"Thanks, Elijah..." The witch had come to take on a pseudo-paternal role with Caleb recently and those words meant a lot to him in the moment.
Caleb did not feel anything amiss when Elijah's magic slid into his mind, the witch's magical manipulations doing as he intended to obscure parts of the conversation from the werewolf. All he could think on now were Elijah's encouraging words towards how far he had come and they were something Caleb was appreciative to hear, especially when hardly anyone else had ever told him as such.
"I'm afraid I'm going to have to run in a few minutes. I have a pack meeting to attend," the wolf voiced out with a quick glance of the watch on his wrist.
Good, it seemed like Caleb didn't notice anything amiss. "I'll get out of your way." He stood and gave Celeb a loose hug before taking a step towards the door. In his mind, he started mapping out a somewhat roundabout route back to the tower from Caleb's house so he would have some time to himself to think. "Good luck with the pack meeting. Hopefully it goes smoothly."
“Okay.” Eiji answered simply. He just wanted to collapse in bed and give in to sleep for what was hopefully the next twelve hours. The door clicked behind him and he curled up in bed. Thankfully the alcohol was merciful and he fell asleep quickly.
—
When he finally woke, it was to the thumping of his own head and a steady pain in his arm. He groaned to himself and buried his face in the pillow for a moment longer before heaving himself upright and out of bed. He needed pain meds and a shower, but right now he needed food more. He ambled down to the kitchen, where he’d forgotten about the breakfast his father had suggested. “Like I fell off something and got concussion.” He responded, sitting down in one of the chairs. Eiji’s gaze briefly flickered upwards to watch his father, still surprised by the sight of him cooking breakfast. “What are you making?”
Elijah nodded with a self deprecating huff. "I should have expected that answer. I'm making eggs and toast. Apparently avocado is good for concussions so I have some of that too." The kettle finished and he set a mug with a tea bag down in front of Eiji and poured the water into it. "This is a painkiller from the healers that should help. Just try to drink it slowly." From the tightness around his eyes it looked like Eiji could use it.
He glanced over at the email still open on his laptop to make sure there were no new messages before turning back to the stove. It felt awkward to just stand there without saying anything, but when he took a breath to talk, he realized he wasn't sure what to say to Eiji, and instead finished up and brought two plates over to the table.
[text from James] Eiji sends his regards. Make of that what you will.
Elijah considers sending 'and the easter bunny says not to forget your dentist appointment' but decides against it and just leaves the message on read. It might be worth it to bug James's phone, but given that it was sent to the number he uses for students so Elijah assumes it's just an empty provocation.
“Healing potions? What do we need a potion for that we can’t heal on our own?” Carmen asked. It wasn’t arrogance, it was genuine curiosity. Her sire had held very little interest in her once she had been turned, already on the lookout for a new human companion that would play to his ego, rather than spending his time educating Carmen. “Is it because of these attacks? The ones on the vampires?” Her voice dropped to a whisper then.
“No.” Carmen shook her head sheepishly. “I don’t really get to see other vampires very often.” She said, having the sense to at least keep her voice quiet at that moment. It was only when she managed to escape as a bat that she was able to run into other vampires and she had a feeling now her parents knew about it, she wouldn’t be able to do that soon, either.
"Healing potions for the people vampires feed on. You all will be fine, we just want to make sure everyone else is too." Her question did make him wonder though, he'd heard so far all of the vampires who had been attacked were able to heal without magical intervention, but that might change. He furrowed his brow when she said she didn't see other vampires. The way she phrased it sounded like someone else was preventing her from talking to them rather than a choice she was making for herself. "I'm sure they would be happy to talk to you. I could ask Isabelle to come here if somewhere in Klin doesn't work." He imagined being somewhat on her own as a vampire couldn't be easy on Carmen.

Jo took the offered seat without hesitation, though she didn’t relax into it. Her posture stayed upright, one leg crossing over the other as her gaze moved briefly across the cluttered desk before returning to Elijah. The mess registered somewhere in the back of her mind—ordinary problems, ordinary frustrations. It almost felt strange in the context of the conversation they were about to have.
“So there has been contact,” she noted quietly, less a question than an observation. Her expression didn’t shift much, though her attention sharpened slightly. “And you do not deny his involvement?” Jo let her words settle for a beat before continuing, her tone measured, almost careful now. “I understand the two of you have had… difficulties in the past.” A diplomatic way to phrase it. “That can't have been easy to navigate. Your responsibilities to your coven, your position on the council, and your responsibilities as a father.” Her head tilted slightly. “I can imagine those things don’t always align as neatly as people expect them to.”
She watched him closely then, studying not just the answers themselves but the space between them. “I’m sure what you want most is to protect your son,” she continued after a moment, voice even. “And despite how this looks, I don’t think anyone believes Eiji was the architect behind any of this.” Not the important parts, anyway. “From where we’re standing, it looks more like Artemis found someone vulnerable enough to use. Someone with the right history, the right connections.” A small pause followed. “And exploited that.”
Jo folded her hands loosely in her lap. “We’re in a unique position right now because of the recent negotiations with Artemis. For the first time in a long while, there’s room for cooperation instead of escalation.” Her gaze held his steadily. “I can’t promise immunity. We both know that isn’t realistic. But if Eiji cooperates fully, there is a possibility for leniency. Reduced sentencing. Consideration.” She let the words settle deliberately before adding, quieter this time, “A chance for him to eventually come home instead of spending the rest of his life running.”
Elijah sighed and put on a self deprecating smile. "I should have been more exact in my wording: there's been no contact, we haven't spoken since his escape. I've sent him a few open messages but he hasn't responded." And Elijah had no intention of giving Jo any sort of access to where he'd left those messages. "Yes, Eiji is involved with artemis, denying it at this point won't help anyone."
He kept his face in a neutral sort of smile while Jo started talking more about Eiji. He actually found her assertion that Eiji was just a pawn in everything artemis was doing and didn't have a part in planning any of it vaguely insulting. The hacks made much more sense if Eiji had been one of the masterminds, but that wasn't a sentiment he was planning to share. "That sounds more like a referendum on my parenting than any sort of investigative strategy. You could get all of that from the rumor mill without having to talk to me."
"I don't control him, Jo. At this point I think you'd do a better job getting through to him or other artemis members. You're a human who sees supernatural messes all the time, you probably understand their points better than any of us." He remembered Jo not being happy with the supernatural and wanted to see if he could lure her into revealing something.
It was probably for the best that his father had decided on the more discreet way of entering the building. Eiji didn’t have the energy to think about what that meant, he just knew he probably didn’t have the patience tonight to face anymore unwanted stares.
“I just want to sleep.” He answered, already following the familiar path he’d taken so many times throughout his life. It had somehow never felt like home living in the tower. When he reached the door to his own bedroom he paused, assuming his father had followed him, “I’m fine. You can go back to whatever you were doing before you came to find me. I’m sure it was something important, right?”
He had followed Eiji through the apartment, planning to head to bed as well. It was the wrong time to get into an argument with Eiji about what or who was important so Elijah just shrugged. "I was just getting some sleep. If you need anything you know where I am." He took a step back towards his own room and stopped, tilting his head. "I'll see you in the morning? Breakfast?" The question came out hopeful, though he was half expecting Eiji to turn him down.
------
The next morning he'd gotten up early even though he'd sat up for a bit listening to see if Eiji would stay or leave. He was still there in the morning though, so Elijah dashed off a couple of emails before going into the kitchen to make breakfast, leaving his laptop perched on the edge of the table. He was standing at the stove when he heard footsteps behind him and turned to greet Eiji. "Good morning. How are you feeling?"
"I wouldn't take that to heart. If I was on the run and it was my dad, I'd think it was a trap," she admitted. It wouldn't be difficult to imagine that Eiji felt the same. If Eiji wanted to be found, he would have made himself known. Atlas didn't know the siblings well enough, but if they were as close as she and her brother were, they were in contact. "When I was younger, I always believed that deities gave us siblings so we would never be lonely," she said, absently popping another piece of sushi in her mouth and chewing. "They probably text daily."
It was a difficult question and the elf took her time chewing her lunch before she answered. "If it was Artus?" she asked, still taking the time to answer. There was always politics to these things, Elijah was a leader and so was her brother. But, in this instance, she decided to believe that Elijah was asking out of earnestness. "If it was Artus, he would want our father to stand down from his position of power. I could imagine that Eiji might feel the same given the terrorism," she answered. After realising how blunt it sounded, she gave the witch a sheepish smile. "Sorry."
It was comforting to think that Eiji and Rei were talking and weren't completely cutoff from each other. "I like your way of thinking about it. I bet if you asked Elio he would neither confirm or deny." Atlas's old idea about siblings seemed like something the deity would appreciate.
He sighed at their answer to his question about what to do. "It's ok. I'd rather have an honest answer even if it's hard to hear." He wasn't going to stand down, at least not for the next while until he had someone ready and capable to take over. Daphne was currently his choice, but she still needed time. "I guess we'll eventually have to figure something out. Hopefully with the new council member nothing like... before will happen again." For both their sakes he didn't really feel like talking about the kidnappings.
This fragile peace was sightly frightening to Howell. As a human in lived in the world of laws and rules and rarely did it fluctuate to extremes in his lifetime. That was another privilege he had been born into by shear fact of where his family had decided to live. Still he’d come to know about supernaturals over twenty years ago. In the beginning he thought they must be ruled archaically through some sort of high powered monarchy but as time past he saw it was much less organized than that. By the time Artemis had come around he already had been informed of the council and was weary of exactly what the did and did not impose upon their own society. “A break down, well we wouldn’t want that.” The thought alone was terrifying, and he wondered if it had ever happened before or where they all just creatures of comfort these days. Could that be what’s keeping them all at bay from jus destroying each other and the city? “So what you’re saying is this alliance is fragile and only viable while the majority agrees on things….”
“...I think I’ll need another drink.” Flagging the waiter down he dipped in glass indicating he needed another.
"Couldn't you say the same about most forms of governance?' He asked with a slight smile and finally took a sip of his own drink. He couldn't help being a little bit satisfied to see Howell so clearly rattled. It was nice to have someone from artemis on the back foot for once. Still, Howell needed to be able to function and not think he needed to bring security guards to the council or worse something that could affect their magic.
"I don't want you to walk into the council meeting feeling like a fight's gonna start at the drop of a hat." He let his posture relax into something more casual, trying to put Howell at ease. So far Elijah hadn't felt a need to skim his mind for anything, and he'd prefer to keep it that way at least for their first meeting. "There are plenty of things that we agree on, and as much as we may argue, it hasn't gotten anywhere near something that bad. People will be guarded, but they're giving you a chance." He grinned. "I promise, the bylaws don't let us sacrifice anyone to the chaos gods until at least their fourth meeting."
Eiji would probably regret his choice in the morning, but for now he was tired of feeling hurt all the time and he wanted to believe things could get better for a little while.
“I have a concussion. I don’t think teleporting me anywhere is going to be a good idea.” He grumbled, not enjoying pointing out his own fragility even more. “Let’s just get a cab…” He sighed. Despite his dizzy state, he saw the lights of another cab approaching and lifted his hand. Somehow finding his way into the back seat, his head tipped and rested against the glass of the window.
The ride back was mostly silent, though Elijah kept an eye on his son without flat out staring just to make sure he was alright. He paid the driver and got out of the cab first to help Eiji. As they approached the tower he looked up and tried to see it the way Eiji did, not as somewhere that was safe but as a giant microscope. Trying to imagine that every time he spoke with someone it felt like they were staring at him reproachfully.
Elijah usually went through the main entrance, but this time he turned away towards the more private entrance on the side that was for the family and Elijah's inner circle. It let them take another elevator that went up easily to the floor where the family home was located. He reached out with a bit of magic to open the door so Eiji could go inside ahead of him. "Do you want something to eat or just to lay down?"

A part of him was questioning his sanity when he was willingly hanging out with his father. It was important to keep that connection open if he was ever going to get into the coven enough to find the weak point he needed. It was a means to an end. Thankfully, he had enough buried resentment that he did not feel guilty when he saw how happy his father was to see him, either unaware or ignoring the possible ulterior motives Rei clearly had. "I'm good. I was looking at the list too, I might visit the docks venue later but we can check out the main stage and light stage if you want?"
"Sounds good to me." He used his head to gesture towards the doors. It was a nice enough day so being in the park would be pleasant, and he couldn't help wondering if the elves had a hand in that. "I think the easiest way to get there would be to take public transport or teleport to one of the supernatural areas of the park so we don't become a part of the traffic mess." There was also the fact that he wanted to get through at least a little while with Rei before the two of them started arguing, and that would be easier to accomplish if they weren't stuck in a car together. "I leave the choice up to you though."
Caleb nodded in understanding and tried his best not to give away too much in his carefully schooled neutral expression. Elijah had been put in a tough situation and Caleb had a feeling that he might know which way the witch would lean.
I'll think on it..." was all Caleb could say. Eiji had been in the Lycaon's custody before he escaped after all, and while Caleb had promised to keep him safe, he also promised to keep Eiji under lock and key, something his pack had failed to do. His loyalty could not be to Elijah alone because this was much bigger than that.
He reached out and rested a hand over Caleb's. Part of it was a genuine thank you, the other reason though was so he could quietly slide into Caleb's mind to fuzz some of the details of their conversation. He should remember most of their conversation and the fact that Elijah was - for lack of a better word - compromised when it came to making decisions regarding Eiji, but he shouldn't remember Elijah's outburst telling him what sort of magic could locate his sons.
"You're growing into your role as a leader." He said with a small smile. "Your mother would be proud." That was genuine, and Elijah couldn't help feeling a bit of his own pride for Caleb, even as he was betraying him.
With a heavy sigh Howell leaned back, licking his lips while deep in thought. Elijah was almost truthful with him, but that wasn’t enough to cut him off. Again he though, the witch in front of him seemed like a decent man, intent on making sure his own people not just survived but thrived. To survive they need not get on the bad side of Artemis, or at the most desperate measures eliminate the group. The newer council member did not want to see either outcome happen. He wanted an ally, needed one for that matter. “Well that sounds…. a little bit unfair in the grand scheme of things does it not?” Taking another sip he placed the glass down, fingers playing with the edge of the rim. “I am use to the power that comes with money and status yes…..but this.. this goes beyond that.” How on earth did they have any semblance of balance between powers? Just by a hand shake? He couldn’t imagine a being so powerful they could change reality just agreeing to something unless it benefited them. “So what do you do then…when policing doesn’t work?”
"Most of the time, on civic issues, deities and demons tend to fall on opposite sides, so they balance each other out. It's mostly a matter of keeping that balance, and making sure the elders know what's happening with their communities." Elijah took a breath, thinking back to the paintings in the ruins that Caia had shown him. A massive war between deities and demons, the sort of thing where he'd been surprised the planet had survived. He needed to get back to her about that. "If things broke down entirely, I don't know what would happen but I don't imagine it would be pretty."
"Luckily they tend to avoid using magic at a large scale, so do witches. We would all prefer to fix things through incremental changes rather than something large that could end badly." It sounded like Howell understood what he was dealing with so Elijah decided to pull back a bit more towards the sort of issues they would actually face. "The ones who are here though, they like the world. Especially the ones on the council. Tempers can run high but in the end they want to keep things peaceful."
It was difficult not to want to believe his father when he told him he’d be around more. But should he really have needed to spell it out? Should it have taken so many months worth of spiralling for him to even notice? Shouldn’t it have been obvious that he might have needed his parents?
“Okay.” Eiji found himself replying regardless, his voice smaller than he might have liked. Everything hurt and he didn’t remember the last time he’d slept in his own bed, so maybe it wouldn’t be so bad… maybe things would get better. Eiji would have thought that people would have to listen to their coven leader, but maybe that was expecting too much of people. “Thanks…” Eiji avoided his father’s eyes again, willing any remaining tears in his gaze to dry. “Do you bring the car?”
Elijah couldn't help a relieved sigh when Eiji agreed, letting one of his hands fall while the other lingered on Eiji's shoulder still. Eiji's friend could probably look after him fine, god knows they had probably been doing it for the past while, but it would be good to have him home and safe for a night. "Thank you."
The cab that had come for Eiji had left when someone else snagged it, but there were enough around the area that it wouldn't be too hard to find another. "I teleported here." He admitted like he'd made a mistake. Funny how Eiji was the only person in the world that ever made Elijah feel guilty for using his magic. "I was worried about you and didn't want to take the time to get the car. So I can get us both home that way or we can get another cab."

Elijah came down into the lobby of the tower and couldn't help a smile when he saw Rei there. The two of them had talked about meeting to go to one of the events for vibe fest - though Elijah couldn't recognize most of the names of the groups or singers- and he'd been surprised but happy when Rei had said yes. Maybe asking him about who the new artists were would give them something to talk about that wasn't just the coven or other supernatural matters.
"Hi." It felt odd to just come to a stop a little ways from Rei and not reach out to hug him or shake his hand or something but he just had to shrug and keep going. Still, Rei looked like he was doing alright physically at least, though that was no guarantee given how much drama happened in VC. "How are you doing? I looked up the setlists for the venues, but did you have a specific one in mind?"

“Really, in what way?” Carmen asked curiously. She knew the main focus areas of each of the covens, but she had a feeling her knowledge was being largely limited to what her family wanted her to know. Anything she might have known before she was turned was foggy at best. “Are you responsible for the way the sun rings work?” She asked.
"A witch in my coven, Daphne, has worked with one of the Rosu leaders on healing potions. I think the sun rings would be more in the Dumisanis' wheelhouse since they deal with more elemental magic." Which made Elijah realize that even though he knew a few people who sold sun rings, he hadn't paid much attention to how they were made. "Have you had a chance to meet any of the clan leaders?"
Atlas had to really think about the other witch before the image of the tall handsome man popped in her head. Eiji shew knew, she knew Rei as well. They might have been much older than them both but they still hung around in the same circles, went to the same clubs. "Ah yes, that sounds exhausting," they said, frowning. It was scary to know that they had access to another thing that was meant to be protecting the supernatural community from Artemis. They were somehow always a step ahead of the community and its leaders.
There had been no evidence of betrayal from within the elves so she couldn't quite understand how hard it must be on the coven leader. "I think it's hard to see when it's close to you. You want to see the best in the people you love so you can ignore the warning signs," they said, shrugging their shoulders. "I feel like Roan was probably unexpected but I can't imagine it being Eiji's being there didn't help. Has he reached out?" Despite the rocky relationship with her own father, Atlas still spoke to him almost every day so she couldn't imagine not calling him.
"He hasn't. I've left messages for him where he can find them, digitally and physically, but he doesn't seem to be interested in replying." Elijah could use magic to track Eiji down but knew his son wouldn't be happy to be found, so he'd settled for trying to send messages for now. "I hope he and Rei are talking though." A twinge of guilt hit him as he remembered what Eiji had said about Rei having to do too much to keep their family together.
He turned to look at Atlas, leaning back a bit to rest his elbows on the steps behind him. "What do you think you would help if it was Artus who was in Eiji's position?" He knew the Westwood children had an up and down relationship with their father at times, so Atlas probably knew what his kids were thinking better than Elijah did. Atlas was also about twice as old as him even though Elijah sometimes forgot that. "Do you think there's anything I can do to make this better?"
