Lucky made a lasting impression on the people in Norval, too, for he was remembered as a bit of a clown. In the summer, Lucky would wait at the back of the church until everyone was seated on a Sunday. Then, he would come in and walk up the centre aisle majestically, with his tail held high, until he reached Maud’s pew. He hopped up beside her, and sat upright and motionless, just like a person, his dignified head showing above the back of the pew (for he was a large cat). He listened with rapt attention while Ewan preached the service. Then he would walk out with the Macdonald family just as if he were a family member. People said that it was worth going to church just to see Lucky’s performance.

Nothing, in any shape form or fashion, to be afraid of. To me, it sounds like the best thing to be shaped by (as I am myself). In this crazy messed up world we need more pure hearts like that little unwanted orphan who refused to see the world as it was but instead chose to make it brighter by sheer will and an indomitable lightness of being.

Thinking about The Blue Castle and that specific genre of literary fiction that's like "it's not fantasy because the magic is all Imaginary and the main character has to give it up and learn to live in the Real World" and how The Blue Castle actually understands the point of imagination. The point of imagination isn't that Valancy wants a castle, it's that Valancy wants a better life for herself, and needs a way to imagine that. I mean, I know this website is full of people who understand the Emotional Support Daydream, but I have read a depressing number of stories (particularly children's books) where the goal is to make the character abandon the daydream so they can improve their real life or as part of "growing up," rather than help the character improve their life so they can have a healthy relationship with their imagination rather than maladaptive daydreams. Because people actually do need to maintain an imagination ecosystem in order to be okay.

Father and Daughter Gay
I think this is probably more what Cissy looked like at the beginning of her sickness. I don't quite know how to draw her as she was at the last.
I'm going to a concert tomorrow night but I'll make sure to schedule a post of Barney and Valancy so as not to leave you dear dear ones in suspense. I will be wracked with nerves to not check my phone to see what you all think of them.

YOU GUYS!!!!! Your lovely and welcome reactions and responses to my little character sketches has made my heart so happy. I put so much thought into them and then just set them aside. THANK YOU!!! I've actually been thinking about slowly going ahead and working on my original project of illustrating the novel. We'll see how it all goes. Even though it would be a "passion project" it still helps out enormously to have people besides yourself looking forward to what you create.

First look at one of the men of The Blue Castle. What an annoying person to have as a relative.
This little side blog of mine was originally created to share with everyone the progress I was making on my version of an illustrated Anne book....then I got depressed and overwhelmed with the enormity of it and...gave up. 🫣😭
HOWEVER, before that (as in 2019), I had actually wanted to do an in depth illustrated graphic novel of sorts of The Blue Castle and went so far as to sketch up some key characters from the book as well as few VERY rough storyboards.
Lo and behold, I couldn't believe when I saw that someone was already creating a webcomic based on the book and hesitated to share because I didn't want to come across as a copycat. BUT there is an absolutely GLORIOUS new fan base that has a whole month dedicated to fan art and fan fic!!!!
With that in mind, I have been encouraged to share a few of my character sketches and I've decided I will start with NON main characters just because...well, I'm a wimp.
