I may be lower man on the totem pole at work, but without that low man, the rest of the totem pole won't stand as tall.
If companies are replacing humans with AI, then why are they requiring the remaining employees to use 3+ factor authentication?
One of the sides (I don't know if it's an upside or downside) of being a forgotten middle child of the 1980s is learned helplessness. My entire life has (and continues to be) a series of "Damn it, what now?" followed by "Well, shoot, I don't have the resources to fight this, so I guess this is my life now."
It's a strange mix of depression and resilience that is heartbreaking from the outside, but after living & fighting & failing (and after removing that awful 4-letter word "hope" from my lexicon) this way forever, I am in a perpetual state of survival for no reason other than to survive. I don't think I've ever experienced comfort, let alone thriving. What the hell is that like, anyway? I think if I ever had a taste I would assume it was a fluke and wait for the expected bottom to drop out where it apparently belongs for me.
Hot take: if you're in a position above me that is in a higher tax bracket than me, you need to have basic skills in Office products like knowing how to show a PowerPoint presentation or share your screen in a Teams meeting.

I don't drink coffee, so most days I am powered by sheer stubborn will and spite.
There is something that always baffled me about law enforcement agencies: why would you ever need quotas? You would think that if they're doing their job, then crime would drop or taper off or level out and there would be lower numbers, which would be a good thing. Creating quotas for arrests or tickets or whatever only encourages offices to stretch definitions or flat-out fabricate stuff to inflate the numbers.
While I'm thinking about it, there shouldn't be quotas at medical facilities either. Any profession meant to fix or prevent bad stuff from happening should never have to worry about meeting numbers goals, except maybe time to fix the problem, but certainly not how many problems are fixed.
My budget has become so tight that my grocery list has become a wish list.
Likely unpopular hot take: ma'am is not an ageist insult to convey that the person thinks you're a matronly old woman. If someone from the south calls you ma'am, it is an acknowledgement that you deserve respect and there is no age attached to the honoriffic.
Conversely, "miss" is slightly derogatory, especially if they make no attempt to add a name after it. It tends to indicate that you are an inexperienced individual who probably deserves an eyeroll for what you did or said, or are about to do or say.

Look, if you want me to take the lead in a project, then you have 2 options.
1) Trust me to have full control to do it my way. I accept feedback, but I'm running the show now.
2) Give me explicit directions, instructions, guidelines to ensure your vision is produced your way with my labor.
That's it. I don't function under micromanagement or constantly being undermined along the way. I direct my team once you give me a team. Otherwise, you are going to have to take back the reins. Frustration, countermeasures, decisions made without consulting the team lead, all of these things will guarantee failure or severely hinder the work process.
I've concluded that people are not illiterate in that they are perfectly capable of reading the words placed before them. The issue appears to stem from a self-centered stubborn willfulness to extract only what they deem is most beneficial or highlighted for themselves. The rest of the message is clearly superficial clap-trap that OBVIOUSLY doesn't apply to them because they don't want it to. It's like those "extra" words are the straw you put in the basket to fluff up the words they want to find.
Dear Amazon:
I bought 1 footstool for my one desk in my one office at work. I completed the purchase. I'm keeping the product. I don't need you to show me another 50 footstools. I'm not going to buy or need another one any time soon.
Sincerely,
Anyone who has ever made a singular purchase and is neither restocking a civilization nor going into the 3rd party resale market

Does anyone else find it painful to pay for a membership (especially a discount or rewards one) only to find that you don't have any money left to use that membership? For example, you pay the subscription fee for Amazon Prime, but since you paid for it, you now don't have any money to order anything. I'm sure there are others. I'm not going to admit how many I have right now. It hurts, though. 😜

This morning managed to produce some of the most Monday of Monday moments in the first 3 hours of my day, before I even made it to the office.
A few weeks ago I thought, "Oh, I should maybe read [type of book] this summer." This is what I did for years when I was younger--picked a genre to try to read during the summer. Then I realized I haven't been tied to the world of academia since my daughter graduated in 2020. I am not beholden to this concept of "summer reading" any more. I have a TBR stack that I am happy to be working through and I don't really want to interject anything to interrupt my progress on the pile. I can read what I want when I want without any outside interference. I'm not going to change my reading pace simply because it's hotter, there's a little more daylight, and random kids are running around screaming everywhere at all hours with their brief moments of freedom. I am a free autonomous adult who is no longer burdened by a school-year calendar. My days don't vary for class breaks or holidays or homecoming or any other type of school-type events. My reading (nor my crafting, for that matter) doesn't have to take any cues from anything outside my own motivation. So, I don't need any "summer reading warrior lists" or "summer reading journals" or anything else like that. Since I'm not getting any external reward for how many books I race through in 2 months, nor do I need external motivation to read, I will continue on as I have for quite some time in my adult life.
Enjoy your words, everyone. If the idea of "summer reading" inspires you, then go for it. If it makes what you had going feel like a burden or chore or homework assignment that sucks some of the joy out of reading, then consider skipping it. You are your own person. No one has the right to dictate how you enjoy your leisure activities (they are welcome to make suggestions if you ask, but they cannot command).
