What would you do to ensure justice? You know full well I don’t speak of lofty ideals and courts and magistrates, dearest. What would you do to those that hurt you? If I dropped them in your lap, what would you do? What kind of pain could you possibly inflict upon them? You are right to do so. You are right to want to do so. Ignore the screaming, dearest, you are the hand of justice now, and they hurt you. Do not look too closely at their faces, dearest. You are within your rights. You spell out your own rights, now. Are you happy about it? Are you certain that this is the right person you hold by the hair? Does your anger hurt less now?

when you tend to someone's wounds

When the person is in need of a person and you're there. when your partner in crime is terribly wounded, you're there, and you're saying "I'm going to take care of you." When you help clean their room when they're too emotionally distraught to do it themselves, the moment you see them in need and take it upon yourself to see to their needs and help them how you can. It's been said that the first sign of humanity was a skeleton with a healed femur, how someone saw someone else hurt and cared for them, fed them, looked after them, for a very long time. When you see your friend hurt and you want them to feel better but it goes beyond that: you want to make them better, and you want them to know you want to get through this, together.

izuru kamukura (??)

for too many months… no, too many years, chiaki had been waiting for something to give. joining the fourteenth division of the future foundation & working alongside her former underclassmen has saved her otherwise fleeting sanity. having seen what she had seen in the years prior, it’s something of a miracle that she never underwent the same fate that the rest of her classmates had.

speaking of her classmates… what she watched them go through while monitoring the neo world program changed her more than the years of tragedy. the hope that she & the others in the future foundation had put into this program was all but shattered, despite the faith she had in her old friends.

there’s something morbid to be said about watching yourself die after having almost died once already. it’s an experience chiaki never thought she would go through, until she did. though she was not in the neo world program herself, her avatar a mere AI, she had been observing the events going on. when it finally came to an end, & those outside the program were able to stop the junko AI, chiaki nearly collapsed from relief. since then, she’d been sitting by the side of one pod in particular. the person inside was closest to her before all of this had happened, and she wanted their safety and sanity above all else.

once she got word that it was safe to open up, she didn’t wait any longer than necessary. the top of the pod rose so painfully slowly, chiaki could feel her anxiety spiking. upon seeing hajime — no, izuru..? — she can’t stop tears from welling up behind her eyes. 

he’s okay. he survived & he’s okay.

their voice hits her ears with a kind of apprehension she wasn’t expecting, & she quickly tries to come up with a response of her own.

“ hi… ” she begins to piece together a sentence, not wanting to ask too much too soon while also wanting to know everything.

chiaki’s eyebrows knit together, concern & hard-to-hide affection combining in her expression. “ how’re you feeling? ”

The tears do not go unnoticed. Neither does the way her breath catches, neither does the processing they can see behind her eyes of what could possibly be happening. How is she to understand this?

Izuru does not have an answer.

But Chiaki has a question, they ask with a visible concern and an obvious fondness in their face.

How is he feeling?

There are a plethora of answers, a never ending scroll that will not cease its unfurling of possible replies to give. It makes Hajime’s head hurt. Izuru is used to it.

Confused. Unaffected. Unfazed. Concerned. Tired. Free. 

Alive.

Just to name a few.

“Fine,” is all he says in reply, “And you?” She’s both easy and impossible to read. They obviously look concerned, but he can’t read what lies underneath, which is something he’s unused to when it comes to her.

Chiaki and Hajime used to be incredibly close, that much Izuru knows, and it still is an understatement. Vague memories of knuckles brushing against each other, innocent kisses exchanged, tucking hair behind an ear, a soft blush and a softer smile. 

Chiaki was everything to him.

But to Izuru, she is barely more than a stranger. They had ran into each other several times during the tragedy, where she tried to reason with him, tried to bring them onto her side of an endless hope. In the end, he always got away, and she always let him.
