“I’ve always been a cat.” Felix took the opportunity to survey the many, many students of the academy around them. There were plenty of cats, to be certain, but other cats were poor company. They only cared about fish and warm beds and murdering mice in the most efficient way possible.
Ambition. That was what was missing. Who wanted to live a life of mouse catching and meat and laze about while people scratched your ears? Or worse, somehow create a dynasty and bicker over small territories when there were swords and unknown places and challenges larger than the noisy grey mutt that Professor Seteth walked around with all day.

Felix’s tail twitched. He sat up in Annette’s arms as she fumbled around to hold him properly.
“Hi Dimitri!” Annette awkwardly waved, clutching to Felix as his legs dangled downwards and his belly swung indignantly beneath her arm. “Were you in the training grounds again?”
Dimitri, prince of some country to the north, permanent fixture on the training grounds, with his perfect golden hair and bright blue eyes and ability to snap swords in half, began walking towards them. He didn’t smile so much as look pleased, hastily brushing some of his sweaty noodle-bangs from his forehead. “Is it so obvious?” He paused, tilting his head as he noticed Felix. “Ah - is this?”
Felix hissed as Dimitri reached out with a gloved hand.
“This is - Mister Grumpy. And he only pretends to be mean.” Annette glowered down at Felix. “He’s um, he helps me with my homework.”
“Oh.” Dimitri blinked. “Ah, that is kind of him. “ He looked down, offering a fake smile. “I don’t suppose you can help me with my own studies, can you?”
Felix really wanted to tell him off. Mostly because -

He should have known a lot of things.
But that was then, and now he was racing through hallway after hallway of mirrors, each one seemingly infinite and wrong.
Dimitris stared back at him. The one to Felix's right was too tall. The one to Felix's left was too charming. The one staring vacantly as he approached a corner was too helpless.
Wrong. Wrong. They were all wrong.
How many had he seen so far? Hundreds? Thousands?
How long had he been trapped? Hours? Years? His body didn't ache yet…
Yet there was no sense of time.
There… in the corner of Felix's eye…
There. That one. The one that didn't look at Felix with happiness but…
Worry.
Felix reached out and the Dimitri, the one with a slightly crooked nose and scarred fingers and all the happiness of a scorned puppy….
The world snapped.
“How did you know?” Dimitri asked, later, safe and sound beneath Felix's body in their tent.
“How did you?” Felix asked instead, unsure of just how he could explain the myriad of messy Dimitri tells.
Dimitri tapped Felix's cheek.
Felix blinked.
“You always miss this spot.” Dimitri answered gently. “When you eat curry.”
