This 28-year-old man has volunteered to be kept unconscious for a research study on heart dysrhythmia. In a few minutes, the doctors will administer a jolt that will send the specimen’s heart into a frenzy. There’s a roughly 1 in 20 chance that he’ll undergo a full cardiac arrest. If he does, his odds of him being revived are less than 50/50. That possibility is anticipated in his consent agreement, so the storage tube that his nude corpse would be preserved and displayed in, for all eternity, is standing by in the lab down the hall.
