Rui, in his humanoid form, sits beside Emu on the beach, both of them silently watching the sun slowly set. Eventually Rui speaks up. “Emu… Are you really going to leave for the frontlines tomorrow?”

Emu nods slowly. “I’m sorry, Rui-kun…but I need to fight to keep everyone safe.”

After a while, Rui reaches for her hand, clasping it in his own hand and rubbing it gently with his thumb. “…You’ll come back, right? You’ll…you’ll win. And you’ll come back to the beach at sunset and we can be together every day again.”

They’re not naive children; they both know Emu’s chances of returning home alive are slim. But…looking at the tears in Rui’s eyes that glitter like the stars so high above them…

“Mhm, we’ll win the war and I’ll come back home to my pretty mer-friend☆” she says, putting on her signature smile.

It’s been years since Emu had to leave to defend her kingdom, and finally the war is over. Yet Rui has no way of knowing if Emu will ever return.

Today, he visits the beach, as he has done every day since he met that cheerful human for the first time.

Sitting on the beach in his humanoid form, he watches the sky darken. He waits there until the sun sets fully and his body aches from staying still for so long, and then he waits some more.

Hours pass before he finally stands up, stretching, and he walks into the water once more, ready to go back to his underwater home.

“Rui-kun!! Wait for me…hah…”

Rui turns around slowly, not daring to believe what he’s hearing, yet hoping it’s really who he thinks it is.

A woman with pink hair in a bob jogs towards him. She looks a little older and has a slight limp in her step, but it’s undeniably…

“Emu-kun…!”
