the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be apart of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.

“You can’t quit three days before the biggest show of our entire career!”

James casually taps his cigarette off in the tray sat in the middle of Lance’s dining table, as if they’re discussing the weather rather than the catastrophic implosion of their band.

“O-kay,” he says slowly, “well, I am, so…?”

“No the fuck you are not.” Lance grits, knuckles turning white where he grips the edge of the table. He’s seriously considering flipping the entire thing over.

“Guys,” Hunk cuts in quickly, both hands raised in a peacekeeping gesture, “I know everybody’s stressed right now, but maybe we should all just calm down and—”

Pidge's chair screeches violently across the floor.

“I’m gonna kill him,” they announce, already halfway over the table. “I am going to fucking kill him!”

Or: James quits the band at the worst possible moment and offers up his famous guitarist ex, Keith Kogane, to take his place. But if there's one thing Lance McClain truly hates, it's eyeliner-wearing, mullet-having, nepo baby bastards.

might be a hot take but hear me out before you beat me to death…

i don’t think klance would have had such an insane impact on us as a society (yes a society. it’s that serious) if they were canon.

if we got what we wanted in the show, it probably wouldn’t have inspired the endless amount of fanart and fanfiction depicting what *could* have been. there’s something so bittersweet about them not being canon… in a way, i’m glad they’re not. i don’t think the writers could have handled their relationship with the care it deserves, just given their time constraints and the fact that 2016 wasn’t a super accepting time for gay people.
