You keep saying you came here because Art needed matches… I think you came for something else. You think I came here for you? You think I came here to throw it all away for you? Maybe you just wanted to see me. I have seen you, you look like shit.

stanford era au where after the first time patrick visits, art and tashi go to see him off and, like a good boyfriend, patrick gives tashi a super romantic film worthy goodbye kiss, but art—little shithead teen boy he is—goes “what? no kiss for me?” but patrick’s never backed down from a challenge in his life so he grabs arts face in his hands and gives him an obnoxious slobbery smooch on the cheek and it becomes a ritual where every time he kisses tashi goodbye he’s also gotta give the homie a cheek smooch to go with it. however one time he’s actually running really late so he’s a little frazzled and when he goes to say goodbye, he gives tashi a peck on the cheek and then plants one square on art’s stunned mouth before scampering off
look i know Tashi Duncan saying "you're not a member of my fan club" was iconic and all but i do feel it wasn't quite the moment everyone makes it out to be because Patrick literally says "no?" and then storms out leaving her looking heartbroken, anyway this is just me thinking people don't quite get the Patrick/Tashi dynamic and what she loathes (and is obsessed with) about him is that he doesn't see her as beyond human. He sees a person (a very hot person) and he is one of the only people who treats her that way
Love this take! I agree with the point that Tashi/Patrick is beautifully complicated and that Tashi is both annoyed by and values the fact Patrick sees her ugliness, her grittiness, her coldness and doesn’t shy away from it. Just loves her anyway. And takes everything she dishes out.
Patrick doesn’t ask for more than she can or wants to give. He doesn’t ask her to soften herself or make herself into anything.
But being seen also is painful. Especially for people who hate being vulnerable. I think Tashi is as drawn to that element of what she shares with Patrick as she is scared of it.
Because she doesn’t want to confront the truth, not completely. She doesn’t want to face her grief over losing tennis and Patrick looks at her and sees how broken she is.
Art needs the masks just as much as she does. He won’t threaten status quo. But Patrick reminds her of who she once was, what she used to have, and I think that’s painful at the same time it’s electrifying.

So so obsessed with the ways that Xie Zheng finds to insert himself within the already established dynamics of Fan Changyu's family and her life.
It's the care and affection he shows for Changning. He saw how important her sister was to her and resolved to be her big brother, to care for her and look out for her like Changyu does, to play with her and let her drag him around as she likes. A small child dragging around the fearsome Marquis of Wu'an. It's the way that when they are attacked his first priority is to protect Changning, when he has to fight he tells her to look away and count to ten like Changyu did, and when Changyu finally arrives he tells her to grab her sister and run, knowing that he will die facing those men alone but still understanding that whatever budding relationship they have, it will never come close to the responsibility she has for her sister.
It's the interest he takes in her job, reassuring her that is doesn't scare or disgust him, asking to help so she can show him how it's done, buying her hand cream so that she can continue working without hurting herself. It's the way that he sees her powerwalking across town followed by a gang of thugs and follows her, not to stop her, not to fight her battles for her, but to quietly step in at the very last moment to make sure that the conversation ends when she wanted it to.
It's how he immediately promised her to help her against her uncle in court and then followed through on it, almost exposing his identity for the sake of protecting her.
It's the way he writes an itemized receipt of everything the Song family owes her so that he can back her up the next time she has to ask them for her due.
It's the way the narrative constantly mirrors them, making Xie Zheng take his cues from her. We see her fight off people trying to steal her house; the next time they come he does the same. We see her tell Changning not to look; when he is forced to fight in front of her he does the same. We see her standing up for herself over and over again and rather than trying to fight her battles for her he simply stands to the side and gives her whatever support she might need.
It's funny because it seems like Xie Zheng really did mean it when he said that he would do whatever she said (though I'm sure we'll see him break that promise more than once, especially now that the court seems to be getting more involved in the plot). Their marriage may be fake, but Xie Zheng is certainly behaving like a matrilocal husband.
PURSUIT OF JADE 逐玉 (2026)
— I want you to know, that in this world anyone can be the Prince Consort. But, I, Xie Zheng, won't. I already married into your family. I can only belong to Fan Changyu. In this lifetime, my heart belongs to you alone.

A/N: I have only watched the show! Haven’t read the web novel. So characterization is based on show.
&&&
It’s the strangest thing… there’s no one moment he can point to when he fell in love with Changyu.
There are moments he’s realized he loves her — when she tells him he’s safe in that pig pen she stows him away in, when he learns she sold her mother’s hairpin for his medicine…every single time she says she’ll slaughter pigs to provide for him.
He’s felt his heart expand in his chest, at times so viscerally he was afraid it would grow too big and crack a rib or two. But there was no time, it seems, when he didn’t love her. As if it was there all along, buried in him from his first breath, waiting to be unearthed — to blossom in the presence of her warmth and light.
Having no prior experience with this sort of thing, Xie Zheng can only assume this is how it works. But he’s utterly unprepared for what surfaces now that she’s here (he has no strategy, no defense).
He doesn’t recognize himself in the impulse to soften, to melt around the shape of her and mold himself to whatever she needs him to be.
Husband. Teacher. Ledger. Protector. Kitchen-hand. Anything (anything, everything, please). It’s an endless urge, pressing up from his gut to give, give, give, whatever she’ll take from him. Whatever she’ll allow.
Somehow she saw within him something worthy of saving, worthy of holding and keeping and tending. He refuses to let that grace be in vain.
Her regard is a baptism, a blessing, and at times he feels as if he’ll burn up in the brightness of it, but there’s nothing in him that would resist that. Let him turn to dust, then, let him crumble in her gaze. She gave him new life, isn’t it fitting she’d offer him the sweetness of oblivion too?
He searches inside himself for the clench, the bite, the growl of the animal he’s kept barely caged for half his life, and it’s gone quiet. Docile. Content.
Xie Zheng was a stranger to happiness. Yan Zheng… Yan Zheng knows peace.

This chat they have by the fire in Episode 28 is kind of beautiful. 🥺💔Changyu, despite all she’s lost, is SO clear about what marriage and partnership means to her. It’s incredible to see, even in deep mourning, how self-possessed she is.
And while I get Xie Cheng’s longing and desire to be with her (who wouldn’t want to keep her?!! 🥺) I also get why she needs space and time and to be doing something that gives her life meaning and purpose.
She lost her parents, what, four months ago? (Six?) and THEN lost so many loved ones from the village, her sister got kidnapped, and she’s only just found her, and then the man she thinks she knows and loves (already a huge deal for her to let him in that way) tells her he’s been lying to her for the whole time they’ve known each other, and instead of Yan Zheng he’s Xie Zheng. She’s so compassionate and forgiving, she can understand why he’s betrayed her. But he wants to act like it doesn’t change things, and it does for her.
Because Yan Zheng, her live-in husband who is kind and smart and gentle and doesn’t say much, but is endlessly supportive, and (notably!) is an orphan like her and (she thinks) has nowhere else to go — she knows what he needs. The care. The nurturing. To be provided for. To be looked after. And to share in his burdens. That’s what she knows love to be.
Marquis Wu’an can flip his hair and have ten people waiting in line to feed him. Dress his wounds. Help him strategize through his problems. She only knows her value in his life by her own understanding of partnership. She can’t be a kept woman. She can’t be a court consort. And she doesn’t know how she fits. What he could need her for.
And I think it’s so beautiful how Xie Zheng lets Changyu go, because he understands her. He tries to get her to let him solve the problem, because he wants her safe, but when she says she needs this, he gets it. He doesn’t try to argue her out of it. Or throw his weight around. He just….lets her go.
With the swords as a gift, no less. 😭They are incredible.
