On the left side of this fireplace is a carving of Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany. On the right side is Prince Franz Joseph of Austria. It was carved by a French WWI soldier and used by officers. During the war, it was in a closed room with a roof but these have long since been destroyed. It is in a very obscure location on private land in a forest on a hillside that was quite difficult to reach and then to find. The
original metal grating at the bottom of the fireplace on which burning wood and hot coals once sat remains where it was left a hundred years ago. To my knowledge, there is nothing like this anywhere else

A whale seemed to "come from nowhere" and appear on the beach while Father Albertus was taking a Sunday afternoon stroll after his sermon had ended.
Some are calling it a “strange act of nature” as a couple of fishermen just off the shoreline saw the whale appear to breach the shore and open its mouth to “swallow the poor fellow wholly up”.
The whale then abruptly returned to the sea leaving the witnesses in disbelief. They returned to shore to tell of the sight to every townspeople that would listen to them. “If it hadn’t been so early in the day, I would have said drink had blurred their vision."

Recent posting trends caused me to slowly remember a double dactyl that I wrote in 2007, which went from being, yesterday, a flicker of an impression of something I might once have thought--under the dark, under the park, tunnel that's under a park?--to complete phrases until at dinner tonight I remembered about Joyce and fluorescence and everything except the opening nonsense syllables, which I had to recover by finding where I originally wrote the thing down--which is funny, because I think reading those syllables on the wall was the only reason I thought of making a double dactyl in the first place. (I got them slightly wrong actually--it's "hitherandthithering" and it's from Finnegans Wake.)

The core conceit of Lord of the Rings is pretty funny. You are a twenty three year old in a suburb of Maine. The little bracelet in your grandpa’s attic has an inscription on it that is the password to the world’s entire nuclear arsenal. It is up to you to walk to the only hydraulic press in the world, located in Arizona, before the FBI finds the bracelet, kills you, and enslaves the suburb of Maine you currently live in
Also the 90-year old hobo that your grandpa beat in a rap battle for possession of the bracelet while hiding from the Romanian secret police really loved the bracelet because it was coated in small amounts of LSD and tried to hunt and kill your grandpa to get it back. He was then apprehended by the FBI and instantly gave them your grandpa’s address. Seal Team Six is about to break down your door and shoot you, says your local congressman who can also do cool magic tricks
There's a guy in NY who MIGHT be capable of destroying the codes but won't coz he simply wants to spend time with his wife. So it's up to your grandpa's old friend in rural Ohio to get you the friends capable of finishing the task.
The aircraft are all under the command of the Australian government, which has declared that the nuclear arsenals are not their problem and that no aircraft will help anyone out with that problem. Your grandfather did fly with the bracelet one time, but he only got away with that because no one involved knew what the bracelet was and it would have been a huge deal if anyone had realized what was up. If you charter a flight towards the world's only hydraulic press, the Australians will know and throw lightning at the plane.
You can't fly to Arizona because the FBI has a massive radar installation located right next to the hydraulic press, and part way through the story Seal Team Six gets upgraded to also being fighter pilots.
Also, one of the guys on your team who used to be a Green Beret has decided the best way to solve this problem is if he becomes President and takes over the nuclear arsenal himself, because the bracelet told him so.

Part of the reason we don't see a lot of textile art is because, frankly, textiles tend to degrade over time - especially ones that had utility! And yes, pigments and weaving and dying all boosted the expense of things, when we were finally reliably block-printing fabrics and broad reams of paper, it was no longer just the wealthy who could afford pretty patterns!
In the Americas, a far wider variety of pigments also became available because of the abundance of... well, a shitton of flora and minerals, some of which weren't as common in Europe.
