Falling for Fallon

This was a very poignant scene in the last episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. In order for his studio to be updated in preparation for his upcoming Tonight Show, An identical reproduction of the Late Night set was built in Studio 6A, the same studio that David Letterman and Conan O’Brien hosted Late Night consecutively for 27 years. For a small period of time, Late Night returned home. And if you paid attention to the configuration of the studio, you could see it. There were a double set of doors to stage left (instead of stage right) next to the band stand where the Roots played. The same set of doors that stood adjacent to four pictures Conan had on the wall during his hosting of Late Night- pictures of Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, and Dave- a tribute to the hosts of yesteryear.

After giving Seth Meyers the traditional Late Night pickle, sending his last Thank You Notes, and partying one more time with the Muppets, Jimmy Fallon stands up and walks past the Roots’ bandstand and through the double doors. Out of the studio that housed the anarchic comedy of Letterman and the absurdist dada comedy of O’Brien, and into Studio 6B, the studio that Johnny Carson coolly hosted his incarnation of the Tonight Show for the first 10 years of his reign. It was the studio where Ed Ames threw the tomahawk axe, where Tiny Tim got married, and where Carnac was born.

That hallway connects two different yet very influential parts of late night television history. And on the other side of the hall for Fallon- with his new logo on the door, and his cheering compatriots from Late Night behind it- is the next chapter of that history.

The party continues.
