mel who meows at the dinner table after andre dies. mr. and mrs. kriegman sit silently, eating their food, only to be interrupted by the loudest noise they’ve ever heard mel make. for a while they wonder why she cries every time they eat, but finally they realize why. andre used to sneak bites of his food to her. whether it was a small piece of toast in the morning, part of the meat from his sandwich at lunch, or some sort of vegetable at dinner, he always made sure she was full. now she’s confused. she doesn’t know where her snacks are, and most importantly, she doesn’t know where the boy who normally feeds her is.
