2017 AFLPA Best First Year Player - Andrew McGrath (Essendon) Just over a week since being named as the NAB AFL Rising Star, Essendon’s Andrew McGrath has continued on his winning way, being voted as the AFLPA’s Best First Year Player for 2017. Playing off half-back for much of the season, the Bomber’s first-ever No.1 pick averaged 19 disposals a game to help his team’s resurgence into the Top 8, culminating with a best-on-ground performance in his first AFL final on the weekend. Finishing just 24 votes clear of Port Adelaide’s Sam Powell-Pepper, McGrath is the second Essendon player to take home the award with current captain Dyson Heppell having been named in 2011. Earlier in the night, McGrath joined teammates Zach Merrett and Orazio Fantasia as the trio were named in the 22Under22 team.
