The words set her on edge more than anything else he had said. It hit her very core, making the roots of her teeth hurt. This wasn’t safe, this wasn’t anywhere near close to being safe. But she could save this, she knew it. Or, at least she believed it. Bretons were bred to negotiate, after all.

"Love is something that can only grow if two people spend time together. Let us be honest, we never see one another. We do not talk, we do not even have the same associates. If I were to leave now and ignore all of this as I had planned to do, there would be no risk."

She held her breath for a moment, steadying herself. “I will never love you, you will never love me. I see no problem here. This chance that worries you, and logically so, is nonexistent.”

"It doesn't matter.  Like I said, even the chance is too much risk.  I'll have to see you.  You're here, I can't avoid the College forever, no, it's the only reliable place to get good soul gems if nothing else, and there's always something else, something I need here.  And I'm not capable of love.  This I know.  I will never love you.  I'll never love anyone  That said..."

He sighed, he could feel a migraine coming on, oh what a convenient time for that.  "That said," he went on, "the fact that I could hate you less than I hate other people, even, it's too much of a risk.  I don't even really understand what a soulmate is.  It's clearly not about love if it can be between two people who barely know one another, but evidently there's a connection of sorts.  Can't have connections.  Not after Will--"

 She hummed, honestly seeming to consider the question. “I have always thought it would be interesting to have one’s heart ripped out, though I typically remove organs only after one is dead.”

There was a twinge of humor to her voice. If that didn’t help disarm the situation, at least she had managed to amuse herself once last time, even if it was over such a dark subject. Her twisted humor was the last of her worries, though.

"Excuse my saying this, as I am sure you have more to worry about at the moment, but I do hope you are aware that I had fully intended to ignore this whole ‘soul mate’ concept. I do not trust such a thing, to be honest." She gave the best shrug she could manage.

"I can pull organs out, easy.  The heart's hard to get to.  It'll hurt, I'll need to break your sternum, force aside your rib cage, prod at your lungs.  Excruciating really.  You won't enjoy it but if you think it would be interesting."

He shrugged.  "Look, I'd love to ignore it, but that's taking a risk, girlie.  I've lived too long to take too many risks, and a risk with this... it's more than I'm willing to bet on.  If there's even a chance, the smallest chance, I could love another person... I have to kill that person before anything resembling love develops.  Tha's jus' how it is.  I wish I could ignore it, lass.  Much as I love a good murder, I do, but..."

He shook his head.  "It doesn' matter if maybe it's rubbish.  Doesn' matter if you're going to ignore it, if I want to ignore it.  The chance is too much and then there's another problem."

Hm.  Looked like that Bosmer there had found her… soulmate or whatever.  Faldron had always scoffed at the notion.  He’d lived for several centuries and he’d never glowed.  And he’d never wanted to.

But bah.  Good for her…or what-not.

Except no.  No, he was glowing as well, he noticed with a glance down at his chest and a terribly unfamiliar reddish light shining even through his thick black robes.

Shit.

And she’d noticed it too.  So he closed the distance between them, grabbed her arm rather roughly and leaned in close to her ear so he could whisper.  ”You’re a lovely little thing, aren’t you?  And you’re to be my soul mate, eh?  That’s how this works, I know it is.  Seen enough of that.  You sure got the short end of this stick, didn’t you, lass?”

He paused, tightening his grip on her arm, digging his nails in and cupping her cheek.  ”See, there’s a problem, though.  I can’t have a soulmate.  That implies love, it does.  Can’t allow it.  Nothing personal, you just really lucked out here.”

The Dunmer frowned.  A glance down at his chest confirmed the fear he’d felt when he saw the Bosmer’s own heart glowing and oh, by Dagon’s weird extra arms why couldn’t it have been someone else who was destined to be soulmates with this fellow?  Anyone else?

Anyone else would have been a kinder fate, or just about anyone else.

However it was clear the Bosmer had seen that unsightly glowing as well, so there was no way around it, no way to pretend it hadn’t happened and crawl back to Avanchnzel and act like nothing out of the ordinary had happened.

No, he was, evidently, to have a soulmate.

His mind raced, his hands clenched and unclenched.  His initial thought was ‘kill him and get it over with, don’t even say anything, just nip the problem in the bud’ (and admittedly, his next seven or eight thoughts were the same) but managed to quell that urge.

Faldron didn't know what to do with himself when he noticed a warm red glow from his chest.  This was very disconcerting.  He had expected never to find a "soulmate" at all and was perfectly fine with that.  In fact, he was counting on it. 

As it was, he froze, looked around for the other person, who he knew would be glowing as well and spotted him with ease for obvious reasons and against his will, the Dunmer let out a very pitchy, very surprised noise.  He didn't know he was capable of his voice getting that high.

Well, a glance down at his chest confirmed his fears and with a glance around him, well, it wasn't hard to find someone else with a glowing heartbeat and oh.  Oh.  Now that was just cruelty really.  The poor little thing didn't deserve this.  Faldron felt a pang of...

Faldron didn't notice at first.  No, he was a bit too caught up with trying to-- by Dagon's testicles damn it-- get that spell working.  That was consuming quite a bit of his attention.  What drew him out of it was the young Breton passing.  He caught sight of the glowing on her chest, shining through those robes she wore.

He was going to point it out, loudly, and laugh.  However, a glance around the courtyard revealed no one else in sight.  Odd, perhaps it was... no, there was actually nobody around.

Wait a moment...

He glanced down and swore under his breath before approaching the Breton at a brisk pace and grabbing her roughly by the shoulder.

"I'm sorry it has to be this way," he growled, voice low as he indicated that unfortunate glowing.  "Wasn't expecting to need to kill someone here so quickly, but these things happen.  You understand, I assume?"

Over the years Faldron had become accustomed to the smell of death.  He has a nose for it, and for murder in particular.

This man reeked of it.  Not that the Dunmer found that wholly unpleasant, of course, because there's always something less pleasant than death but people don't smell of corpses without spending a little too much time among them.

Anyway, that was the first thing he noticed.  The second thing was the beating of his heart, and the warm glow he saw even through his dark clothes, and the similar glow from this... this man.

Oh.

Well, that's something isn't it? he thought and it was difficult to concentrate on anything but the terrifying redness.  What did it mean?  Did it have to mean something?

Could he nip this problem in the bud, should he even try when this man smells of death?

It was hard to concentrate with all those questions in his mind, questions and this seemingly-ordinary-but-not man with his terrible, dark, dangerous eyes so beautiful they could only belong to him.

Faldron was part of the Mythic Dawn during the Oblivion Crisis-- he helped open gates outside Anvil and Skingrad.

His problems with authority probably have a lot to do with the time he spent as a Telvanni apprentice. Okay, they definitely have a lot to do with that. Or everything to do with that.

Sadela, his only sister, died as a toddler when he was just a wee lad and he never got over it.

He's never really been in love before. Even his 'Dearest William' was just obsession and fixation more than real love, coupled with strong affection and the desire to have.
