we are tied to the ocean. & when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch —– we are going back from whence we came / james kidd & anne bonny of ac: black flag / by reese & hannah.
after her husband’s death when she was 18, mary was left with little in europe. little family, an unspoken role on royal ships that would lead her no where, she set sail on her own aboard a stolen ship with thrown - together crew & promises of riches. taking influence from her mother, mary dressed herself as a man long before reaching the west indies. james kidd started out a persona. a name no one could prove or disprove. the name came with more notoriety than an amateur pirate captain deserved. over the years spent as james in the public eye, he heavily came to identify with that side of himself. it lead to a road of self - discovery, & identifying as genderfluid.
small tag dump.

Leans on.
the lightest of sea breezes is caught in her hair —– a muffled scent, dulled only by the ale on her breath. they laugh in their company. too many drinks have been shared & had, mugs raising at even the poorest joke at anyone’s expense. yet his attention is with the sea, how her hair could only benefit from exposure to open waters. how the smell would never leave her, permanently tangled in her fire - red roots. how well it would pair with fresh flowers woven through locks.
his arm wraps around, loose & amicable. an inattentive eye would see only that —– friend against friend lost in his drunken splendor. they wouldn’t see what lies in his eye when he steals a glance: a wistful gaze, dreaming of what james will never truly earn. the two of them, captain & queen, sailing seas never charted.
attention is only snapped away by call of his name, a jab at his inability to focus, the drooling gob. & quickly as it’s grabbed, it falls back to the fair maiden that has come to support him, his weight now shifted to rest against her; already so far gone, he won’t remember the night.
it’s when anne laughs softer than the rest, a rumble in her chest barely noticeable —– he leans lips to ear, a smirk teasing the corners of his mouth. breath warm against her ear, undoubtedly unappealing with an intoxicated stink, he whispers,
❝ let’s sail away, ❞ he chuckles once. ❝ ‘n never look back, aye? never ‘ave to see these poor sods ugly mugs again. jus’ us & the waves. ❞

“but did you do it?”
“call me now. it’s urgent.”
“can’t you listen to me?”
“cross that. don’t answer that.”
“don’t even think about it.”
“don’t you dare walk away.”
“do it. i dare you.”
“did you think i forgot?”
“eventually… you just move on.”
“even if you still do.”
“everything will fall into place.”
“fight me, you attractive stranger.”

“rise and fucking shine, motherfucker.”
“seriously? give me a break.”
“so… what are we now?”
“so… did you miss me?”
“so… can we go eat?”
“so… when’s the next flight?”
“so… how did everything go?”
“sometimes, i wish you died.”
“so what? you did it.”
“time passes slower without you.”
“then what do you suggest?”
“the fuck? who are you?”
“then you tell me why.”
“this is not working out.”
“this isn’t what i wanted.”
“this is all a fucking disaster.”
“when did it all happen?”
“who knew you’d be here?”
“why do i even bother?”
“why do i love you?”
“why didn’t you tell me?”
