Designers in Residence Hefin Jones
The Design Museum is currently showing the Designers in Residence exhibition where 4 Designers responded to the theme of Migration, amongst which was Hefin Jones who showcased Cosmic Colliery. With collaboration and engagement of community at the heart of the project Hefin proposed to rejuvenate an abandoned coal mine by transforming it into an astronaut training centre. This was purely fictional however but the aim was a social aim to evoke hope and new possibilities for local trades. The project was a follow on from the Welsh Space Project which also explored the possibility of local trades contributing to the production of space equipment. These are social projects looking at the social implications of deindustrialisation, the approach is to spark the creative potential in sometimes unrecognised skills of local communities. I see parallels between this welsh town and ketterings in terms of the industrialisation, I think these projects worked and brought communities together in a collective voice.
