creeping desolation

“𝚏𝚎𝚎𝚕𝚜  𝚕𝚒𝚔𝚎  𝚗𝚘𝚘𝚗.”     𝚛𝚒𝚌𝚔  𝚋𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚔𝚜  𝚝𝚑𝚎  𝚜𝚒𝚕𝚎𝚗𝚌𝚎  𝚋𝚎𝚝𝚠𝚎𝚎𝚗  𝚑𝚒𝚖  𝚊𝚗𝚍  𝚑𝚒𝚜  𝚗𝚎𝚙𝚑𝚎𝚠.  the  georgia  sun  beats  down  on  them  with  its  relentless  heat  and  growing  up  in  this  very  heat,  rick  knew.  the  both  have  been  walking  for  thirty  minutes,  finally  reaching  a  clearing.     “we’re  here.”

the  view  looked  out  into  a  wide  open  field  with  knee - high  grass  with  weathered  gallon  barrels  placed  through  out.     “glenn  and  i  came  out  here  not  long  ago,  thought  it  would  be  best  to  set - up  target  practice  away  from  the  prison.”     rick  takes  off his  backpack  and  kneels  to  open  it.     “we  haven’t  had  the  chance  of  coming  out  here  officially  yet,  but  with  everything  settling  down  i  felt  like  this  was  a  good  time  to  come  out  --  take  a  few  shots,  get  a  lay  of  the  land  more.”     

       he  stands  before  the  big,  LOCKED  pantry  door,  hearing  his  mommy’s  voice  echo  in  his  head.  someone  will  come  looking,  doc  and  they’ll  help  all  of  us  and  your  daddy  get  down.  but  it’s  taking  TOO  LONG,  he  misses  his  father,  stuck  behind  that  door  and   …  he  knows  he  shouldn’t  be  down  here  without  his  mom.  she  says  he’s  dangerous,  and  danny’s  seen  as  much  but  he  doesn’t  believe  that  was  REALLY  HIM,  because  that  means  his  mommy’s  dangerous  too.  they’d  both  hurt  EACH  OTHER  that  night  …  but  he  doesn’t  like  thinking  about  it.  “ hey !  you  mean  ghosties  better  leave  my  daddy  alone  alright ! ”  he  calls  out  to  the  ceiling,  to  that  metal,  faceless  door.

they’re  hiding  now,  he  knows  –  they  can’t  do  anything  without  his  daddy,  and  without  danny  being  scared.  well,  danny’s  DONE  being  scared.  “ i’m  not  afraid  of  you,  and  you  can’t  hurt  us,  or  make  my  daddy  do  anything  either.  i  won’t  let  you. ”  could  he  actually  do  that ?  maybe.  he  wasn’t  sure,  but  he  believed  he  could  if  it  came  down  to  it.

another  sixteen  hours  pass  before  jack  reawakens,  head  throbbing,  his  tongue  bone  dry,  as  the  sound  of  his  son’s  voice  came  audible  to  jack’s  senses.  lazily  he  lulled  himself  up  and  off  of  the  ground,  his  lower  back  screaming  now  just  as  loud  as  his  head  was,  getting  momentary  motion  sickness  as  he  gained  his  bearings.  shuffling  to  the  door  the  pain  of  his  head  with  paired  brain  fog  had  made  him  forget.  he’s  still  locked  away  (  𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐫  𝐠𝐨𝐝  𝐧𝐨.  ).

you       take       to       being       𝚜𝚝𝚘𝚒𝚌,          shouldering        the       burden       of      indifference       as      you      watch      fatigue       bury      itself       inside      grouped      features.        you        never        liked        to       wear       your       thoughts,         knowing       there        were       others        suffering         just        as       much       as       you,          if         not         more.          between        the        heat       and        the       hunger        that        plagued        you,          you       were       each        edging        towards         total        collapse.        

❛❛          YOU      THINK       we’ll       find      anything      here?         ❜❜          you      wonder       aloud,         the       first        time        your       tired       throat        had        uttered        a         sound       in       these        hours        shared.           you       hope       he       says      yes,         if       only        to        𝚎𝚜𝚌𝚊𝚙𝚎        𝚝𝚑𝚎        𝚜𝚞𝚗       for        a        few      moments.

𝚝𝚑𝚎  𝚝𝚘𝚠𝚗  𝚏𝚎𝚕𝚝  𝚕𝚒𝚔𝚎  𝚊  𝚐𝚛𝚊𝚟𝚎𝚢𝚊𝚛𝚍.  like  a  hollowed  out  memory  of  a  place  that  once  had  some  sense  of  life.  nestled  away  in  some  country  side,  the  thought  crossed  rick’s  mind  on  how  truly  picked  clean  a  place  like  this  would  be?  there  was  a  glint  of  reassurance  in  his  tone,     “i  think  so.”
