EXPLORATORY DESIGN.

Style Tiles <3

A Style Tile is a design deliverable consisting of fonts, colors and interface elements that communicates the evolution of a visual brand for the web. Learn how to use them here.

All over the world and even all over a country there are different customs and traditions on certain events. Some of them may be rather old, some of them are rather new - and there are very diverse. This is the basis of my idea. It would be great to haven an app, where everybody could enter their tradition in order to generate a map of the demographic distribution of different traditions. An example might be Christmas which is celebrate by different countries on different days and different figures bring the presents to the children. It might be good to know about these things when being on holiday. Moreover, it would be a great tool to collect all of them and for them not to become extinct.

How well do you know your fonts? :D

Good Typography. This is a children's book I have at home. In my opinion the font is very wisely chosen, as sans-serif fonts are usually far more easily to read which is especially important for children.

Bad Typography. In my opinion this font is far too overwhelming. It's the business card of a graphic designer I know, and I think there is too much decoration with the name as there is glow, shadow and all those colours.

Good Design.  Last week we had to bring a piece of good design to class. I decided for this glas with a double layer. It's really useful as it can contain hot beverages without burning the fingers when drinking - unlike other cups or glasses. It's really simplistic design, as it uses plain air in order to isolate the heat :) I like the fact that there is no handle necessary because usually they are not very comfortable.

Hybrid Sketching.  We've skipped a few pages in our sketching workbook and are now creating Hybird  Sketches (See Chapter 3.10 ). With hybrid sketches on has to take a photo of the context where the interaction takes places. This image is then used as the background of the sketch in order to display the context of use. Yesterday, I created a user interface for a stove // oven - and added 2 new functions today.  This new user interface should now be described by a hybrid sketch, which can be seen in above. It illustrates the security featurs - which enables the user to turn on function which only enables the user to turn on the stove, if the password is provided :)

The Vanilla Sketch. Today we had to provide two additional features which are made possible since we created the touch interface yesterday. This two features are illustrated above.  First of all, it will be possible to implement a timer - which will enable the oven to automatically turn off after a certain predetermined period of time. The oven could beep when turning off so the user would be informed that the dish // the cake is finished :) The other features is something concerning security. As children often turn on  the hot plates when they are tall enough because they think it's a kind of toy - the touchscreen would enable to implement a certain security mechanism which would involve entering a PIN-code in order to be able to turn on the stove. (For turning the stove off should be made possible also without PIN-Code because in emergency this is an important feature). I tried to illustrate those features above, using drawings annotations, notes and arrows :)

Upside Down. Today, inspired from Astrid's Blog ( http://strawberriiii.wordpress.com ) I decided to sketch this woman from  http://roggles.deviantart.com/art/Elsa-Sketch-439147371 . :) When sketching human it's especially difficult to get the eyes right.

The Vanilla Sketch. Today's task was to take an existing manual for kitchenware and develop a touchscreen interface for that. I went for the stove because I often unintentionally turn on the switch for the wrong hot plate, because for me the switches are not positioned intuitively. On the top of my sketch one can see the switches as there are now - 2 for the oven and four for the stove. For my new touch interface I provided two sketches. The first one is for the use of the stove. There are four circles for each hot plate one. They are ordered intuitively in order to be able to get a right conceptual model. In order to turn on a hot plate one has to touch the appropriate hot plate on the interface and then position the scrollbar on the right according to the desired temperature. In order to enable the extended parts of a hot plate one simply has to touch the respective parts on the touch interface. The second screen shows the interface for the oven. There are only two parameters one can choose from - namely the name of the programm and the degrees. When clicking on either one, a combobox appears where one can choose from the programs or the temperature. I really tried to integrate the elements proposed in pages 91-94 of the Book "Sketching User Experience" which are drawing, annotations, arrows and notes. I think it's very important to add annotations and notes to one's drawings as they really improve the understanding of a drawing if someone is not familiar with a certain topic. I tried to use different colors in order to be able to differantiate between drawing and annotation. Especially arrows are an important tool - I will use them more often in the future to emphasize important points of my drawings :)

Upside down. For me it's very difficult to get the proportions of my sketchings right - i defintely need to work on that a little bit more :)
