Lighthouse

Welcome to the lighthouse! This page was created by a group of young women who have gathered to fight against human trafficking among the black women community. We call ourselves the Lighthouse because we want to be a guiding light for women that may have had the unfortunate experience of being sex trafficked. We also want to be a strong foundation for those that want to dive into the dangerous waters of trafficking prevention.

The purpose of this page is to bring awareness to the unyielding issue of Human trafficking in hopes that others will take action in preventing sex trafficking; starting with African American women. Year after year the rate at which African American women are more likely to be trafficked rises. We will be sharing information such as safety hotlines, prevention events, art, and more!  Our goal is to get those numbers to disintegrate with every post of awareness and prevention.

What can you do?

Many people are unaware that one of the most dangerous times is during major sporting events. The Super Bowl has been labeled one of the largest Human Trafficking event worldwide. There are many reasons for this one of them being that there’s so many people who are focused on this event and not about their safety. It’s easier to transport people when there are so many people traveling. People are less likely to be reported missing until days later due to this event. The Super Bowl has always been a busy time and takes many peoples focus.

Throughout researching this topic, it shows that Black women and girls are way more likely to get caught in sex trafficking. However, it’s important to note that a lot of information being spread about sex trafficking and human trafficking surrounds white women and girls. 

Like many other human rights issues, it’s seen that Black women are pushed to the back burner. It’s so important for concepts like intersectionality to be included in movements like ending sex trafficking. It’s confusing to see that Black women are the main victims of this issue, yet not many people address it. 

This is Casandra Diamond. She was introduced to sex trafficking at a very young age and it took nearly nine years for her to get out of it. Her story was very eye opening due to the fact that when she began in cycle of sex trafficking, she believed that everything she was doing was because she wanted to. Casandra fought so hard to have autonomy over her body and ended up losing all sense of it. 

While she isn’t a Black woman, her story can resonate with so many women. It’s very common for people in her same position - low income housing, lack of parental support, etc. - to get wrapped up in the ongoing cycle of sex trafficking.
