Good As New | Fred and Cordelia
âI think what you meant was, âWe help the helpless,â Fred.âÂ
Fred almost fell out of her chair in surprise.
"Cordelia," she exclaimed, brightening, getting to her feet to hug the living daylights out of her old pal. Theyâd seen each other already, numerous times, starting on Fredâs first day in London and then at least once a day around the office, case or no case. Nonetheless, it still came as a shock to see Cordelia walk through the door every morning, armed with a customary quip and wry smile. Fred wasnât about to tackle her every single day or anything, but the idea in itself was tempting, given the dangers of their line of work and questionable record with the Powers That Be.
"Helpless? Oh, right," said Fred with a sheepish grin, shrugging a bit as she let go of Cordelia and took a step back to give her some space. "Close enoughâŚsorta. Itâs not really that different. Nobodyâs called in askinâ us for our help, anyway. Itâs just been me here, being all receptionisty. I beat myself at Tic-Tac-Toe and Hangman, but that got boring. Then I started playinâ desk trash basketball, but I lost." Disappointed, Fred took her seat again, going back to spinning in her chair. Cordeliaâs figure passed her once, twice, three times, fourth times, before Fred spoke up again, dizziness making the room as unsteady as it had felt under the influence of the Illuberis Fern. (Fred still wasnât quite sure what to make of that experience. Further data was needed to work out its mysteries.)
"Mind if I ask you a kinda personal question, Cordy?" She asked, resting her chin on her hand. Without pause, she went on, trying to voice her concerns without sound all over the shop. "What dâyou think made you come backâuh, again, I mean? The Powers, orâŚsomething else?" Fred was leaning toward something different. What else would resurrect many a fallen friend with no explanation whatsoever? She had some suspicionsâWolfram and Hart being the most obvious causeâbut nothing concrete to go on yet. She was still catching up on what occurred in her absence and who was back in action alongside her. It got her thinking. Almost anyone brought backâherself, Wesley, Cordelia, even Doyleâwas connected via notoriety to Angel, and in half of the examples, attached to the employ of Wolfram and Hartâs Los Angeles branch. Was this a ploy of the Senior Partners to gain revenge on their vampire champion? Wesley said the team had put a dent in their organization with Illyriaâs help. Was the mass exodus from death to life part of yet another master plan or unearthed prophecy? Fred wasnât sure if she was being paranoid or just insightful. Perhaps, a little of both.
"Sidestepping the heavy stuff for a second," Fred added, able to look at Cordelia somewhat less dizzily than she had a moment before, "how are you liking London so far?"
A bright grin crossed Cordeliaâs lips and she couldnât help but laugh as Fred nearly tackled her to the ground when she hugged her. Returning the embrace, she squeezed her friend just as tightly, still ever so thankful that she was back. She honestly wouldnât mind being greeted like this every day by Fred; it was a great way to start her day at work and it put her in an immediate good mood. Pulling back enough to look at Fred, her smile grew wider before she replied,
âHello to you too!â
Laughing gently, Cordelia let go of Fred and moved to lean against the edge of Fredâs desk while the other woman took her seat again in her spinny chair.
"Close enoughâŚsorta. Itâs not really that different. Nobodyâs called in askinâ us for our help, anyway. Itâs just been me here, being all receptionisty. I beat myself at Tic-Tac-Toe and Hangman, but that got boring. Then I started playinâ desk trash basketball, but I lost."
And with that, Fred started spinning again in her chair, which got Cordelia laughing all over again. Mornings were usually pretty slow at the office, which was why Fred was the only one in at the moment, holding down the fort. Normally it was Cordelia that was the first one to arrive at Angel Investigations. It was her job to open up, and she had taken it upon herself to be the one to make the coffee since, a) she wasnât a morning person, not in the least, and b) she figured everyone else that came in later would want a cup oâ Joe to start their day. But since Cordelia had taken the morning off, she had given the key to the office to Fred yesterday before they all left, so that Fred could open up shop this morning. Although it was amazing that she was allowed a few more hours to sleep in, it was time to get down to business now that she was at work. Fred had stopped spinning in her chair and was now leaning forward in her seat, chin in the palm of her hand while her elbow rested on the wooden desk.
"Mind if I ask you a kinda personal question, Cordy? ⌠What dâyou think made you come backâuh, again, I mean? The Powers, orâŚsomething else?"
The conversation had taken a serious turn, but it was something that Cordelia asked herself everyday. She had always assumed that it was the Powers that brought her back to life, but they really didnât have solid proof of that, did they? For all she knew, it could have been anything. The world that they lived in was so bizarre that it could very well be a number of things, and not just a one thing. She also knew that when Fred said âsomething else,â that she was referring to Wolfram and Hart. Tucking her arms across her chest, Cordelia let out a soft sigh, âI wonder the same thing every day, Fred. And I still donât have that answer.â She uncrossed her arms and rested them behind her on the desk, leaning back as her gaze met Fredâs. âI mean I would like to think that itâs the Powersâ doing, that maybe they decided they still had a higher purpose for me on earth. But it is a little suspicious that all the people that have died in Angelâs life have been brought back. Canât help but wonder if any or all of this has to do with Wolfram and Hart, and if it is, I canât say Iâm surprised.â
Pursing her lips gently in thought, Cordeliaâs mind drifted to her other friends that have been brought back over the years, and more recently. Fredâs voice brought her back to reality, breaking the dream-like trance that she gets into when she let her mind drift.
"Sidestepping the heavy stuff for a second, how are you liking London so far?"
Thankful for a topic change to lighten the mood, Cordelia leaned forward in excitement. âOh my god, the shopping is amazing! Have you been? We should go. Make a day of it.â Shrugging lightly, she continued, âOther than that though, thereâs still a lot to get used to, but Iâm getting there. Itâs just totally different from California, yeno? I donât hate it, but I also donât love it. I can see myself loving it eventually though, once I get into the flow of things.â She lifted a hand to gesture at Fred before inquiring, âHow about you? Well I mean youâre probably still getting used to being back, period, but do you like it here?â
[pm] Well, I donât have to drink it so not really my problem either way. Seems like itâs a good thing, too.
[pm] Caffeine is caffeine in my opinion. You're getting the same thing from Folgers that you would from Starbucks. Minus the fancy foam and syrups, but whatever, you know what I mean. Hey maybe you should try it one day and then see for yourself, I promise it won't kill you.

leatherduster replied to your post: [pm] Blame the pure boredom of being stuck inside all the time now, but I have to know. Is your coffee really as bad as everyone's always going on about?
[pm] Itâs Folgers? Well thereâs your first problem.
[pm] Hey, beggars can't be choosers. I've got bills to pay, you know. I buy the coffee with my own money, so yeah, when I'm grocery shopping at Tesco you better believe I'm looking for the cheapest stuff they got.
[pm] Blame the pure boredom of being stuck inside all the time now, but I have to know. Is your coffee really as bad as everyone's always going on about?
[pm] Okay seriously, not everyone's talking about my coffee! It's not /that/ bad, I really don't know what everyone is going on about. It's Folgers for god's sake, how can you mess up Folgers??!
So! How come Halloween is such a big yawner? I mean, do the demons just hate how commercial itâs become?
knightinbroodingarmor replied to your post: [pm] You holding down the fort at the office alright? I know with everyone researching the Spike thing, it's gotta be rough over there. I'm still laying low... so you know...
[pm] That makes sense. Thanks for keeping everything together though. Iâve been better. Getting kind of sick of my apartment, but Faith has been staying here so it could be worse.
[pm] Of course, Angel. And somebody's gotta do it while the big boss isn't around! Not that I blame you at all, there's definitely been a few times today when I wished I could just take a vacation to get away from it all.Â
How's Faith taking it?

[pm] You holding down the fort at the office alright? I know with everyone researching the Spike thing, it's gotta be rough over there. I'm still laying low... so you know...
[pm] Besides the fact that everyone is running around like a chicken with its head cut off, yeah, I've been handling it okay. Mostly trying to keep everyone's morale up, you know?Â
How are you doing? Stupid question, obviously the answer isn't going to be "good," but I mean I can't help but imagine you sitting in a dark room alone somewhere.
Angel - 5x12Â Youâre Welcome
Who wouldnât want more interaction between Spike and Cordelia? Such a shame that James became a regular at both shows only after Charisma had left them.
Missing Puzzle Piece | Wesley & Cordelia
It hadnât failed to strike Wesley that Fred was understanding and honest and good. Even as Cordelia said the words, Wesley knew they did him few favors, other than to confirm what he had already attempted to tell himself; that he hadnât been wrong. He also had the benefit of knowing that even if he hadnât specifically done something wrong or set out intending to hurt someone, that it didnât stop them from being hurt anyway. Loneliness was a killing drug, destroying slowly over time, plucking at confidence and self-satisfaction until little remained but an empty shell. Shell. Fucking god, he hated that word. He wished it were a physical thing that he could crush under fist, throwing it a way so that it might never be uttered again, by him or anyone else.
"âŚAnd even if she wasnât, Iâm telling you right now, you had no way of knowing she was going to be back."
Nope. No way of knowing at all, but he might have believed. He could have believed. He hadnât had to shut himself down like a shop on Christmas Day. Wesley knew the truth of why he had, why even when Angel had been attempting to contact Willow to seek her help in restoring Fredâs soul, Wesley had merely said that she was gone and followed the path of revenge instead. Better to hope for nothing and be proven wrong than to hope for something and be proven right. âNo,â he agreed dully, âbut it seems to be a given for members of our group, doesnât it? You, Angel, Fred, Spike, Buffy⌠me. Back from the dead. Or hell. Or heaven. It wasnât completely outside the realm of possibility. I told myself it was, so I could survive.â That wasnât a bad thing. It was human nature, to create an armor for yourself, coping mechanisms that allowed you to live and move in the world. He couldnât wait. It was beyond what was expected of him, and yet, there was guilt, rearing its ugly head, whispering doubts in his ear.
âDonât blame yourself for any of this, okay? None of this is your fault. You thoughtâhell, we all thought Fred was gone for good. By waiting for her you would have missed out on a great woman like Penelope. And I know I can speak for Fred when I say that she wouldnât have wanted you to wait around forever for something that was most likely not going to happen. She would have wanted you to move on with your life, and to find happiness again.â
People chatted at other tables, a door swung open and closed, noodles and rice and meats sizzled in woks in the kitchen area behind them, people clinked their glasses together in celebration, and yet, for Wesley, Cordelia was the only thing that existed in the room. As she spoke, she drowned out all other occurances, begging his attention be dedicated solely to her. She spoke in a way that told Wesley to listen, and listen good. Her voice was soft and meaningful yet behind it was the quiet insistence that she was right, and if he argued otherwise, she would smack him upside the head. âI know,â he said, finally. âI still wish it were easier, for all of us, but I suppose thatâs unavoidable now.â
Wesley had never seen evidence of an almighty God. In fact, what he had seen was the contrary. He had seen evidence of several, from different dimensions and times, with different motivations, but in spite of the bastarding things the Powers That Be did sometimes, he thanked them sincerely Cordelia Chase and her next words proved why.
"Weâre only human. And thatâs very noble of you, Wes. A lot of guys would probably just give up and go with the other woman. Youâre one of the good ones. Either of them would be lucky to have you, whomever it is that you end up with.â
Nobility wasnât a quality he often accused himself of possessing, nor was being âone of the good onesâ. The hard truth was he didnât think he was worthy of either of them, but for whatever reason, Penelope wanted to be with him. She wasnât in second place. She wasnât a consolation prize. She was someone who had graced his life, and who he was bloody lucky to have. There was a big difference between being noble and knowing when you were onto a good thing. âIâll try and remember that.â His smile was small, but sincere as the words left his lips. âYouâre not that bad either.â He knew her well enough to know sheâd understand what he really meant, but just in case, he clarified anyway, his tone ringing with quiet truth. âIâm glad youâre back.â
It seemed that whenever Cordelia would get through to Wesley, when she could see him slowly starting to agree with her and possibly forgive himself, that he would start doubting himself again, a wounded look of pain in his bluish-gray eyes. She put herself in his shoesâwell, she didnât really need to, did she? Cordelia could relate to Wesley when it came to her situation with Doyle. He was gone, maybe forever, and the shell that they called Declan was all that was left of him. Moving on. Itâs so much easier said than done, like most of the advice that people give to others. The whole, âdo as I say and not as I doâ saying had so much truth behind it; when youâre not the one hurting, itâs so simple just to say, âget over it.â But to actually get over it; well thatâs a whole other story. Time heals most wounds, but there are just some things people wonât let themselves get over.
âNoâŚbut it seems to be a given for members of our group, doesnât it? You, Angel, Fred, Spike, Buffy⌠me. Back from the dead. Or hell. Or heaven. It wasnât completely outside the realm of possibility. I told myself it was, so I could survive.â
Although she knew that there was no way for him to know that Fred would be back, she did also understand where he was coming from. Weird things like that did happen often in their world, among many other things. Cordelia couldnât count how many times sheâd wished that she just had a normal life, but then she found herself taking it back, knowing that she wouldnât be the woman she was today if she never discovered the supernatural world. Sheâd be living the life she always dreamed of when she was in high school, but then she would still be the same stuck-up superficial girl that no one liked, not even herself. No, she wouldnât trade her life for anything. She remembered when the PTB took her visions away and threw her into a ânormalâ life; she had still managed to find her way back to Angel, Wesley, and Gunn. Granted, Angel was crazy and Wes was missing an armâŚYeah, she definitely would choose the life where her friend that was sitting in front of her had both of his arms. Her brows knit together in a frown while she shook her head simultaneously,
âAnd so what? We all deal with our demons differently. Sure, it might not have been the healthiest way to cope with things, but it helped you get through it, right? And that just brings us back to the whole waiting around thing. You did what you had to do to move on, Wes. It wouldnât have helped anyone, especially yourself, if you had sat around and waited the rest of your life, beating yourself up over it.â
She wasnât sure if what she had just said was comforting, or if it even made any kind of psychological sense, but she knew that it needed to be said. People do deal with things differently, and although denial wasnât the best way to go about it, sometimes you just need to pretend like itâs all okay for a little while before plunging yourself into the cold dark reality.
âI still wish it were easier, for all of us, but I suppose thatâs unavoidable now.â
Her lips curved into a soft reassuring smile before she leaned forward in her seat once again, her tone laced with sincerity,
âDonât worry, Wes. I know itâll get better.â Her tone then had a more comical air to it, âAfter all, havenât the PTB put all of us through enough shit? I think we deserve some kind of reward, donât you think?â Winking playfully, Cordelia reached forward to take another sip from her wine glass.
âIâm glad youâre back.â
Offering her old friend a cheeky grin that grew ever wider, Cordelia cocked her head to the side before replying, âI know, me too, Wes. Me too.â
[pm] Har bloody har. Laugh it up, Valley Girl.Â
We never had that group dinner, did we?
[pm] Hey! Watch who you're calling Valley Girl, Tea-and-Crumpets!
And no, no we didn't. I think that's partly my fault, for being so busy and all. I hope Penelope doesn't think I'm being Miss Avoidy or something! Let's try to reschedule for sometime this week or next, whenever is good for everyone. I need to talk to Angel again too, see when he's free.
watcheresque replied to your post: [pm] Is there a less awkward way to begin these online conversations rather than "hello"?
[pm] I donât think I want to say any of those things. Iâve missed you, too. All quiet on the homefront, really, aside from the usual nuisance vampires and strange deaths.
[pm] Yeah I think I'd have to stake you if you ever said "omg" except now I just imagined it in a British accent and I'm falling out of my chair laughing hahahahahaha sorry Wes, it's just too good!
But that's good. I mean not the vamps and deaths, but that things haven't been too crazy around here. Glad I didn't miss anything too juicy!

[pm] Is there a less awkward way to begin these online conversations rather than "hello"?
[pm] Well you could always go with the, HEY OMG HOW R U, but since we both aren't middle school girls I think a simple "hello" would suffice? Or, "how's it goin'," "what's shakin' bacon," or whatever it is those crazy kids say these days. But anyways, hi Wes, I've missed you! What's the latest?
A box of butter tarts arrives from Buffy! This batch actually tastes okay!
