of course evgenia was first on the pitch, even before wood himself. she had left purposefully early that morning to avoid another talk with her parents about the fact that she supposedly needed more hobbies. and there she was, almost an hour early to an optional training session. well, optional for the rest of the team. as captain, evgenia knew that she had to be there, especially with the look wood had given her when he said the practice would only be optional. sighing, evgenia ran a hand through her hair before deciding to head back to the changing rooms. it was kind of cold that early in the morning, and evgenia knew it wouldn’t do for her to get sick right now. still, she made her way over there slowly, not looking forward to getting to her phone and the messages from her parents. walking in, she stopped in her tracks. there was someone else already there, and she wasn’t sure what to say to her. she never was. “oh. hi,” she said as she walked back towards her own locker. “you’re here early.”

evgenia smiled at the kneazle by their legs, reaching down to pet him with the back of their hand. they were supposed to meet poppy at the café at around one that afternoon, but they had come in advance just to get to spend more time with the creatures. evgenia might not have been all that good with people, but animals? animals they got along great with. the only ones they didn’t like all that much were the toads and slugs, but even then, they weren’t necessarily grossed out by them or anything. finally, they heard the sound of the bell over the door as it announced that someone had come in, and they looked up to see poppy walk in. grinning, evgenia waved at them to indicate where they were sitting. “hey! i think i’ve made a new friend, but i don’t know his name yet.”

“sorry i’m late,” evgenia apologized as she sat down in front of noah, cringing at her own tardiness. “i had quidditch practice this morning, and it ran a bit longer than anticipated. then, i had to deal with something at home before i could come over, and... yeah. i’m sorry.” 

and she really was. evgenia usually wasn’t one to arrive to anything late. in fact, more often than not, she arrived everywhere way too early, and had to wait for others much longer than was necessary. not only did it stress her out not to be the first one to arrive, but she also didn’t like making other people wait. her parents had thought her that punctuality said a lot about a person, and she had taken it to heart.

they had had so much fun the day before. evgenia had laughed like she never had before, so much so that there had been tears in her eyes. she couldn’t remember ever laughing that hard, and she knew it only happened because of june. the other made her feel at ease in aw way no one else had ever managed to, and evgenia could feel herself losing her mind over it. in the best way possible. smiling, she couldn’t help but spot the figure of june in the crowd, clad in black and yellow. her voice could be heard clearly through the rest of the crowd as she was cheering the hufflepuff team on, or perhaps it was only evgenia who heard it so clearly. either way, she was smiling, and she only saw the bludger at the last moment. panicking, she hit it, and cringed as she heard a loud noise. moving towards the noise, her eyes widened as she saw iris falling towards the ground. she had begone to speed over when she saw that other members of the brunette’s team had rushed towards her, and slowed down, her eyes still wide as she observed the scene. this wasn’t right. evgenia knew better than aiming for people’s heads. hadn’t she seen enough of her dad’s friends having to deal with old head injuries? hadn’t she seen enough of what could go wrong? how could she had let herself be so distracted that she didn’t even pay attention to the game. this wasn’t right. this couldn’t be right. quidditch was supposed to be her life, what she loved. someone wasn’t supposed to become more important than it. she wasn’t supposed to love june that much. emotions weren’t supposed to get in the way. they couldn’t get in the way.
