in a world where visibility is often met with disdain and religion is more widely accepted, and expected, jackie's mindset of being gay is constantly at war with itself. while objectively she has no problem with anyone being gay, absolutely believes that it doesn't matter, she has a much harder time accepting this within herself. her childhood was like many of the time; sundays were spent in church, wednesday nights were for her local youth group. it wasn't until her freshman year of high school that she started to rebel against this routine and refuse to go quite so often. while her parents were not approving of this choice, it was much harder to force the issue with every passing year, and they eventually gave up dragging her along and switched to guilting tactics. and, most of the time, this was easy for jackie to ignore. this did not mean that jackie was spared from the indoctrinations and manipulations of the church. at a much-too-young age, she was baptized. it is only later in life that she recognizes that choice to be fear based. it was impossible to sit through lectures on sin and hell and damnation without internalizing the paralyzing horror of what it might mean to do "wrong" in the eyes of capital-g god. this fear of her own sins was most present as she began to recognize attraction, and especially when she realized that attraction was not to men. it seemed to matter little that she had no interest in the church or their ways; once the seed had been planted, it sprouted fully and encompassed her in an absolute terror that her burgeoning feelings for the same gender could, in any world, damn her for eternity. it takes many, many years of therapy and learning self-acceptance for jackie to unravel and rework her mind in regards to her sexuality. she forces herself into heteronormative relationships as soon as she starts dating, and this follows her well into college — where her therapy was entirely focused on the wilderness. it isn't until she's nearing the end of law school, several failed relationships with men deep and almost entirely certain she just isn't capable of loving someone, that jackie and her therapist first touch the topic of sexuality and, subsequently, religion.
