best of Black TV comedy.
I sought out to make this article about the best Black female comedy shows currently on TV, because I could happily rattle them off if it was 1998. Buttt in todayâs world, that list ran short. [Personally, as a comedy writer, I thought we could be making much faster progress on this, but Tump is President, so I guess I canât say Iâm surprised at America.]Â
Letâs open this list up to the best Black comedy shows currently on TV. While I definitely see us reppinâ on some hot drama shows, the lack leading and/or majority Black comedies is severally lacking. And Iâve passed my threshold of tolerance for white humor, sorry, but it is what it is. I mean, I loved Friends just like the next middle-class suburb Black chick, but getting a little laughter in the form of language and culture that resonates with my soul is just... necessary!
Hopefully youâll be able to walk away from this list with a few new binge-worthy shows or at least know youâve already gobbled up all the hilarious-ism (we love our -âismâs) that current black comedies have to offer.
INSECURE
HBO - SEASON 1
Iâm currently reframing from sliding onto Black Twitter to prevent East Coast spoilers to ruin this shows 6th episode. Insecure has been such a pleasure to watch every Sunday night. If you think one funny black girl is good in a show, try two! I havenât seen a quality black girl-ship on TV since Girlfriends. Issa and Molly just make you want to be a fly on the wall of their lives. Itâs refreshing to be able to witness these two show America are well-rounded Black women really are. Weâre not just the help, or token co-worker with an attitude, or a baby mama.Â
I hope HBO continues opening the door to more types of these comedies. (SN: Just learned that the hilarious Natasha Rothwell, a.k.a Kellie, will be developing a comedy for HBO)Â
ATLANTA
FX - SEASON 1
This ones a no brainer. Even the whitest of my friends mention [every time I see them] how amazing Atlanta is. Now my biased love for Donald Glover is definitely not over hyping this show, but if for some reason youâve been in a coma, donât know about wifi, or voted for Trump, then youâve missed out. Canât replay those hilarious tweets Black Twitter transcribes when weâre watching live. Sorry, ships sailed. But the mishaps and familiarity that Atlanta gives, reminds me that their still hope for TV. Donald Glover is not afraid to touch on racial judgement in the music industry, a fatherâs struggle, mental illness, and Juneteenth.
These episodes are truly worth viewing over and over again.
CHEWING GUMÂ
NETFLIX - SEASON 1
This show was slightly hard swallow and first, but once I set aside my reserves it wasnât so bad. Michaela Coel is a British poet and writer who holds nothing back in her writing or acting. Chewing Gum follows a sexually curious 24-year-old who sets out to lose her virginity despite having a super religious boyfriend and family. Itâs easy to see the comedy comes through during the characters wild and failed attempts to embrace this new desire and it is a truly even more painful to watch.
BLACK-ISH
ABC - SEASON 3
Like the modern day Huxtables, Black-ish has definitely been a winner in my book from the start. And thatâs not only because I love to see what Tracey Ellis Ross is wearing. I know for some this show doesnât feed their 90s nostalgia, but the 90s were twenty years ago, get over it [yeah, weâre old!]. The positive image of a loving, entertaining, and unbreakable Black family is overly necessary. The Johnsonâs may to represent every family, but during that twenty-four minutes they definitely make you want to be apart of theirs.Â
THE CARIMICHEAL SHOW
NBC - SEASON 2
Set it my hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina and created/starring a Carolinean as well, The Carimicheal Show is a simple pleasure that fits. The episode plot lines arenât over the top and farfetched. Theyâre conversations we have amongst our friends and family in the same way. And watching this show will make you feel right at home.Â
If youâve ever had the pleasure of watching one of Jerrod Carimichealâs stand-up shows (use your parents HBO GO account), then you know youâll get no shortage of laughs from these first two seasons.
SOME GIRLS
BBC/HULU - SEASON 3
Stumbling upon this gem last winter was the best feeling since knowing I no longer had to participate in the mad boo-grab that is âcuffing season.â Some Girls is a down-to-earth comedy about just trying to fit in and figure it out later. We experience the ups and downs of life through the eyes of Viva. Viva is âgood-girlâ on and off the soccer field. And with the help of her three best friends, manages to barely survive bullies, romance, and a father-teacher relationship.Â
If I was back in high-school, this is the kind of girl Iâd want to be. Someone who stands strong on who they are and want to be, while pushing those around to do the same.
Alrighty. Thatâs it. Miss something? Please get me hip, I can only watch re-runs of Atlanta for so long.Â
