⋆ ˚ ꩜ 。 open starter ⋮ ( 0 / 5 ) – 7-eleven , around 8pm
☺ ☺ ☺ “ there's a science to it, ” he explained sagely, the ridiculous and intense look on his face borderline laughable in this situation. “ i'm tellin' you, ” he insisted, demonstrating how to get the perfect swirl in the domed lid of the slushie. “ you gotta press lightly or it'll fill too fast and you'll get ice ‘n syrup all over the place. ” he slowly put pressure on the dispenser — a feat that would surely feel like a waste of time if you were to follow his instructions every time you stopped at 7-eleven. “ first the blue .. then the red.. and the blue again.. ” he moved the cup from one flavor to the other and back as he spoke, the double gulp cup filling in colorful layers as he worked. “ and then the big finish ! ” carefully pushing the ‘ pour ’ button, bright red cherry slush swirled around the inside of the lid, ending in the cutest little dollop at the top as he released. “ and that is how you get the perfect slushie. looks like the fourth o’ july in there ! ”
it was just what she needed — having slushie making mansplained on one of the rare occasions she was off duty. lucky for her, ivelisse’s colleagues understood that, of them all, she was the one that knew cars the most, but that did not always translate to her customers. great, burly football fans thinking they knew why their own engines had met a grisly end when they were on the wrong end of the wrench. “oh, perfect. i totally needed your help.” words were dry, and yet her eyes were alive. ive clapped her hands together and jutted out her lower lip. “and please, oh great and mighty oracle, would you let me have a try ? pssh, come on, loren … ” in spite of her sarcasm, the entire situation was born from amusement ; they were both lifers, two souls born and forever tethered to the groundhog day that willow glen could so often become. “let’s get me slushie’d up and head out of here. i think all the ice is getting to our heads.”

stellan was scheduled for a break the next day, a rare slither of time without a class to teach, and so — as an end of week treat — he found himself at the hideaway looking for something strong. his drinking was often exclusive to nights in with his wife, after a fancy home - cooked meal and with a foreign film on in the background. that night, though, he needed the company of a stranger, a voice of reason — or maybe a devil on his shoulder — to help him through the fog in his mind. “it still feels like she’s three years old,” he spoke to no one in particular, “she’s my baby girl. she always has been. now she doesn’t live with us, she doesn’t text or call as much as she used to, and she’s off with a boy … and i know, i know i’m being unreasonable,” he took a drink from his glass of whiskey, “like a bitter old man. but having an empty nest … it’s not for the fainthearted.”
there's a leaf stuck in her hair when she pops out of the bush, hands dusting away dirt and pushing her hair from her face. " didn't mean to come out of the bush like that, sorry. i've been struggling for the last fifteen minutes. " a pretty, slightly chatty petite maine coon is hidden somewhere and jina is determined to get her. " you're a life saver ! " she shifts, careful to not jostle the bush too much. " my arms aren't long enough to reach where she is. i keep getting poked in the face with branches. "
“no bother,” he waved a nonchalant hand, as if wrangling lost cats was just a part of his day - to - day and that strangers leaping out of the undergrowth was a normal part of his morning walks. slate - blue eyes softened at the sight of the mewling moggy, and with both hands upon his knees stellan lowered with a grunt that showed his age. “that’s no good. my face is already weathered. it won’t matter if get poked and prodded by a twig or two. let me see — ” no doubt he would ache in the morning, would look up at his wife with a jutting lower lip and ask ever so nicely for a massage to reward him for such a good deed. another old man noise escaped him as he reached the ground and stretched out one, markedly longer arm. “ aaaaand … gotcha ! ” stellan caught the cat in a strong hold, brought it mewling from the darkness. “is it hurt ? a stray ? ”
maybe by appearances alone most people wouldn't think of callie langford as the bookish type. yet as she'd gone through the motions of becoming an attorney she wrote an international bestseller. little more than 2 million copies sold world wide, high critic praise, but then her second book didn't do quite as well. perhaps that was why she roamed the stacks of old fox books, other than looking for her next read, as if by osmosis or something all the words in the store would inspire some magic where she was facing a creative drought.
just as she was pushing a poetry book back into it's slot on the shelf a towering presence shadowed her and the soft, cautious words snagged her attention. it was the accent that clicked for her at first, then looking up and seeing the now older face of her hot high school english teacher was reason for the smirk that hooked her mouth. "i would certainly hope so." there was something teasing in her voice as she turned to face hallström, her arm propped on the shelf. "hopefully it's not because i'm a langford or you're friends with my dad..." as much as she loved the guy, the blonde rolled her eyes. "maybe it's because i'm one of your success stories, or maybe you realize you can ask me out now that i'm in my thirties." the mischief in her blue gaze would likely be familiar to her former teacher as well.
stellan chuckled, shaking his head. when he returned home and told esti of his reunion with callie langford she would ache, once again, over him remembering to bring his glasses out on his excursions. in his fiftieth year, he was still of the belief that he only needed them for reading. surely he hadn’t let himself go that much already. raising his left hand, displaying it with his palm faced towards him, he countered ; “ah, well, i’m married, remember ? and i have been married for most of your life … very happily, in fact. i’m afraid you missed the boat on that one.”
although stellan himself didn’t think he was anything special, there had been a number of students throughout the years who lingered a little too long. parents, too, whenever it was parent teacher evening — a mobile number tucked beneath his file, a single mother laughing too much and tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. he chalked it up to proximity bias, like those that found doctors sexy simply because they wore a white coat and were obligated to run their hands all over you. “how are you ? have you been well ? i swear, i can’t walk two minutes in this place without running into one of my success stories, as you say.” his hand swept towards her, eyes crinkling in the corners from a smile.

› FEATURING : stellan & june ( @trustmylove )
it was a peaceful place to work when his own study grew stale. one of the comfortable little reading chairs in the back corner of old fox books was stellan's office for the afternoon, tapping slowly on the laptop that he had never quite learned how to properly use to get ahead on his marking backlog. it blew his mind listening to his daughter type sometimes, her fingers dancing across the keys at rocket speed, when he needed to squint to properly discern which keys corresponded to which letters. it made writing up his gradings all the more difficult. “excuse me,” he offered a kind smile to an other, raising his hand as though asking for the cheque in a restaurant. maybe esti was right about him needing glasses. “can you just … this might sound ridiculous … is this an S or a Z ? ”
there were students in every year group that shone. those that were going to make it big, that were going to be successful, that would leave high school and continue on steady upwards trajectories. stellan — or mr hallström, as his students knew him — could see it near immediately, that sparkle in the eyes of a teenager, that thirst for knowledge that seemed all too rare those days. nearly two decades ago, he had seen it all in summer boone. many a lunch break had been shared in his english classroom, summer at the back with her open books and stellan catching up on admin work. perhaps the odd treat here and there, stowed away in the bottom drawer of his filing cabinet, reserved only for the students that treated him as though he was a human being. as they sat beside one another at the café he could almost feel the girl’s urge to refer to him as his previous moniker. stellan smiled, interrupted the thought before it could emerge. “you know, you could have stopped calling me mr hallström when you graduated,” he chuckled, “i think we’ve known each other long enough.”
if esti had her way , the house would be wall to wall with mementos , knickknacks and everything she's ever possessed . she couldn't always part with items - those were memories . what if one day she ended up with amnesia and couldn't remember the summer that their daughter refused to wear anything but a pink , fuzzy bathrobe adorned in unicorns , or the teddy she couldn't bare to sleep with out when she was only three if they were no longer tucked away in a box ?? but she tries , at least , to be respectful of her husband's minimalism . keeping only to hoarding in a small section of their attic .
" do you think calla would want this still ?? i'd hate to sell it and then she -- " she's studying an old hamster cage when stellan leans to dust her free of cob webs . " -- pardon ?? multiple ... bugs ?? in my hair ?? please , love , evict them . "
the home was like a second child, the hallström they never had — a mix of light, clean woods, clear surfaces, and gatherings of little ceramic oddities that esti had collected throughout the years. the fridge had a neat collection of magnets from their travels, and after long discussion he had waved his white flag and allowed a gallery wall. now their home was a museum of everything they had loved with just a dash of swedish restraint … if only it wasn’t so quiet. most of their old things were up in the attic, tucked away, and they had brought a cloud of dust down the stepladder alongside them. “her hamster cage ? oh god, remember that thing. looking back, we should have vetoed doctor nibbles as a name.” stellan was 90% sure that rodent had never completed a phd.
he tutted softly, clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth. fingers curled around the strings of web and pulled them free, before stellan held out his hand to show esti the damage. “it’s a party up in there, mitt hjärta. is there room for an old man ? ”
“and then i saw that they'd planted their hydrangeas in clay soil. i mean, there's no way the roots are going to breathe in those conditions. that's a one - way ticket to tired, diluted flowers. it doesn't matter how much you fertilize them.” stellan sometimes wondered whether it was what conrad had in mind when rallying for mayor of the town. perhaps he had wished for something greater ; instead their evening was being spent together at his friend's home, tipsy and highly strung over a lack of loam and nutrients. but old men needed to stick together, and sticking together was they were good at — when their knees started to ache and their backs started to go, it was friendship they would all lean on in the end. “anyway,” he cleared his throat with a cough, as though his previous tirade had just been a strange gust of wind, “what's new with you ? ”

the days were as long as they were rewarding. stellan deserved a break. back to back lessons on the works of steinbeck had been fascinating, titillating, borderline explosive at times, and yet he felt the years catching up with him — an exhaustion settling deep into his bones. black coffee awaited, although a plate of homemade cookies from mrs webster in the math department stared at him with shimmering chocolate - chip eyes. just when he was toying over whether a shot of insulin was worth the passing joy, he turned to hear the squeaking of the breakroom door ( long overdue an oiling ). “it happens every year,” he began, as though speaking to an old friend, “we pick up of mice & men and there will be scribbles in the margins giving the entire plot away. kids today, eh ? ” a chuckle. stellan lifted his cup, relaxed into the poky plastic chair, “any nightmares yet, or are you just starting ? ”

› FEATURING : stellan & helena ( @facvde )
life was moving quickly, and yet stellan didn’t feel a day over thirty five. those around him would grow up and mature — students graduating, going to college, carving careers for themselves — and yet he didn’t feel different at all. the reflection told otherwise ; his sandy blonde hair slowly turning grey and the crows - feet wrinkles in the corners of his eyes. offloading a few things for an evening meal into the basket ( tomatoes on the vine, fresh pasta, a good glass of white wine ) was when he spotted her. helena, a girl he had taught briefly yet had never forgotten, one that he had made extra effort to include when the unfamiliar world seemed so big and scary. he knew how it had felt, to be the new and strange student in an established cohort. although decades had passed since it was stellan walking those corridors alone and, he supposed, a good few years since helena’s time, too. “fancy seeing you here,” an entertained hum, “you know, i never envisioned us reuniting in the dairy aisle.”
he had never felt older. staring at all sorts of brightly colored boxes, of trinkets and charms and doohickeys, stellan wondered at what age the world had left him behind. none of it truly made sense, but that did not matter so long as the haul at the end of it brought a smile to his daughter’s face. calla had been gone … well, she had moved out a few years before and, still, the wound was fresh like it had happened yesterday. maybe buying her all sorts of shiny things was his way of ensuring his daughter wouldn’t forget her old man any time soon. “hey, sorry — ” despite thirty years in willow glen, his accent was thick ; lilting in its cadence and staccato in its rhythm. “i’m looking for something for my daughter. she’s about your age. what … ” shoulders shrugged in defeat, and stellan breathed a laugh of total disbelief, “ … what does all of this mean ? ”

if asked, stellan's wife would have told anyone in passing that her husband had read every book in the world. in reality it wasn't quite true, although compared to the average passerby he had many a title beneath his belt — long and winding epics, poetry anthologies, explosive debuts ... it was why callie's face seemed so familiar, as he took a double take across the bookstore. he supposed, for an author, a store such as old fox books brought the same level of dread as the high school on a saturday ; the lingering and ever-present threat that a fan ( or student ) might shriek across the room searching for a reaction. voice low, an unfamiliar cadence despite his three decades in the states, he approached the younger woman as though a skittish animal. “excuse me,” he began, “you look familiar.”

" okay , that's the last of it i think . " a dusty old box , that had been buried in the attic longer than esti would like to admit is settled on the floor , just beside the creaky ladder . a cobweb clings to a tendril of grown out bangs . " i didn't realize i held on to so much stuff . do you think we should have a yard sale ?? "
his wife's compulsion to hang onto every earthly possession was not the scandinavian way. although, as esti had so often reminded him, if he had wanted the scandinavian way he should have married a scandinavian wife. stellan stood against the door jamb, coffee in hand, idly sipping as he watched her ; of course he would have helped lift the box, but his sore back ... “i think a yard sale sounds like a perfect idea. we can make some space, free up our attic.” for more trinkets, no doubt — necklaces made of pasta from the children esti looked after, ‘ best teacher mugs ’ from every end of year celebration ... and all of their daughter's cast - offs that she left behind. “sweetheart,” he chuckled, reaching out to loop the cobweb around one finger, “are you trying to start a bug hotel in your hair ? ”

" wait, hang on ! " jina all but pops up from a random bush, hands stretched out in front of her and likely covered in dirt. " sorry, i didn't mean to scare you. " she dusts her hands over her clothes, dusting away dirt and the twig that stuck to her shirt. " i look kinda silly in this bush, but i need your help. there's a cat in here that is so dang slippery— i've been trying to catch her for the last thirty minutes ! " she frowns. " do you think you could help me ? "
stellan had thought, when their daughter moved into her own place and left the nest empty, whether getting a pet would have been a good idea. something soft and loving, a child without all of the commitment. if him and esti had it their way they would have brought an entire pack of hallström's into the world ; life's ways had stopped them in their tracks and allowed the couple only one. walking back from the school at the end of his shift, listening to the birds twittering above, he slowed at the sight of a young woman emerging like some forest creature. “a cat ? ” a brow raised, yet stellan couldn't help his smile, “what do you need me to do ? ”

was that stellan hallström i just saw over at the nature reserve ? you know, the fifty year old english teacher at willow glen highschool that’s been around willow glen for thirty five years. people around town say they can somehow both be stubborn and warm, but if you were to ask them, they’d probably say they’re more like cable knit sweaters & long winters braved with only a jacket, coffee - ringed paperwork and golden hair slowly tarnishing to silver, as inevitable as patina on copper. the town sure has been rumbling about them lately, apparently they are dealing with a severe case of empty nest syndrome, and wonder if life will ever be the same again . . . but who knows if that’s true, i guess i’ll just have to stop by willow heights and find out !

ii. background
stellan hallström was born from nothing less than fairytale love. it was no surprise, really, when his own life mirrored the success of his parents. his mother had watched with one brow cocked as a stranger came to her flower stall each morning, purchasing bouquets for his mother, his aunt, his nanna, his … dog. it soon became obvious that it was a desperate plea to speak with her. they quickly married, and the news of a new arrival came soon afterwards — stellan came into the world like a burst of light and has illuminated the dark corners in people's lives ever since.
an intelligent and driven young boy, stellan always knew that he wanted to help people. it sounded cliché whenever anyone asked — and family members would talk amongst themselves about how the hallström boy wanted to make the big bucks — but that was never the reason. he wanted to bring his love of literature to all, an almost savant - like quality when it came to wilde or keats or shakespeare. his parents wanted nothing but the best for their only son and so, at thirteen years old, the hallström’s jetted off on their first outing to america. willow glen became home, and they never left.
back when he was still fresh faced and touched with scandinavian blonde, he had walked through those school halls like an outcast. a different accent, a different world view — he held his books to his chest and chose the first vacant seat in english class. at first, esti barnett wondered who that strange boy was. fast forward three decades and they are married with their own darling daughter that arrived not without struggle, but after years of headache and negative tests and false hope. the day stellan first held his daughter in his arms — a weight that was instantly familiar, a sweet face with pink - cheeks and closed eyes, he knew what his purpose had always been. he was a teacher, a husband, an avid hiker, a lover of crossword puzzles but, more than anything, he was a father.
and so, when she moved out only a few years ago, he felt as though a hole had been carved into his chest. even now he still aches to hear the pitter patter of feet from upstairs, the slamming of doors, the whines of ‘ daaad ’ whenever he made a particularly awful joke. stellan had said his goodbyes to countless classes over his years as a highschool teacher and, yet, that goodbye was the most painful … even if she did only live down the street.
he remains at willow glen high school as the subject lead, and still often sees his ex-students now that they are grown and living their lives. evenings are spent cuddled on the couch with his wife watching countless television series, or out in the garden pruning his rose bushes, or wandering out in the wilderness ( despite his aching knees and dodgy hip ). stellan’s days are kept busy, since in the absence there lurks the emptiness and pain of an empty nest. one day the empty house will stop hurting. today is not that day.
iii. connections
✶ ex - students : those he has taught over his years at willow glen high school. if your muse was in high school in the last thirty years, they were likely taught by mr hallström at some point. he was a kind teacher, but a stern one — certainly the type to let the lonely kids use his classroom to eat their lunches in, in exchange for a book recommendation or two. ( open — unlimited slots )
✶ wife : his childhood sweetheart, and the only woman he has ever loved. esti is his everything, his north star and the breath in his lungs. stellan could not imagine a life without her. since his daughter moved out he has been relying ( perhaps a little too much ) on his partner, and has become clingier than a lovesick puppy. ( closed — taken by @wldminds )
✶ daughter : stellan, more than anything, is a father. these two have an extremely close bond, and are always out getting coffee or going on walks together. when she left home to begin her own life his heart shattered in two ; of course he is immensely proud of her achievements, but that doesn't make it sting any less. ( open — listed wc )
✶ more ideas ... : colleagues, hiking buddies, those with a green-thumb, literature buffs, teaching rivals, old friends.
