What Kurt Cobain said, was the concept of grunge, to call the youth to break their chains that society put on them. Grunge started in 80-90’s with Green River , Mud Honey and Soundgarden. Those groups they were annoyed with Glam music, people called them  ‘’the anti-rockstars’’ because they had a different fashion style (Ripped jeans, like punk music) and they also had that attitude of punk, anti-systemic . But this music started in underground, they weren’t that famous. That was the essence that grunge had in that time. Meanwhile in Seattle there was another band called Nirvana, Nirvana is also known as the most famous and most important (with pearl jam) grunge band. Nirvana was different, they had a great artist that was Kurt Cobain, The passion that he had was the soul of grunge. We can define grunge as Kurt Cobain attitude, that anger that he had inside of him. Pearl jam was also important for grunge, Eddie Vedder had a similar attitude of Kurt’s. The big difference between Nirvana and Pearl Jam was that Pearl Jam was more melodic than Nirvana, but they shared the same ideals. The culture of grunge thought that society corrupted the youth and the grunge bands wrote songs about that problem. In 1991 we had some of one of the most important LP’s from Pearl Jam and Nirvana (Ten and Nevermind), and because of this two LP’s. We had new bands too like bush and silverchair. It’s important to mention that grunge became mainstream too, so the grunge attitude started to disappear because people just listened to grunge, and didn’t understand what grunge was about. But grunge music was about to end. In 1994 Kurt Cobain committed suicide, this was a big shock for any grunge fan and for grunge bands too. We can say that grunge ended that same year, a lot of bands didn’t wanted to continue with the grunge ‘’image’’ . In 1996 many grunge bands disappeared like Soundgarden, Alice in chains and many more, but there still is one band that has that grunge image (Pearl Jam) . But the impact that grunge did for the 90 society won’t be forgotten. Those bands were the voice from the youth from the 90. It’s an end of an era indeed

Reggae is a genre started in Jamaica in the 60's. Is related with earlier Jamaican genres like ska, mento, rocksteady and calipso. this genere has three sub genres: Skinhead Reggae, roots reggae and dancehall. Even though also reggae is the product of the combination of African and American rhythms.

the term Reggae is an abridgement of ragamuffin, which means literally ragged. This tag is used to name the poor people of Jamaica, moreover rastas and cultural movements of poor neighborhood. there source indicate that the term comes from a reggae song of Maytals named "Do the reggay", which the word "reggay" means "regular", this means deeply, ordinary people.

How we said before, Reggae started in 1960 in the Caribbean island of Jamaica. There reggae was distributed by a record company named Island Records which was transferred to the UK in 1962, where continued advertising reggae until 1974.

in 1972 the film the harder they come, generated an important interest and popularity for United States, and the version of Erick Clapton's cover of Bob Marley's song "I shot the sheriff" helped bring the reggae to mainstream and radio stations in the world, where took an important space. This period was named "The golden age of Reggae".

When we talk about electronic music always we related with Dj's, but this is wrong, because electronic music means in general, all the music performed with electronic systems. This concept includes too, the music created with recording tape, electronic music in live (created with synthesizer and other electronic equipments).

According to the concept that i said, electronic music is ancient because the first musical equipment controlled by electricity was created in 1863 by the physician and physicist Hermann Von Helmholtz. This creation was innovative because people in those years were able to heard music without musicians and instruments in live. and after that, electronic music was transformed in science because a great majority of scientist or physicist specially, studied this as methods to control the composition and interpretation of the music.

in the 60's the philosophy of electronic music changed and the people who had the power is segregated teenagers. People who thought that not have dealings with society in general, for that began to sprout musical styles and sounds that had never been heard.

in the en of 80's electronic music became in a movement because it reached the pinnacle moment. People made holidays with this kind of music mixed with drugs (ecstasy, acid and others hallucinogen drugs) and alcohol with the objective to pass a great moment.

In 90's this genre conquered almost all the word. countries around the world incorporated some new elements, depending the zone.

And now electronic music is consolidated growth, having millions of followers how enjoy with this sounds made for dj's specially.

Hip hop is an artistic movement that emerged in the United States at the end of the 60's in Afro-Americans ghettos of New York neighborhoods such as Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn, where from the beginning demonstrations they stressed characteristics of the origins of hip hop

The Hip-Hop as music emerged in the late '60s, when street parties or "block parties" became common in the city of New York, especially in the Bronx. Because the discotheques and clubs were not as accessible for this type of people, which initially functioned as a form of self-expression that could reflect, announce an alternative to try to challenge or simply evoke the ambience of the facts concerning such environment

In the 70's hip hop started to be used to report, usually political acts, they were getting rejection or enmity as government entities. It was said that popularize the culture of hip hop and market it was a way to bring it to the masses and so can hide their true function: basic denunciations to the system. Where for example began to expand the idea of ​​manifest by means of graffiti (one of the roots of hip-hop)

Hip-Hop influence in our society. -Fashion: Style and fashion have always been at the heart of the hip-hop culture. The break dancers (or B-boys) inspired by the hip-hop wore clothes that were functional to dance like baggy pants or tracksuits. Loose jeans, tracksuits, big jewelry and shoes are iconic items of clothing that have been absorbed into mainstream fashion.

-Language: The lexicon of hip-hop has infiltrated the dominant culture. Words like "phat" (great), "hood" (neighborhood) and "chill" (relaxation) have entered everyday language. The language of hip-hop, or more especially his rap subgenre, is also controversial. As Cooper says, punk rock is the characteristic emblem of anarchy and revolution, music for social rebels and people tired of governments, usually England.

Source: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478209/quotes) To get why heavy metal is so important for so many people, we have to dig up all the heavy metal history, but before we start with the ‘’Golden years of heavy metal’’, let’s talk about from where it comes.

Heavy metal started in Britain with all the boom of rock and roll music. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and cream, had a different style from the ‘’Normal’’ rock and roll bands, They were faster, They had more power in the guitars, Their lead singer was more powerful than usual rock and roll singer, Drums and bass were a lot more used, having more solos and more opportunities to shine. Then some strange kids from England wanted to go more further than the bands that I talked about, and those kids created a band called Black Sabbath, which is always referred as the ‘’Grandfather of heavy metal’’. And from there and on we had great bands in the 70-80’s. The lyrics on heavy metal of  Black Sabbath were about strange things, we have like an example the song Paranoid (From Black Sabbath), Children of the Grave (From Black Sabbath) Those songs were more harder and it wasn’t about love anymore (There’re some exceptions, but mainly heavy metal doesn’t focus in love like in rock and roll). And of course, society wasn’t prepared for this new kind of music, because it was very noisy and it talks about like religious things, and it criticizes society. You may ask why? Because back then, people lost the hippie concept, and it became a style, it wasn’t about peace anymore, it was about ‘’following the masses’’. So many artists of heavy metal music were annoyed with hippie things, That’s why we see more violent themes in heavy metal. The black leather jacket and blue skinny jeans is a must have if you like heavy metal music, and that fashion was created by Judas Priest. The band Judas Priest liked to dress like that to have an identity, because as you know, heavy metal goes beyond of only being a style of music, it’s a life style. It’s important to mention, the new wave of British heavy metal in the 70-80’s decade and it’s one of the most important things in today’s heavy metal. It gave metal the identity that it has today, Bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Rainbow, Motorhead, to say just a few of the most important. This new wave, was faster than the old one. And many of this bands (Mostly Iron Maiden) Talked about their own experiences in life (A good example is ‘’Prowler’’ from Iron Maiden). Try to compare Black Sabbath first album to Iron Maiden first album, you will see that there is a difference in speed. The 80-90’s was a great decade for heavy metal … But it also is one of the worst decades of heavy metal. Heavy metal became mainstream too, thanks to bands like Kiss, Twister Sister,Poision,Scorpions, Those bands called themselves ‘’Heavy metal’’ But they didn’t do anything heavy, they were more about dressing like woman, living the lifestyle of a ‘’Rock star’’, as you can imagine, the same thing happened with rock and roll. But there were some annoyed kids in New York, that they said that bands like kiss were only about making money, and they didn’t care about the heavy metal culture. Many of those kids made their own bands (Metallica,Megadeth,Slayer,Anthrax, Annihilator) Maybe you know about this bands, because many of them still holds up on today’s society. But those bands made a new ‘’Style’’ of heavy metal, called Thrash metal (Not trash, as many think). And this style is one of the most controversial in heavy metal (If heavy metal weren’t controversial enough). The thrash metal style, talks more about injustice, social awareness, some satanic themes too (We can say that death metal took off from here). And as many of you imagined, thrash metal was faster, stronger than the new wave of British heavy metal. We can see a that that new heavy metal bands want to go further than the older ones. Sadly, in the 90’s metal became mainstream again (But many old bands had great records, like Judas Priest’s Painkiller). And (In my personal opinion) since then there hasn’t been a good metal band, like the old ones except for one band called Pantera. That particular band brought back heavy metal, I really recommend that you check the band Pantera out.

Rock and roll started in the 1920 it became popular with Elvis in the 50-60’s and there is no denial with that statement. But why I'm starting with that?. Because there is a lot of artists that made rock and roll what is today, artists like Chuck Berry, Little Richard’s or Pat Boone, who made Afro-American music famous among white people back then.

But from where does rock and roll come from?. Rock and roll comes from blues and jazz, a little happier and more romantic, Because, as we know, blues music is very depressing.

But that fast style of the rock and roll, from where it comes? It comes from country music, so we can say that rock and roll is a mix between country music and from blues and jazz.

Blues and jazz started to get popular in the 40-50’s and rock and roll became popular too, but rock and roll wasn’t only about music there is also dancing. It’s very important in this decade because many dances of today take rock and roll as a reference. Rock and roll music is a danceable music, with a lot of fast movement, it’s like feeling the music in your body!.

Then in the 50-60’s Elvis took the stage, Everybody wanted to be like Elvis Presley, Even some of the  young boys of Liverpool, who after became one of the most important bands in music history (The Beatles). Back then, being a ‘’Teddy boy’’ (Black leather, Elvis haircut, and most important, JEANS, sounds familiar, doesn’t it?) was the most popular thing back then, But it was a taboo. People used to say back then ‘’Society is declining’’, because the kids who listened that kind of music only wanted to get chicks and only wanted to get drunk. It’s so sad that they were so WRONG about it, Rock and roll  was more as a culture of people getting out of the WWII and trying to be happy again, being ‘’Free’’. In the 60 to the late 70’s, we had GREAT rock and roll bands like The doors, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Who and a lot more (If I write about all of them, I will keep writing all day, but why you don’t tell me of your favorite rock and roll in the comments?) But now… It wasn’t about just rock and roll, Those groups in particular, went to another level trying to do new music, less speed, more technical, more soul to rock music. They started to talk about peace questioning themselves what’s wrong with the world in those years.

Blues and jazz are from southern U.S., these musical styles are owned by black people and has an African descent influenced by tribal songs and the songs of the slave and working people combined with some gospel music.

This music was a key to the life of workers and slaves point since used these melodies to create a good environment within the hell they lived as workers, jazz over time was use as music festivals and a good reputation is earned, while the blues was always a kind of depressing music with very dark songs used by rural people.

As well as jazz is used as the main instrument the saxophone, the blues is the electric guitar, these two are opposites as in jazz or preferably a cheerful carnival as sometimes relaxed sound is concerned, on the other hand, the blues is totally rude, make notes characterize the typical bar scene in old movies. A depressive and quiet atmosphere makes the blues to honor its name.

After this, these musical genres became cult music in the United States which allowed that became popular and make people started to fear the blues even started calling him "the devil's music" while interpreters began to introduce the music to schools and mixing types of art such as paintings and dances such as lifestyle of blues and jazz.

The Jazz and Blues music were feared because they became stronger, and in the period of "wars" began to accuse them of inciting violence, this music also began to become popular among white people.

This event began to make expanding the legacy of blues and make racial genres were relaxed.

Thanks to blues and jazz music of all styles emerged ramifications of music today such as reggae, rock n roll, metal music, punk rock to electronic music.

Today in North America blues and jazz as a national heritage and used these rhythms are taught to children in schools in music classes and jazz competitions are made along the entire USA.

Muddy Waters is one of the pioneers of blues music in the 50s, this person is considered a blues teacher, since most of the bluesmen musicians follow the rhythm of Waters.

The classical music is solely for the art music composed in the classical period, the mid-eighteenth to the early nineteenth century. The term "classical music" has also been extended to serious music composed in the Middle Ages and the present. Generally called "classic", but those who know say that the name should be reserved for such music, but only to the one made in a given time, which is known as the classical music period, that period where Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven were highlighted.

By having a general idea is how we start a new article about history of music and its evolution as well. Speaking of which, we will have a huge step from Mesopotamic Era to the mid-eighteenth and the early nineteenth century as I said before. 

What I want to talk about is the one composer and pianist I consider 'The Father' between Classical and Romatic eras (even if his inspiration was Mozart), also whose most known compositions were made at the time when he was almost completely deaf. Yes, I am talking about Ludwig van Beethoven.

Beethoven showed disdain and was against authority as much as social rank. He also was attracted by Enlightenment ideals of the era. An example of this could be when Napoleon Bonaparte's ambitions became as clear as water, Beethoven erased Bonaparte's name so hard he made a hole on the paper and re-named his symphony as "Heroic Symphony, composed to celebrate the memory of a great man", which was dedicated to his patron. 

His works were divided into three parts (Early, Middle and Lates). The first part was strongly influenciated by his predecesors Mozart and Haydn (as you can see in his first and second symphony), but then he started to explore and change at the Middle where he 'explodes' all his talent out and made a lot of sonatas, compositions in piano (Moonlight Sonata) and violin, complete concertos, etc. And in 1815, we can appreciate Beethoven's late era with String Quartet, Ninht Symphony, Missa Solemnis, etc. 

As a social awareness on that time, I could take the last part of Symphony no. 9 in Di Minor and talk about the falling Berlin's wall that divided the country in two.

The end of the WWI and the division between different politic partidaries were placed with that Symphony and, nowadays, it is still alive at schools as you can see in Music classes in pimary. 

Nowadays, it can be also seen as a reminder of where we came from and why we are still here. There is still a lot of agroupations that cover this almost forgotten kind of music, just like ThePianoGuys on YouTube.

These people shared music as a language and a way to distinguish from one tribe from another.

This video is an example of a piece they made in their era. Centuries after, this kind of music was involved with religious chorus and similar stuff to transmite the message of God and touched people’s hearts with God’s will. 

I recently read an article about different cultures in the Mesopotamic Era, more especifically talking about the Sumerian one. At first, I was surprised to know the Sumerian culture was almost always the first ones to discover a lot of things that nowadays are pretty important to our society. 

The most important discover I am interested to talk about is how music got involved into a whole civilization development and how could it be possible that this "little detail" can make a kind of revolution on that time.

Music Instruments discovered in burial sites and art include the Lyre, clappers and later even drums and wind instruments. Specifically, reed pipes, vertical flutes, lyres, harps, kitharas, drums, clappers, sistrum made for a wide array of instruments. Another interesting discovery appears to be notation. A numeric system found on many hymnal texts seems to be a form of notation.

Sumerians seems to place music roots in temples 'cause songs were usually devotionals to their goddess Innanna, also musicians must purify their hands before playing stringed instruments such as the Lyre.

This kind of religious role into Sumerian society was also applicated in their daily lifes and adopted by posterior civilizations, that is how we can know nowadays has also this kind of little detail in our daily life and not often notice it. 

Actually, music has an important role in our lifes. As I said before, music can be seen in churches as in chorus, in our national hymn representing every existing country. Music is in everywhere in different types and sizes, it is only neccessary to hear around yourselves how music was looked as a revolutionary icon by someone in a certain era just like we see it now as a way to see ourselves.

Behind a new creation or discovering there is always a reason. It can be for supply a human neccessity and also it can be just for fun. The first reason it is the one we want to talk about. How music had an impact in our society, what is it suppose to be for us? The answer is: a new language. We need to forget the word ‘music’ as a common noun only, we have to keep it in mind as a concept. Music is a language we can learn since we born, we can learn it in our environment and we can use it as well as we do with our natural language (in our case, Spanish).
