And you know what, HĂ©ctor ? Iâd do it again.Â
I donât regret what I did, Iâd do it again.Â
It doesnât matter that now Iâm the villain.
(Some times after modern!HĂ©ctor meets canon!Ernesto (and yes, theyâre humans. why ? IâM TOO LAZY to draw skeletons./cries) and all the pieces of the puzzles assemble in HĂ©ctorâs mind.)

#14 on your writing prompt for the "Coco" fandom?
Writing prompts
#14. âDuct tape? Duct tape is not going to fix this!â
Sure thing! This prompt sounds like it was meant to inspire something funny, but this turned out to be something⊠not funny? Sorry âbout that, but it was fun to write. Thanks for the prompt!
âDuct tape? Duct tape is not going to fix this!â
Holding the roll of duct tape in his hand, HĂ©ctor crossed his arms and matched Ernestoâs glare with a glare of his own. With the way his murderer and one time friend was acting, youâd have thought HĂ©ctor had suggested he fix the splintered fibula with a wad of old chewing gum and saliva.
âOh, and youâre an expert in this, hmm?â HĂ©ctor snapped, irritation growing at the disgust and insult on Ernestoâs face.Â
What right did this pendejo have to yell at HĂ©ctor, anyway? HĂ©ctor wasnât the one who had come sneaking out of the shadows after his family had retired for the night to ask for help. It was Ernesto who had snuck up on HĂ©ctor outside the Rivera apartments, shoulders hunched, eyes wide and pleading as he asked as timidly as possible for some way to fix the fracture in his leg. HĂ©ctor, who had quickly gotten over his shock, only took a moment to nod begrudgingly before heading inside to retrieve the roll of duct tape.
It wasnât the first time Ernesto had come to him for help. It had been over a decade since that fateful DĂa de Muertos, and though HĂ©ctor could never forgive Ernesto for all that he had done, he wasnât completely heartless.
Heâd never been able to turn down someone in need.Â
âŠeven murderous, ungrateful jerks.
The family didnât know that HĂ©ctor sometimes helped the musician that had caused them so much grief, and he wanted it to stay that way. Ernesto wasnât allowed into the home, so HĂ©ctor walked with him to a nearby warehouse he knew of. There, he had taken the duct tape from his pocket, and watched anger and disbelief blossom on Ernestoâs face.
âI know enough to know that pinche duct tape is not going to fix this,â Ernesto snapped back, and gestured sharply at the thin crack circling his left fibula. It was smallâbarely enough to warrant the whining and wincing Ernesto kept doingâbut HĂ©ctor knew small fractures didnât stay small. They grew, and grew, until the bone split, and pain raced up and down both halves with even the smallest of movements.
âNothingâs going to fix this,â HĂ©ctor said. He unraveled some tape and tore into it with his teeth, ignoring Ernestoâs frown. âIn case you missed it, amigo, weâre dead. Our bones donât heal if weâre being forgotten. A cast isnât going to set that. This,â he held up the strip of silver tape, âIs the only thing we can do. It helped me all those times I broke something.â
Ernestoâs expression faltered. He glanced down, and for once HĂ©ctor saw something that might have been remorse on his old friendâs face. A memory flashed before himâa vision of a younger Ernesto, alive in Santa Cecilia, unable to meet a much younger HĂ©ctorâs eyes while he apologized for insulting the boyâs dead parents. HĂ©ctor, who had been in tears, and sniffled and nodded and hugged his older friend who hesitantly hugged him back. Theyâd both been orphans, and HĂ©ctor knew Ernesto hadnât mean what he had said, because heâd felt the same pain of never knowing his family.
Of course now HĂ©ctor wasnât going to hug Ernesto. Neither of them wanted that. Ernesto definitely didnât deserve one. Instead, HĂ©ctor waited.
Ernestoâs shoulders slumped. He huffed, pulled his threadbare coat closer around him, and said, âOf course. Lo siento, HĂ©ctor.â
âAre you going to let me help you now?â HĂ©ctor said.Â
Still unable to meet his old friendâs eyes, Ernesto sat on a low stool and gingerly rested his foot on a nearby crate. Without another word, HĂ©ctor stuck the tape over the crack and began to wrap it quickly and easily, ignoring Ernestoâs heavy sigh, and wondering how much longer until Ernesto once again came to him for help as his memory faded painfully slowly in the Land of the Living.
âI just want to send him homeâŠâ
Though technically this could be applied to a few different situations, what I had in mind was a moment in the Coco novelization. After Imelda confronts Miguel at that iron gate and he runs away again, she actually went back to meet up with the family, but then took a seat on a bench and started to cryâŠI honestly felt so bad for her ;w; Youâd never imagine her the type to break down everÂ
