Centipedes --extract-- from Erdal Inci on Vimeo.
A Vast Array of Urban Street Art Aerially Photographed and Digitally Cataloged by Oddviz
Inventory
Project from Oddviz is a collection of images composed of various 3D scanned objects arranged in visually satisfying compositions:
Our ongoing series ‘Inventory’ is a cultural project where we dig the ephemeral characteristics of the public space and street furniture. Photogrammetry enables us to collect objects in detail and it is possible to create compositions using these objects as units.
We started shooting in our own neighborhood (Kadıköy, Istanbul) practicing on methodology & process of capturing objects in wide range, complexity, size and number. As we traveled for other occasions we’ve always captured in order to expand our inventory: We shot on the streets of Manhattan for a week capturing 400 unique street objects such as fire hydrants, utility poles, booths and statues. We shot 150 ancient wells-fountains in Venice and 200 facades-sidewalks in Kreuzberg-Berlin
Public space collects culture constantly as the surfaces are painted with tags, graffiti and covered with stickers. Conditions change with weather, impacts and maintenance. Interferences create uniqueness, but unlike cultural objects under protection in museums or galleries, street furniture is under constant danger of renovation or replacement. Using photogrammetry, we are documenting and protecting street culture in 3-dimensions with high-resolution texture.
During the creation of our first composition of Istanbul street objects, we let the coincidences lead the way. A random arrangement was appropriate referencing the chaotic soul of the city. During the composition of Manhattan inventory, we rather used an arrangement similar to grid based city plan with an emphasis on vertical growth of the city. Venice inventory installed around the Grand Canal and Berlin seeks the german precision.
We are working on other stills and videos as well as online-VR presentations.
You can view the 4K images for yourself here
This is @oddviz ‘s street furniture collection of Kadikoy. We have 3D captured nearly 400 unique individuals and 2 cars with around 20K photographs. Our new series “Inventory” will continue with New York, Venice and Berlin in the next months. Oddviz 'in Kadıköy sokak mobilyaları koleksiyonu. 400'e yakın birimi 20 bin fotoğrafla 3 boyutlu görüntüledik. Yeni serimiz "Envanter" New York, Venedik ve Berlin ile devam edecek.

Istanbul > Berlin > New York and (surely) beyond: Erdal Inci in Times Square
Video loop Wunderkind Erdal Inci of Istanbul, not least known to DL-ers through our first-time-in-Germany presentation of his insistently circling light-and-shadow-plays at DLX in Berlin way back in 2014, is now plastering his hypnotic (and at times unsettling) digital visions in nowhere less than Times Square, in the heart and core of the Big Apple. The work involved is called “Centipedes” and is presented in collaboration with DL kindred souls Moving Image Art Fair. But then, we always knew his work was astounding. Congrats from all of us here in Berlin, Erdal!
If you want to delve deeper into this enigmatic man’s soul, dive into our DL Deep Feature on Erdal, “Knocked For a Loop” – just click here.
Taksim Square is at Times Square! Centipedes will be exhibited as part of Midnight Moment program running every night in March from 11.57pm to 00.00 on over a dozen of electronic billboards in Times Square. The work is curated by Times Square Arts in partnership with Moving Image Art Fair, and selected by Midnight Moment Selection Committee. Special thanks to @movingimageartfair @muratkyrgyz @delememed #centipedes #taksimsquare #istanbul #timessquare #newyork #clonesproject (Times Square, Manhattan, New York)
@oddviz ’s archive of street furnitures keeps growing! This is a 3d render of hand painted bollards of Kadıköy in a random arrangement. #oddviz #photogrammetry #bollards #streetfurniture #kadikoy #istanbul

“El Orfelinato” is the second work of ongoing “Contextures” series by oddviz.

Experimental visualization from oddviz is a follow-up from their previous ‘Hotel‘, a 3D scanned reconstruction of an actual building exposed with creative cross-sections:
Orphanages are dense and harmonious living spaces housing hundreds of children under same roof simultaneously. Abandoned Jewish Orphanage Building in Ortaköy (OHR-tah-keuy) Istanbul (also known as El Orfelinato) has been a home for thousand lives during its century old history. It holds the memory of the past in worn stairs and layers of paint.
oddviz sheds light upon the visual and spatial memory of El Orfelinato, documenting it as it is with photogrammetry and presenting it in doll house view.
El Orfelinato is the second piece of ongoing “Contextures” series by oddviz.

Hotel
Video from oddviz presents creative cross-sections of a 3D scanned hotel:
Our line of vision on architectural structures is limited to either facades or interior based on where we are observing it from. This limited perspective usually lacks hints on overall complexity of the building and it usually is impossible for us to visualize the contexture as a whole.
Photogrammetry enables the buildings to be fully scanned in 3 dimensions with true scale both from inside and outside. Texture of the model being generated from photographs, overall model presents documental value.
Hotels are rich in spatial variety: Along with the residential elements such as bedrooms, living rooms, restrooms and kitchens, hotels also contain lobbies, bars, cafes, restaurants, fitness courts, spas, meeting rooms and exhibition spaces therefore it reflects visual complexity.
Oddviz documents and presents Sofa Hotel with complete interior detail in their work “Hotel”. Nearly 10,000 photos have been taken, processed and arranged according to the architectural plan. Final model is then visualized as sections of it are being removed during a video resembling medical imaging practices. This way, interior becomes observable with an optically impossible perspective.
