this is a really great question, thank you for asking!

the short answer is: nico cannot stand cigarettes, theres nothing anyone could do to convince him to ever give it a chance himself.

the longer explanation of this is that as a medical professional in the modern age, he does feel responsible to some degree to take people’s health seriously and advise against smoking. on top of that he is especially sensitive, not to the smell of a cigarette smoke on its own (even if he does find it unpleasant), but to the smell of nicotine as it starts to have negative affects on the human body. its a significantly stronger and nastier smell to him. as a result of being so hyperaware of decay and disease as a result of consistent smoking he often can’t help telling people (insisting) they should quit, telling them how they could do so, what might be best for them specifically, occasionally not so subtly telling them exactly what problems he can sense from them if he feels its a dire enough situation.

i’m sure you can imagine how uncomfortable and unsettling it would be to have a stranger getting a bit too close into your personal space, explaining to you at length the benefits of quitting such a bad habit and recommending resources to you while you’re just on your commute to work on the bus. all while thinking to yourself “i haven’t even smoked today, i’ve never smoked a cigarette in front of this man.”
