@alumniofny is a sneaker boutique that's been a Crown Heights staple for more than two decades. Right off the Eastern Parkway, it's no stranger to the celebratory spirit (and madness) of the annual Labor Day weekend. To commemorate the occasion, @essenticnyc thought it was only appropriate for @alumniofny to host a fete of its own, and to accommodate the jumpoff with a special musical treat. Crown Sound was the result of this epiphany. Mixed by Harlem's @dollardollardollar and cover designed by our international connect @rarebirth, we're very happy and excited the mixtape came out exactly the way we envisioned it, and we can't wait to share it with the neighborhood. Last Friday, @essenticnyc's @jaekicho and @nakinboots (#wontyme) rocked a DJ set right outside of NYU's Skirball Center. What awaited them was a mob of feverish K-pop fans screeching at the top of their lungs and dancing along to every record. It was an amazing turnout, and once again reminded us the insanity of K-pop fans. Here's a little history lesson. On the left is the legendary King of Pop, Michael Jackson. On the right is the 8th President of South Korea, Kim Dae-jung. The two connected because of their belief in world peace and respect for each other's humanitarian work. This was a photo taken on Kim Dae-jung's inauguration. Yes, MJ flew out to Seoul for this. It's incredible how two world-class figures in completely different fields connected for politics, ditto. MJ passed away five years ago on June 25th, while former President Kim passed away less than two months later on August 18, 2009. Whether you liked them or not, you can't deny one's achievements as a musician, and the other's fight against Korea's military regime, which earned him The Nobel Peace Prize. Real bosses, and real OGs. Yuri Kochiyama's family suffered as a result of the Japanese-American internment camp during World War II. After the War, Yuri and her husband moved to Harlem, New York, where she became an activist, who fought alongside Malcolm X until his death (she was right next to him when he was assassinated). Throughout her life, she continuously fought as a figure against injustice, and served as a mentor to several generations of human rights activists and freedom fighters. She passed on June 1st, 2014, at the age of 93. This photo was taken by our friend @anrizzy, who had the honor of meeting her several years prior. The big homey @slscp (DJ Soulscape) stopped by New York City for less than 24 hours after making multiple stops below the Mason-Dixon Line, digging through the crates of every record store you could think of.
