Overnight, some brave soul installed this guerrilla art piece in Chinatown. It is without question the only instance of public art with substance the neighborhood has seen in the past few decades. It may very well be the most important Chicago-based work of our time. The artist's identity is unknown, though it's clear they possess unrivaled technical ability that has yet to been matched in the contemporary art world. This sculpture is evocative of Duchamp, though it has the feverish anger reminiscent of when Christ drove the money changers from the temple. In a world of NFTs and fast food art, this artist has unapologetically spat in the face of contemporary creatives. Never has so much been said in so little. The depth of this piece is truly understood when you consider its transient, evolving nature. This work will give each viewer a unique experience as the fruit slowly rots over time. The pests that will swarm this piece will add a performative element. Each soul that pours themself into this will have an unsharable view that no one else will have tasted. I tremble at the loneliness I already feel from my unsharable mental snapshot. But that's what grants a magnum opus it's status, no? Every masterpiece requires an element of cruelty. I didn't need to type all this for you to understand the inherent value this art gifts to humanity - its majesty is objective and obvious to everyone. However I fear the imminent day when this art is ripped from its foundations and dragged it to Sotheby's, whereupon it'll inevitably become hidden in the foyer of a Russian oligarch's summer home like so many Banksy's before it. Who are any of us to rob the people of art? To become so enamored with a rose that this coveting turns to destruction when we attempt to pluck it from the earth to steal that beauty for ourselves, only to inevitably snuff out that light? Maybe this is the mystery artist's true statement. They bestowed this gift to the common man, knowing that the bourgeois would pilfer this away from ys. Collective, public grief will be immeasurable and inevitably convert to rage against the bourgeois and a mass uprising. We can only wait in uneasy admiration.
