Laura was being annoyingly protective after Birthday Gate—to be fair, it wasn’t like Stiles knew Derek was allergic to chlorine and that pushing Derek into the pool would cause him to break out in hives and eventually result in him having to call his sister to pick him up. Stiles didn’t know!! Laura was convinced that Stiles did it to embarrass Derek but Laura wasn’t there when Stiles handed him his own towel (!!!!!!!) with a furrowed look of concern that hadn’t appeared on Stiles’ face prior to Birthday Gate—and Derek just wanted to help the lacrosse team out, he swears. BHHS pride, support the fundraisers, y'know.

In Derek’s defence, Stiles was trying to roll a XXL onto two bananas and Derek is not equipped to handle this visual imagery. Nor will he be able to survive this project watching Stiles trace and cut out that on felt fabric.  Maybe Derek can tap out and just fail the project?

Derek and Stiles get paired together for a chemistry project and Stiles tries to blow Derek off for lacrosse.  Derek is more than willing to do most of the work if he can somehow arrange for Stiles to come to his house and…assemble the poster together or something, anything.

It doesn’t rip him apart to hear Stiles describe their tentative friendship (generously phrased) as ‘mutually beneficial’. It’s not like Derek says 'yes’ every time because Stiles has a great work ethic.  As long as Stiles continues to assume that Derek is benefiting from a sudden popularity boost and not anything else then he is safe from Stiles mocking his feelings, which is far worse. “Derek, you realise you get to choose your partners this time, right?  Derek?”

“Der, maybe you’ll get locked up with Stiles in a closet. They still play that at birthday parties, right?” “I don’t want an excuse to make out with Stiles!” “Oh Derek,” says Erica and Laura as they shoot him simpering fond looks.

Be cool Derek, Stiles is only calling you because none of his friends is stupid (eager) enough to pick him up, it’s not like you two are suddenly friends and you’re number 2 on his speed dial.  But the chemistry project was ages ago and he still kept your number so…so maybe Derek should start saving up for a flatscreen.  It’d be symbolic.

There are three reasons to choose War of the Worlds for his final term paper: 1) Orson Welles is awesome!! And, Laura already wrote about it in college so he can sneak a peak at her bibliography; 2) Stiles may have picked War of the Worlds as well; and 3) He and Stiles can watch the movie after and compare the differences between visual and auditory experiences, make fun of Tom Cruise a little, maybe. He’ll just have to convince Kate to give his idea back, crap.

The only reason Derek even knows what “DTR” means is because Erica forced him to listen to her bitch about her boyfriend problems. It really is not necessary for Erica to “return the favour” and coach him through his first relationship (It isn’t one. Doesn’t. Exist. Who else doesn’t have a R to D?  Him and Stiles.). He’s pretty sure him and Stiles are bros at the very least. Bros who get indignant on the other’s behalf and marches unsuccessfully to the principal when a girl steals Derek’s term paper topic–even when said girl’s father runs the school. And plus, Derek is fine filling whatever quota of Stiles’ social circle, even if he’s the ‘quirky loser friend’-slice of that pie chart.
