How to obsess over characters

additionally, sometimes they just Do Not make sense! there will be an unspoken and undetermined time jump from one run to another and characters will say things that are not true (retcons are very common)

after "seasons of mist" they appear in the children's crusade link here on the readmorecomics website

then have some various cameos before the 4 issue series "the sandman presents: dead boy detectives"

and then there's some other graphic novels they're in, cutesy manga-y style. they're by jill thompson is you'd like to look them up

and then you have the more modern runs from 2014 and 2023- the 2014 one is the one the show is most based on and the 2023 one is my personal favorite

and there's a few other cameos etc that i've left out, but here's my personal recommendation:

start with "sandman presents" (it's short, fun, and introduces you to this version of the characters nicely)

then read the 2014 run (its longer, but it has crystal and mick in it! most similar to the show, but still very much these different versions of the characters

then read the 2023 run (the most fun imo + the most gay, though the 2014 one is pretty gay too)

then pick other runs and cameos that look interesting- you might even meet different comic characters you'll want to get to know better!

I've noticed that Crystal and Niko can be viewed as parallels of Edwin and Charles, so I thought I'd post some examples in case anyone is interested.

First, there is the way they meet. Edwin and Crystal encounter someone who is in trouble, on the verge of death, and try to help as best they can. They sit with them and listen, bond over shared trauma.

The big difference, of course, is that Charles dies while Niko lives. This is not a criticism of Edwin - he was just one ghost boy fresh from Hell. It’s only by working together that the three of them are able to save Niko (i.e. the power of friendship and this enchanted jar I found).

Charles is immediately taken with Crystal and eventually makes the connection that she reminds him of Edwin. Edwin finds Niko similarly charming. I bet if he thought about it, he would figure out it’s because she reminds him of Charles. They are both stubbornly optimistic and delightfully openminded, if a bit reckless.

They impulsively pick up objects.

They are curious about the bear talisman. (Notice how the shots are different, with Niko visually trapped with it in the jar.)

They really want that Magic 8 Ball and look to Edwin for permission to take the case.

They are much friendlier with Tragic Mick than Edwin or Crystal are, which results in him giving them the magical objects that come in so handy later.

They tend to jump in front of danger when their counterpart is threatened.

And then there is their mutual appreciation for blunt force objects. (That crowbar definitely ended up in the bag of tricks backpack.)

Bonus shot of all four reacting to the young woman jumping from the lighthouse in episode 4. Charles and Niko immediately look away, but Crystal and Edwin watch. Edwin even moves to get a better view. Is this because they are more desensitized to violence?

Lastly, just a dialogue parallel. Edwin in episode 6 after realizing he was tricked by Monty, and Crystal in the pilot explaining that David the Demon must have tricked her.

tomorrow starts netflix geeked week and it’s gonna go on till the the 19th (16-19th) and this makes the perfect opportunity to make geeked week about dead boy detectives and show netflix how much we want this show back, and that means every post that netflix makes (twitter , instagram, youtube etc) we HAVE to be there and be LOUD AND ANNOYING, we did it with the youtube teaser and with the announcement post on ig and twitter and flooded the comments with dbda we can do it again! , it’s gonna be hard work but i know we can do it guys! LETS GET OUR SHOW BACK!

If you need convincing, Dead Boy Detectives was ranked as the #1 Best DC Live Action Show available on Netflix by MovieWeb, and for good reason! The story is incredible, the actors are insanely talented... this story means more to me than I can even put into words. You just have to give it a shot - you seriously won't regret it!!!!

Announced a homophobic version of Dorian Gray where Basil and Dorian were brothers

Canceled a critically acclaimed new show (DBDA) after one season despite its large, dedicated fanbase after failing to market that show

Implemented ads on Netflix plans that did not previously have them, essentially serving as a price increase for a lot of people

@netflix I'm coming for you and I cannot be contained. Give us back Dead Boy Detectives! I have a roll of 50 stamps and they all have your name on them.
