A Coroika isekai except the reader is an Octoling
author notes:
𖦹 HI REALLY SORRY FOR BEING DEAD FOR MONTHS I SWEAR I HAVEN'T ABANDONED THIS SERIES I JUST REALLY STRUGGLED TO WRITE THIS WHOLE CHAPTER 𖦹 Ok onto the actual chapter, I wasn't really sure how to go about pacing cause on one hand I want to do some proper world building but on the other hand I don't wanna linger on the underground too long since I haven't even got to the freaking start of Coroika 𖦹 The plan was to make this chapter longer but I really wanted to post so I split it into two chapters instead 𖦹 Did not beta read this at all, hopefully it's coherent considering it's been sitting in my computer for a while now

This new life definitely wouldn't be easy, but the world didn't seem entirely against you if it gave you some, hopefully decent people, to be stuck with to help you learn the ropes of a morally dubious society.
A metallic scent filled your nose as you passed a series of exhaust units along the stairs.
The doctor kept going on about who Zayd was, but you couldn't really care to pay attention to what she saying with all the sights around you.
For a world deep underground, the Dome was colourful and well lit. The starry sky was a vibrant blend of pink, yellow, blue, and green speckled with white, split by the edges of the screens creating a hexagonal pattern across the dome walls, a stark reminder no matter how mesmerising it looked, it was fake.
As you walked the rusted gangways to a seperate concrete platform, you took in all the whimsical and eccentric details of the place. Large fake succulents floated between platforms. It was just like the level in game, only without all the debris, it appeared more like an area where people would pass through day to day rather than just an obstacle for Agent 4.
The path you took, involved a lot of round about methods, taking precarious metal sheets for bridges, or hovering platforms. It seemed like she was avoiding routes that involved ride rails, but if that was for your sake or hers you weren't quite sure.
The area outside of all its oddities was empty, albeit the occasional bug eyed octo trooper you had to force yourself incredibly hard to not gawk at. As you passed more octarians, the area got more populated. Eventually you reached a bustling market crammed onto one of many floating platforms, layers of stalls built with scrap metal, lined opposite sides of the section. Each stall had a unique personality to it, using whatever resources were lying around to make something borderline functional but undeniably creative in true Splatoon fashion.
The doctor brought you around, picking up miscellaneous items for you. Standard Octoling gear, some tools for hygiene from the interior of a carved out sponge, and a fishing lure. A waking up gift she called it, she never really elaborated on what it meant though.
The radio at the doctor's hip crackled to life, calling her back to whatever area she worked at, leaving you to sit in a dingy lounge at the centre of a artificially sunlit dorm block to wait for "Zayd", you couldn't help the crawling sensation in your stomach after catching something in her spiel about how this Elite Octoling steamrolled everyone in her regiment with training rougher than your actual program. You didn't even have a legal name and were already getting thrown into army training. This society really loved neglecting minors, didn't it.
Vibrant posters; educational, propaganda, (practically both), lined the walls with comically large tape where high tech panels or glassless windows were absent. The room had minor facilities, a small kitchen (if a small counter with a few cupboards, sink, and microwave could be considered as such), a rotting pool table, a notice board and some sad bean bags like the one you sat on. The most interesting part of the room was the colossal spawn point at the centre. It's antenna were comically large sticking out from the blocky walls of the machine, where several monitors flickered with magenta text. It vaguely resembled the enemy spawn points from Splatoon, but something about all the extra tech and what not told you it was probably meant for much more, or at least was more powerful than the regular machines.
Your attention drifted down to the box of basic ammenities in your lap. Studying your chest plate, it seems you were in the Splatoon 1 arc of the world. You weren't looking forward to wearing the ugly thing but you were excited by the implications for what stage at the story you were at. Maybe you'd have the chance to see some moments from the game like the final boss fight, maybe even the Callie vs Marie Splatfest if you successfully ran away?
Clack clack,
Clack clack,
Clack clack.
You heard Zayd before you saw her. Steps alternating with a metal cane as she approached you. Your gaze lifted to a tall elite octoling. "You're awake, good." Her voice was terse. About as greeting as you expected from the doctor's rant on your way down.
"Yeah... thank you for that."
She nodded subtly in acknowledgement, gesturing you to follow her with two fingers. "Leave your stuff here and put that chest plate on." You settled the box onto the beanbag.
She wasted no time in guiding you through each area of the school. Dorms, Classrooms, Cafeteria, and Showers. There were a few other areas she briefly mentioned but those were the ones you managed to internalise as you struggled to keep up with her surprisingly fast pace, either she was really pushing herself despite walking with a cane, or you were still adjusting your body.
As she abruptly stopped at an open doorway, she introduced you to the last few facilities, the shooting range, and replica stages.
“This is where we do all our practical work. Right now the rest of your squad is testing out weapons to practice with for our next simulation in an Inkling 'Turf War' stage.” You followed her down a metal staircase to an open space covered in splotches of pink and purple ink. With one hand she hurled a spare ink tank into your face, that you barely caught, fiddling with the straps to get it on your back.
The area had a uncanny aura to it, reminiscent of Octoling centric levels from the second game, with low lighting, orange tones and tense fast paced music echoing from speakers high above.
As you caught up with Zayd, groups of octolings began to notice you, but Zayd didn't seem too interested in them as she stopped at the loudest trio in the area. "Hey you guys, I need you all to help the new kid get adjusted to our schedule."
Caught off guard by Zayd's presence, the three practically jumped at the sight of her. The tallest octoling accidentally releasing his sniper's charge on his friends face in the process.
The feminine octoling on the firing end of the sniper shook off purple ink from her pigtails, bawling her hands into fists as she raised one to her friend. "HEY- WATCH WHERE YOU'RE AIMING THAT!!"
"IT WAS AN ACCIDENT-" The pale octoling handling the charger yelled back as he lowered the scope with a prominent scowl.
You spied Zayd's veins practically popping from below her goggles as she roared, "DID YOU RASCALS HEAR ME OR NOT!!" They straightened again, standing in what you assumed was meant to be the proper stance around superiors.
The third member of the group shakily saluted, "Uh, Yes ma'am!" as he stood as a barrier between his other two friends.
"You'll be working with them for a bit to figure out a weapon, I won't make you do the demo but it's still expect you to pick up a weapon for next time." She explained, beckoning you to come closer to the trio.
Still feeling groggy you mumbled in protest, "I just woke up a few hour ago.." Your eyes met with the piercing lenses of Zayd's goggles as her lips tightened, almost considering saying something but she simply walked away from you. "Woo this is totally ethical." Making sure she was out of earshot once you made the remark as you exhaled deeply. Surely it wouldn't be that bad if Inklings your age did this for fun, right?
author notes
𖦹 Had so much fun going onto the Splatoon Wiki to find some story mode stages to base the dome of 𖦹 I got introduced to the franchise from the second game so it was really nostalgic to look back at the levels for me 𖦹 Probably going to have like 2 chapters? at least before we reach actual Coroika stuff, I do have more content prepared for the next chapters so I'll hopefully post sooner this time, thanks for being patient guys!
