In 2007, when the London Bridge Experience was being constructed in a vault beneath the southern abutment, the discovery of a sealed chamber containing skeletons (at least 75 adults and 5 children) frightened the builders so much that they refused to work alone.

Millstones can have many different patterns, but they are all variations on a theme. The furrows do not radiate directly outwards from the centre but are set at a slight tangent, arranged in groups called “harps” or “quarters.” Each harp is made up of a “master furrow” (which runs all the way from the eye to the outer edge) and a number of secondary furrows stemming from the master. The first furrow that is parallel and adjacent to the master arrow (second in length and depth) is called the “journeyman furrow”; the furrow parallel and adjacent to the journeyman furrow (third in length and depth) is called the “apprentice furrow”; and the furrow parallel and adjacent to the apprentice furrow (fourth and length and depth) is called the “butterfly furrow.” The bedstone and the runnerstone are carved identically. The animation shows the pattern produced from the runnerstone rotating on top of the bedstone.
