannot find it in himself to be bothered at an excuse to escape the flickering emotions. Faolan steers her away from the swaying bodies to the edge of the dance floor. âGardens, maybe, I am afraid the balcony feels a little full.â Less full, mostly too amorous for visitors right this moment, and he leads them outside to the open air. The sky is darkening slowly, too slowly, he feels it will be several hours yet before they can see the stars. âDo you remember when I asked to meet you  the night after we met and I took you to a glen to see the stars? Anyone else would think Iâm mad asking a lass like you to meet me in the dark, but you were not afraid. A good shock will topple anyone.â He learned that in the course of their friendship and the romance to follow.
