Many white authors have one or two ambiguous Brown characters and act as if it’s enough and can be called diversity when…it’s not. Their intention doesn’t matter either. It still sucks. Like if you can’t tell me how POC are treated in your world, I don’t want it. And it doesn’t have to be racism or oppression. If they don’t have any identity other than to serve as the warrior-esque figure that’s always saving the white female character and/or further their development, then you can keep it” But it’s fantasy! Race doesn’t matter.” It does. It very much does. Y’all say this and then prove over and over again why it does in fact matter. Whether in the book or in real life, race will always matter. Y’all act like Black and Brown ppl didn’t start existing until the 1600s when that couldn’t be further from the truth. Including us in your stories isn’t inspirational or “brave”. It’s simply being inclusive which should always be done. Some of y’all need to open up actual history books instead of just reading fantasy.
