Salewa headquarters in South Tyrol, Italy

Vulcano Buono is a green roof masterpiece that seamlessly blends into the landscape and imitates the surrounding environment.
This is an awesome living roof tucked beneath a hill in Sora, Italy. One side, closest to the hill, has floor to ceiling windows to maximize natural daylight and makes a wonderful space that is used as a conference center.

California Academy of Sciences - San Francisco, CA
The California Academy of Sciences was designed by the world renowned architect Renzo Piano. The beauty in the design allows for passive cooling by using the middle atrium as an operable fan for the building. Essentially, the windows around the perimeter of the center atrium can be opened at the top and bottom, allowing for a cross breeze to blow and cool the interior.

Van Dusen Botanical Gardens - Vancouver, BC
The living roof of Van Dusen Botanical Gardens grows outside downtown Vancouver, Canada, in a residential neighborhood. The surrounding botanical gardens is immense compared to the Van Dusen Visitors Center pictured above. The undulating living roof and solar panels imitate the surrounding mountain ranges of British Columbia. The living roof is small and tactful. On the inside, the center skylight and surrounding wavy ceiling are equally as impressive. The visitor's center is tiny compared to the entire 55-acre garden with its 7,500 plants from around the globe.

620 Jones is a prime example of how roof top gardens can maximize space and transform busy urban neighborhoods to a peaceful and trendy environment. University of San Francisco - Living Architecture Design Competition
Friday 4.26.2013 was the first Living Architecture competition held at the University of San Francisco ! This interdisciplinary contest invited students to design in accordance with the Living Building Challenge and aimed at integrating green space into an urban environment. Students were asked to design a future Tenderloin Recreation Center that would provide children an escape from the harsh realities of San Francisco's notoriously dangerous neighborhood while concurrently connecting them with nature through a roof garden.
Students had only several weeks to prepare for this out-of-class assignment; nonetheless, presentations were impressive and inspirational. Three groups presented their idea of sustainable architecture for the Tenderloin which incorporated a fitness center, classrooms, kitchen and living roof vegetable garden. This contest was such a success it is now being considered for the official contest of the CitiesAlive conference (in a more rigorous format) coming to San Francisco October 23-26.
