Every Fic a Comment

This is a sentiment shared by many in fandom, particularly authors, and there have been some coordinated efforts in the past to help increase the amounts of comments on fics! I have personally been helped by these types of accounts, and want to help others in fandom :]

What's one more blog to add to the pile? I was inspired by the deactivated @ao3statss and their combined efforts of reducing commentless fics and providing statistics about Ao3

I want to aim to continue that legacy, and to help with the effort on other fanfiction sites as well! Including Fanfiction.net, SquidgeWorld Archive, and Sunset Femslash Archive (all sites I have an account on)

There will be no spreadsheet to submit your fics to (these other accounts have that covered hehe), and will be more focused on stats, and suggestions for what to comment on (i.e. decade old fics, fics on xyz site, etc)

As detailed in a previous post, FFN is harder to get the numbers on as it involves a longer process than on OTW-framework sites. Thus, I will be making smaller posts like this to address stats for chunks of fandoms.

As it is more difficult to get these stats, the numbers may be a little off, but they are correct enough for general statistical needs.

I'm discovering that works posted to FFN have a pretty dang likely time to get reviewed, or at least that's what the numbers imply. 2% on Narnia! Madness!

I will operate this blog much in the same way Ao3 operates their website. It's an archive, or in my case, a statistics blog, first. Opinions on specific people/works are not important.

All this to say: yes, AI generated content already posted to any of the sites I provide stats for will be accounted for. Yes, works for fandoms that I believe are bad will be accounted for.

I have this principle in all of my endeavors of this variety. I have an index of any and all webrings on the indie web that I can find that I have on my personal website. There is a webring on that list that is for people who use generative AI. And yet I include it in the list because it is a resource and archive first and foremost.

Overall much better results than I was expecting! If I were to present a hypothesis, I'd say one of the reasons there is a much lower percentage of unreviewed fics on FFN is because of the older mantras of FFN, i.e. "no next chapter until I get x amount of reviews."

Say what you want about that expectation from authors; if I am correct, it does indeed lead to more stories having reviews left on them, even if the particular fic itself was not review begging.

So Fanfiction.net is a much different beast from Archive of Our Own. The tagging and sorting is vastly inferior, and there is no easy way to find out how many stories have zero reviews.

Thus, I must go in and sort by the two relevant options I have (All ratings and by reviews), then go to random page numbers further and further down the list until I can ping pong my way to the correct number.

Thus, I will not be able to put FFN stats on my general "stats at this point in time" posts, as that relies on the OTW's amazing filtering framework that AO3, SquidgeWorld, and Sunset use.

However, I do not wish to leave FFN out, as it is still one of the largest fanfiction databases still online. So, I will be making individual posts addressing chunks of FFN fandoms. For example, a post addressing the numbers for the ton ten anime fandoms, or some such. I will also include what page number to go to to start finding the first review-less fanfictions for y'all's ease of use.

Archive of Our Own is a fan work archive that has been in open beta since 2009.

Yet, over a thousand of these earliest works (some original to Ao3, some reposts judging by the backdating) have zero comments, and low engagement numbers by every metric.

A lot of these fics easily slip through the cracks because of the tagging system. Ao3's tagging system is amazing for those using it nowadays, where the system is firmly establish and there are new tagging conventions. However, these early fics have one-sentence summaries with maybe not even the bare minimum tagged.

I would like to help these fics in particular first, as many of the fandoms are very of-their-time. I provide a simple link to these fics below the cut.

On Archive of Our Own, there are:

16,376,489 fics, 4,069,994 have no comments (25%)

On Squidge World Archive, there are:

69,518 fics, 55,417 have no comments (80%)

On Sunset Femslash Archive, there are:

1,129 fics, 1,044 have no comments (92%)

We can work together to reduce these amounts! Easiest to strike would probably be Sunset, considering there are just over 1K fics in total
