Why are you so afraid of something that's already happened? Why are you so scared of the outcome you've already lived? Is it hope? Or the need of keeping the dream alive?
Aren't you the one that accepts reality and the horrendous nature behind the human condition? Aren't you the one that's so strong to overcome everything on your own? Then little girl, if you can carry the world on your shoulders, what are you so afraid of?
If you've been through so much worse, what makes you think it's different this time? What makes you think it'll end with you, when pain has only reduced across the years? And yet we have much more to handle. Dry your eyes and look up darlin, for what's to come... it's not the end, not yet.
— Sylvia Plath, The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath | Jean-Paul Sartre, No Exit
Eavan Boland, “A Woman Painted on a Leaf”
[Text ID: “I want a poem I can grow old in. I want a poem I can die in.”]
He says I know things. And maybe I do — much of what is not said.
The silence in his eyes. “In your eyes I read such strange things, but your lips deny they’re true.”
If only my words could match whatever lives in my head. My own limits, the limits of language the barrier of feeling and fear.
He says I know things. And maybe I know what he knows — but he does not know. And he never will
The small box inside of me appears empty. It will remain empty to foreign eyes. For love is meant to be felt, not displayed.
He says I know things. But I know nothing. The world has taken what was mine, and I am a canvas layered with other people’s other things never truly mine.
If knowledge were something to find, to worship, to claim, it would not belong to me.
He says I know things. and he takes me in his arms and crushes my bitterness. And for a minute, maybe, I almost know things.
Things I wish I had never known.

you gotta touch the stove to learn its hot and then you gotta touch it again for fun
i remember learning the word melancholy at age 7 or something and thinking oh this word's gonna be huge for me
from A Literate Passion: Letters of Anaïs Nin and Henry Miller (1932-1953)
I.
The ceiling laughs
II.
III.
Much later I found my words meant nothing, just a piece of meat waiting.
IV.
He's changed, but I don't blame him. What is life if not a never-ending twist and ache?
V.
I'll always be the one standing there the print left on the wall for no one to see, or worse, a gaudy portrait for others.
I am nothing but someone else's frame.
VI.
I talk too much — maybe that's the problem. Maybe I should let [them] approach me. But why? Why is it wrong for a girl to hunt and speak her mind?

Elizabeth Acevedo, from The Poet X; “God”
[Text ID: “Sometimes I feel / my life would be easier / if I didn’t feel like such debt / to a God / that don’t really seem / to be out / here checking for me.”]
En algún momento soñé con el presente;
Avanzar Avanzar Avanzar
Pensando siempre en volver.
— Fernando Pessoa, The Book of Disquiet
[text ID: I never tried to be anything other than a dreamer. I never paid any attention to people who told me to go out and live. I belonged always to whatever was far from me and to whatever I could never be. Anything that was not mine, however base, always seemed to be full of poetry. The only thing I ever loved was pure nothingness.]

Elena Ferrante, from Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay (translated from the Italian by Ann Goldstein)
[Text ID: she wanted everything and pretended to want nothing.]
