Shannara show au where the writers weren’t cowards and Allanon’s ill advised past love affair was with Eventine’s actual canon sibling Breen Elessedil instead
@shannara Asked for some more and…
Sorry this took me a bit! But I was just thinking like…
We were talking about how Breen would - if we were to take anything from his literal seconds of screentime - probably have a lot in common with Flick Ohmsford. He’s the unremarkable sibling. The one who wants nothing to do with power, would rather thrust the greatness on the “chosen” one (he wants nothing to do with being in charge for example), just in the shadows. He loves his older brother, and there’s never any malice between them, but there is always part of him that is…wanting. For someone to acknowledge him, for someone to see him as Breen, since history won’t see him at all. And no one really does! He’s been Eventine’s little brother his whole life and for as long as he can remember, he hasn’t been much more.
But then here comes along Allanon, looking for information, and Breen can help him with that (it is not at all hard to put Breen in a scholarly position over a more militaristic one). And like suddenly…someone is paying attention to him? Not because he’s Eventine’s brother but like…actually interested in him as a person?? He’s valued as an individual? And by Allanon the fucking Druid of Paranor??? The attention is addicting; he falls in love he can’t help it. And Allanon likes him, too. The elves are a beautiful people to begin with, and Breen is sharp tongued and quick witted and funny.
Eventine isn’t thrilled. He sees exactly what’s going on. He tells Allanon as such, wary of potential repercussion, but firm about the safety of his brother. Allanon - to his surprise- agrees. He confesses to Breen that he will be leaving, that whatever happened between the two of them cannot continue. And Breen is massively hurt, and blames Allanon for leading him on (y'know…where the blame should have actually fully been…) if he knew he was never to stay - like Eventine feared he would feel. For making him feel like he was important. So much for being cared for.
The thing I wouldn’t like is that it may have had the potential to cast Eventine into the not so flattering light of “the homophobic relative”, since the show was already so set on smearing his name from here to kingdom come by not allowing him to like…explain why he did certain things, and this would have just been more icing on the cake (because the writers did not believe in any kind of nuance in characters over a certain age who were not Allanon - and sometimes not even him. As far as they were concerned, old people were just in the way of the young ones). But since I would be a writer in this hypothetical perfect world scenario, it would need to be clear (like it wasn’t in show…implication doesn’t work - subtly is lost on this audience and they just framed him as a dick) that the reason Eventine disapproved/discouraged any sort of entanglement with Allanon was that he knew it was a bad idea to do so. Allanon - though not a bad man - is not one who can be wholly trusted, nor is he one that can be depended on (he disappeared for literally years and then popped back like…sorry if that’s sketch). Allanon, as much as we like him, is a dangerous man, and not one, I would argue, that Eventine would want anywhere near his younger sibling (no matter who it was).
Breen doesn’t flee Arborlon to follow Allanon in a rage, nor does he particularly hold any sort of grudge against his older brother (their relationship is a touch more distant, but Breen understands why Eventine was so wary of them together). He retires from the palace and holes up in the outskirts of the city, where he remains for the rest of his life.
Then one of two things happens: either Breen is still alive when he hears rumours that Allanon has returned, and he goes to see for himself. He is not sacrificed to demons for shock value (because the last thing we should add to this show is the bury your gays trope). He and Allanon tentatively dance around one another, things are discussed, conclusions are reached.
OR
Breen dies before the events of the show because elderly, and when Allanon asks after him, he’s told that he’s gone. There’s your angst potential.
I feel like Jerle and Tay were those two childhood friends who argued about whether the other knew what kissing was, and Jerle obviously claimed he knew and when Tay told him to prove it, they really awkwardly pressed their lips together in an embarrassed little peck. And then immediately ran off to catch frogs or something with both little faces red like tomatoes.
Which could mean nothing.
Was reminded of this when double checking for hair descriptors. There is no reason Brooks needed to add the line of Jerle stroking Tay's hair, and yet.
(Yes he "stepped clear" - that just means out of having crushed him in a spin you around in a circle hug)

The feminine urge to HC Breen as a brunette like his brother at constant war with the persistant mental image of a blondie whenever I think about him.
OG trilogy elves that are canonically not blonde according to description: Eventine, Amberle, Ander (presumably), Preia Starle
OG Trilogy Elves that I have accepted as blondes: Edain (he bleached it), Dayel (angelic baby face blonde curls), Arion (/neg)
OG Trilogy Elves that Brooks wrote as blondes but I do not believe for one second: Durin, Jerle, Tay
OG Trilogy Elves that have no definitive yay or nay on the blonde scale, so they are not because I make the rules: Caerid (described as having darker skin - his hair is also dark fight me on that one), Jon-Lin Sandor, Aine
Some other fifth thing: Breen Elessedil
The feminine urge to HC Breen as a brunette like his brother at constant war with the persistant mental image of a blondie whenever I think about him.
Amberle Elessedil was 16 years old when she sacrificed her life.
Edain Elessedil was 19/20 years old when he sacrificed his.
I allow that to sink in but then also cry the entire time.Â
Though, truly, the surprise should be minimal that they would be so forth willing - their grandad was the youngest elven king on record up until that time, and was actively putting himself in danger for the good of his people. He just happened to get lucky.
The fandom christened "Durin's unnamed husband" needs a name - I vote something like Arlem or Elian and he just looks like a very average blue collar man.
Dinner with the era of Elessedils circa TSOS must have been a fun time because you get the full spectrum of elven WeirdTM at one grand table.
And what I'm saying is Flick and Shea get invited to Arborlon in my mind, which means at least once Eventine called for family dinner, and of course it's chaotic but it feels so...alive and vibrant, that the Valemen can't help but enjoy every minute of it.

Breen left all political, relational and military strategy and navigation to his elder brother, because he was more than capable of handling himself in those areas, but was the sibling who had to remind Eventine to eat and sleep because he was super bad at that.
“I ask for what must be. You have the skills, the heart, the right, and the need to do what I have asked. Believe what I have told you. Do as I have said. Then will the Shadowen be destroyed.”

[Image ID: Par Ohmsford, from the elbows up. The background behind him is contrasting shades of red. He is wearing a brown tunic over a darker, long-sleeved shirt with a blue cloak wrapped around his neck. He is looking to his right with a worried expression, one hand at his heart. He has light skin, greenish eyes, and blonde curly hair reaching down past his chin. His ears are pointed. A red light creeps up from the bottom, the light reflecting in his eyes. There is gold border with text on either side of him, reading from left side to right: “Par Ohmsford, bearer of the Wishsong’s promise, I charge you with recovering the Sword of Shannara—Only through the Sword can the truth be revealed.” /End ID]
[Image ID: Wren Elessedil, from the elbows up. The background behind her is contrasting shades of teal. She is wearing a purple shirt, dark belt with gold platings in the middle, and a red cloak that covers part of her left arm. A black arm brace covers her right wrist/hand and she is holding a leather pouch by the strings. She has tan skin, hazel eyes, and ashy blonde hair, curly and cut short. Her ears are pointed. A light blue light is glowing around her from the bottom, reflecting in her eyes as well. There is a gold border with text on either side of her. Reading from left side to right, it says: “Wren, child of hidden, forgotten lies, yours is a charge of equal importance—Find the Elves and return them to the world of men.” /End ID]
[Image ID: Walker Boh, from the elbows up. The background behind him is contrasting shades of blue. He wears a dark green, loose-fitted tunic with a brown cloak around his shoulders. His dark hair is long and slightly wavy, and he has a short beard. He has brown eyes and pale skin. His right sleeve is empty and cut short. His left arm is cradled close to his chest, his hand curled up as if holding something. His ears are slightly pointed. A dark blue light creeps up him from below, reflecting in his eyes. Around him is a golden border with text on either said. Reading from left side to right: “Walker Boh, you of no belief, seek that belief - and the understanding necessary to sustain it—Search out disappeared Paranor and restore the Druids.” /End ID]
You think at one point Shea asked one of his new elf pals in Arborlon if they knew his dad and then they sarcastically asked if he knew their man friend back at him?
Sometimes you just gotta accept you are in a small and very niche Fandom corner because you will be having incomprehensible no-shape- only-feel ship emotions at 1:30 in the AM and just have to...sit with them, I guess.

So, I'm accidentally tagging someone twice, but look at this card and tell me that's not Allanon, Brin and Rone from Wish. Didn't happen in the book, but sure looks like it could have been!
From the Druid Craft Tarot. The authors names escapes me.
Oh dude it SO looks like them - the vibe is right on.Â
