The Pax Silica initaitive is a joint plan involving the participants such as the UK, US, Israel, the EU to secure rare earth minerals for the silicon supply chain. This plan will involve opening up huge swaths of the island of Luzon to mining and special economic zones, displacing farming communities and threatening the food and water security of thousands.

To be clear, this is NOT a data center, this is rare earth metal extraction and manufacturing, particularly silicon. I'd actually argue that's worse because a single data center can cause a lot of harm but it can be shut down. Meanwhile, rare earth extraction could cause lasting damage including pollution of water, air and land, and habitat destruction.

(7/30/26) The Red Cross just declared the second US blood crisis in its history.

Summer sees both a drop off in donations and, at least for our trauma center, a spike in traumas. Trauma centers across the US are in danger of running out of blood for our trauma patients TODAY, which is very scary but, unlike much of the other scary national news coming across our screens these days, is something you can help fix immediately and directly.

We need ASAP donations of blood, for people to spread the word, and for manager types to help facilitate others' donations. All blood types are needed, but universal donor blood (type O) is especially dire.

in the scene when Thorin rushes in to save Bilbo from Smaug and they run into each other, Bilbo currently has the Arkenstone, which is canonically considered Thorin’s “heart,” right?

when Thorin asks him if he has it, Bilbo reads the room real quick and says no to keep it safe — if Thorin had been of sound mind and gotten them both to safety immediately, he would be saving both Bilbo and himself

but he isn’t of sound mind and isn’t himself, so when he pushes Bilbo away with the long sword, he’s also pushing away his own heart

He’s Te Kā-ing himself

Bilbo holding the Arkenstone in the same place where he’s keeping the One Ring, too (and how we fully expect him to be holding the ring but he’s holding the Arkenstone in that one scene) can be a good metaphor for Thorin’s heart being corrupted by gold

(you could also argue that the acorn — symbolizing new beginnings but also symbolizing both Bilbo (hobbits as small and unassuming) and Thorin (literally Oaken Shield) — is a symbol of their relationship coming out of the corruption, which is why Thorin comes out of the dragon sickness when he sees it and why he says it’s a poor prize to take back to the Shire bc Thorin sees himself as a poor prize (based on how he reacts to Dwalin in the throne room when he says how dare you speak to me as if I were still Thorin Oakenshield) but Bilbo says one day it’ll grow — and it does grow even after Thorin dies bc love prevails over corruption (like the flowers growing on the king statue’s head))
