@erenaeoth replied to A bit about orcs
I remember when I was little and my father first read my brother and I Lord of the Rings, an eye-opening part for me was when Sam and Frodo were in Mordor. We saw that the orcs werenât just homogenous bad guys but had entire social structures to their society. There was infighting and different appearances depending on alliegence. And some were more cunning and frightening whilst others were only interested in brute force. The whole destruction of the ring was only possible because Sam and Frodo (mostly Sam), were able to do some fast orc anthropology and play sides off against each other to escape from various sticky situations.
Tokienâs never been too good on the whole if it looks ugly itâs evil thing (although I suppose one could talk about it paying homage to fairytales rather than trying to emulate real life), but I always liked the complexities he brought to the hoardes of orcs and the individuality he gave them when someone bothered to stop and look at them up close.
Oh, that moment in book was great too! My personal favorite moment of such eye-opening part was in Two Tower, where Uruk-Hai and the other orcs argued what to do about captured Hobbits. I always liked it for two reasons. One, it shows how diverse orcs were and Two, Ugluk called his enemy [Boromir] as âthe great warriorâ and frankly, I donât remember if any human or elf even bothered to call something similar anyone who wasnât their friend / ally. This moment when orc shows respect for a man that fought to death and who killed many Uruk Hai warriors always stirs many emotions in me. In some ironic ways, Ugluk showed more respected to his enemy that any man or elf showed him or his kinsmen.
Then again, Hobbit book mentioned that orcs know how to count and that some âwickedâ dwarves made alliance with goblins/orcs (due to similar interest in machinery??) and in LotR trilogy somehow people of Darkness and orcs were capable of working together too, not to mention how orcs living in Insengard called Saruman âSharkeyâ that in Black Speech means Old Man or that âOrcs will often pursue foes for many leagues into the plain, if they have a fallen captain to avenge.â info makes me really wonder how little human folks & elves really know - or bothered to know - about orcs through so many ages.
Itâs sad thing for me that orcs were the most hated race while at the same time there are those little informations that shows how orc culture(s) may be an interesting thing to study more closely. If one bother to do so.
Honestly given that the histories we have are written by Elves, Hobbits, and Men the idea that we donât really know the Orcs is a possibility. Tolkien is noted as having regretted making them entirely evil as well, though he never could really find a way to fix that without ruining other bits he did like from what I know.
Whatever the case, I do like the idea that perhaps Orcs are more than what we initially assumed them to be because weâre reading texts that are very biased against them. Itâd be a fun thing to explore fanwise and I feel in spirit with the meta-narrative.
I started to read the hobbit
Thoughts
-i fell in love with book thorin instantly
-book Bilbo is nice as well
-also dwalin he is so sweet
-they fucking carried Bilbo in the goblin caves
-why no one recognizes that Tolkien was amazing on writing comedy
-dwarves *sing a song basically explaining what's going on" Bilbo*-i can help maybe but what's going on* Thorin*-you dumb bitch we just told you*
-gandalf *-yeah your father gave me the key when I found him in the necromancer cave* thorin *-and what the fuck you were doing in the necromancer cave?* Gandalf*-none of your business*
- book thorin just don't giving a fuck and basically demanding breakfast casually
-i loved valfenda, also it says it's welcoming to any one's needs, so it's adorable to think that even the dwarves felt welcomed there
-they did however roasted everyone in the company apparently which is hilarious imagine being called a dumb bitch by some weirdos and then spending fourteen days as their guests
-no one can talk to me about fucking world building when it's Canon on Tolkien's universe that the trolls coin purse fucking talks
-again book thorin is a delight
