I don't think Brutus is a masochist, the physical form wrapped in barbed wire and chains, humans only seek the pain if they're a masochist. Otherwise they seek the comfort and healing that comes from the pain. The relief of it all. He wants to be free from the burden his mortal form brought. The shadowman likely used him and his alcoholism and distorted his perception of strength, if he ever gained a little touch of clarity it would make sense he'd abandon the chains that hold him down and seek the comfort of freedom.
