Really specifically: âall men are disgusting abusive sex-crazed monstersâ was a belief used to bolster heteropatriarchy in my old church by positioning women as a necessary gatekeeping & moderating force. Women could aid men in the struggle to keep their Beastly Instincts under control by dressing modestly and eventually entering into a marriage where their love and support and constant sexual availability (and I use that term extremely deliberately here) would help keep that man a productive member of society. This kept men blameless (any abuse or sexual misconduct is just in their nature as men!) while allowing the church to constantly victim-blame women - because if you got hurt, itâs because you obviously werenât doing Enough to keep whatever man hurt you reigned in.
This system dehumanized everyone in it, but it most specifically used the idea that men are inherently Bad to prop up patriarchy, and thatâs why I canât fucking stand to see the same base ideas crop up in supposedly feminist spaces.
âWomen have more sensitive spirits and are naturally closer to God and need to help men out!â âThe man is the head of the family but the woman is the neck and she needs to keep him facing the right direction.â Shut up shut up shut up shut UP Iâm SEVEN and NOT responsible for my dadâs shitty behavior! Yep, this describes most if not all organized religion and the Republican party.Â
This describes Evangelical Christianity and the Republican party. Dare I say it, MOST organized religion doesn't do this.

This very much reminds me of the LDS church. I think saying this is what the Republican Party does is a bit of a stretch though. It could be argued that the Democratic Party does the same thing.

The phrase âI know this church is trueâ, always can be known as a false testimony.
The speaker should be saying âI wish this church were trueâ or â I hope this church is trueâ. Â
To know, Â is to say you have absolute evidence.
There has never been such evidence.
That is exactly what caused me to deconvert. I remember sitting in a study room in university, bothered by the fact that I was learning to be a critical thinker about everything except my religion. I reasoned that if my religious beliefs were actually true, they should hold up to scrutiny.
I was reading a copy of William Jamesâ Varieties of Religious Experience, and he spoke about a catholic ladyâs conversion experience. She described her baptism using a lot of the same imagery and words that I did; it appears she had the same experience. She felt it was God telling her the Catholicism was the true faith.
Kinda left me in a pickle, because I knew I had no actual reason to assume that she was mistaken about her experience, while it was actually God talking to me.
âBut I felt the Holy Spirit!â
Well, sheâs certain that she did as well.
At least one of us, in my mind, had to be wrong, God would by lying otherwise. Thatâs what did it, the realization that despite how powerful and remarkable my conversion experience was, I didnât actually KNOW it was God talking to me and not her, I was just assuming because I had a novel and powerful personal experience and I wanted it to be true. Thatâs why the missionaries say you need to have faith before God will fulfil Moroniâs promise, because faith is really a desire for it to be true.Â
Transcendent human spiritual experiences are actually present in many different faith practices. Thereâs really no reason to assume itâs God talking to you, rather than simply your own subjective feelings.
So yeah, after 7 years of utter devotion and unquestioning faith, it all came tumbling down. I didnât even care about questioning church doctrines or Joe Smith being a con man or anything else: once you KNOW YOU DONâT KNOW, and nobody in the church actually knows either, youâre free to disregard the whole lot. Thatâs why testimony is regarded as the foundation of mormon faith. You take that as de-facto proof that âGod says the church is true, therefore you can never doubt the church leaders.â Then youâre STUCK. Thatâs why they always come back to testimony, testimony, testimony, over and over and over and over⌠Hereâs a really well-written article about this exact subject. Where do we go from here?
